Tornado vs. Spencer,
| You may have heard about a tornado in mid-1998 that virtually wiped out a small town in South Dakota. That was Spencer, a two hours' drive from here. The funnel was almost as wide as the town. Click here to access an excellent report on the Spencer twister. |
Watch for Falling Houses | In 1938, an MGM film crew recorded a twister carrying away a farmhouse! See the unbelievable pictures (and read the revealing report) here. :) |
The Tornado |
A funnel a mile wide, travelling an average 60 mph, for 219 miles across three states.
Grinding everything in its path to pieces for 3½ hours.
A debris cloud so large, some witnesses didn't even recognize it as a tornado.
689 people dead or missing, 2,000 wounded, 15,000 homes destroyed.
Four towns...gone. That was the legendary "tri-state tornado" of 1925, possibly the strongest known twister in non-Biblical written history. Click here, here, and here to read the incredible tale.

Tornadoes on Parade |
Tornadoes can be eerily beautiful things. The debris they pick up give twisters unique colors and
textures, and the inherent randomness of their creation give them various shapes--sometimes
a classic, straight funnel, sometimes an almost horizontal rope, sometimes cylindrical or tubular. Click
here to see a collection of my favorite tornado images found on the Web.

Tornado Safety | Remember hearing you should open your home's windows when a tornado's coming, so the house won't explode? Like a lot of really cool ideas, this one's a myth. Learn this and more on this Tornado Safety page. |
