Ganon's Last Breath

By: John Kary

It all started out on an early, brisk morning in Hyrule. The clouds floating softly across the crystal blue sky of Hyrule Field. With the wind blowing softly through his house, Link awoke from his deep sleep. “Nice day isn’t it, Navi?” Link yawning said to his fairy Navi.

“Is it ever,” replied Navi softly. “One of the nicest days we’ve had in a long time.”

“About the best day we’ve seen since about 8 years ago before Ganondorf reeked havoc on all Hyrule,” said Link enduring.

“Since today is such a nice day, the Deku Sprout will be extra generous to all that speak with him,” explained Navi to the young warrior.

“Ok... let’s go ask him if he’s feeling the same strangeness we’re both feeling this morning...” said Link curiously.

Navi and Link set off from Link’s small house in Kokiri Forest to the clearing in the forest where the new guardian of the forest dwelled, the Deku Sprout. Ever since the Great Deku Tree died from Ganondorf’s curse that he put on the Great Deku Tree during his quest to obtain all 3 Spiritual Stones, Kokiri Forest just hasn’t been the same. But since Link broke the curse, the Deku Sprout was able to sprout and flourish.

After a nice, soothing walk through the forest village, Link and Navi came upon the clearing where the Deku Sprout was.

“Oh my god!” yelled Link as he saw what had happened during the night. “The Deku Sprout... it... it... it’s been burned to the ground!!”

Then came a voice they both knew oh so well... “Oh my dear friends, Navi and Link. How nice it is to see you both again!”

“...Ganondorf...” Link murmured to himself. “He’s back...”

“Yes, for I am. Back from that evil place you banished me to those 8 short years ago. And now, I’m back and stronger than ever. With the Triforce of Power still in my possession, I have trained myself to use it’s great power,” Ganon said to the two adventurers. “You shall soon pay for your doings... but not at the foot of me... at the foot of these Hobgoblins!” Just then, Ganon roared loudly, shaking the ground. Using the Triforce of Power, he summoned seven Hobgoblins to fight the 25 year old warrior and his trust companion.

The Hobgoblin the farthest form him, looking as to be the leader of the group spoke to Link. “For we are a party of seven, we will not end you to heaven... but into the ground we will, for we were made to kill!”

Link appearing baffled by the creativeness of the rhyme was then rushed by two Hobgoblins, one from each side. He quickly snapped out of it and started charging up his sword and when the two drew near, he released the power in his sword creating a wave of energy that sent the two Hobgoblins flying into the bushes.

Then Link quickly pulled out his Fairy Bow and notched three arrows onto the string. He lift them all a blaze and reared back the string and turned his bow sideways with the arrows resting on top of the bow. He let the arrows fly in the direction of the group of Hobgoblins. He nailed three of the remaining six right in the chest, burning them to the ground. It’s no wonder he hit with all three arrows for he is the archery champion of Gerudo Fortress with a perfect score of 2000 pts., which is 20 bull’s-eyes while riding on horseback.

The remaining three Hobgoblins charged Link with great aggression. “Kkkyyyeaaa!” they yelled. With quick reflexes he lit a bomb and threw it at the three charging monsters. Since Hobgoblins have very poor eyesight, they didn’t see Link light and throw the bomb. Right as they stepped over the bomb, it exploded sending the “Marvelous Three”, which is what the last three called themselves, into the tree killing them instantly.

“Well done Link, I see you have improved your skills since we have last met. I have yet again taken the Princess Zelda hostage. To return her and peace to Hyrule, you will have to come and try your might against me for one final battle to the death. You won’t know when or even where I will decide to encounter you, but when we finally duel for the last time, you will surely lose to the all mighty Ganondorf!!” And with that, Ganon’s voice echoed through the forest.

“Navi...?”

“...Yes Link?”

“We’ve got to prepare for the final duel with Ganon. He has two of the three pieces he needs to gain full control of Hyrule... the Triforce of Power, which he holds, and the Triforce of Wisdom that Zelda holds. And now he’s waiting for me to come so he can have the third and final piece, the Triforce of Courage which I hold.”

“Yea, ever since Ganon laid his hands on the Triforce that was bestowed in the Temple of Light by Rauru, it split up into the three main pieces: the Triforce of Power, Triforce of Wisdom, and Triforce of Courage. With all three pieces in his hands, Ganon could reek havoc on Hyrule for an entire eternity!” added Navi with her infinite wisdom about the legend.

So the warrior and his trusty fairy set out on their final quest. They left the forest village of Kokiri and set out for the Market where the Temple of Time is. To do so, they had to cross Hyrule Field. When they got into the field, Link pulled his ocarina out of his pouch. “Jeez... I haven’t used this thing for years. Let’s see if I still remember my horse Epona’s song. Hopefully she is still around somewhere, or else we’ll have a long journey ahead of us to cross Hyrule Field.”

With that, Link put the ocarina to his lips and played: F, E, D, F, E, D. Just then Epona came galloping towards Link and Navi. Link, overjoyed, ran towards Epona. When they got near, Epona reared back and neighed with joy. Link could tell she was happy to see him. He stuck his foot in the foot hold on his worn saddle and mounted the horse. “You ready to ride old girl?!” Link stroked Epona’s neck as to comfort her. “Heeyah!” He slapped the horse’s leg to get her to start going. They galloped at a steady pace towards the Market.

About two-thirds of the way there, Navi suggested something. “Hey Link, I’ve got an idea! Let’s stop in on our old friends Malon and Talon at Lon Lon Ranch!”

“Hey! Good idea!” Link pulled on the reigns to stop Epona. He turned to go East. “Ok, let’s go girl!” He slapped Epona to get her going.

They arrived at Lon Lon Ranch just as the sun was setting. It was just before 18:00. Link rode into Lon Lon Ranch and brought Epona around to the Stable and tied her up inside with the four other cows in there. He walked around to the door of the big house that Malon and Talon lived in. He knocked an waited for an answer. After about fifteen seconds, a beautiful girl opened the door. “Malon?!”

“Link?!?! Oh my goodness, hi! I haven’t talked to you to you in years!”

“Really... you look great,” he smiled at her.

“Thanks, so do you in your usual green tunic and fighting gear. But why do you have it on? I thought you and the Princess banished that Ganon guy to the gap between dimensions?” Malon asked.

“We did, but he some how found a way out and is back to make the life of everyone in Hyrule miserable again,” Link said with worry.

“Well... oh! Come in, come in, I’m sorry. You must be hungry. Father and I were just about to eat dinner. Would you care to join us?”

“Yea, I could go for some food about now. I’m starving.”

“Hey! It’s that forest boy! Haven’t seen you around since you woke me in Kakariko Village with that cucco,” said Malon’s father Talon.

“Talon, hi. Yea, I’m back out on another adventure chasing Ganon again,” said Link. “But this time, I’m going to finish the job and send him to a place he won’t be coming back from.”

“Well it’s about time one of you hero characters gets rid of that guy. He’s been menacing around for quite some time,” said Talon.

“And that’s just what I plan on doing.”

Then with that, they started their dinner of baked Cucco and famous Lon Lon Milk to drink.

After they were done eating, Link was about to leave when Malon came from behind him. “Why don’t you stay here tonight. Besides, where else would you sleep?”

“Ok... since you don’t live far from the Market, Navi and I’ll camp out here tonight,” Link said.

“The extra room is upstairs. The bed is all made and ready for a visitor. Go ahead and make yourself at home up there. G’night Link!” said Malon departing.

“’Night,” said Link. After closing the door, he plopped down on the bed and was asleep in minutes.

“Link...?” Malon said opening the door to Link’s room. It was morning and Link was nowhere to be found. He had left early in the morning to get to the Market when the drawbridge was let down so he could get into the Temple of Time and talk to Rauru as soon as possible.

Getting into the Market around 06:00, Link went to the Temple of Time. He entered it to see the three Spiritual Stones still sitting in the alter from 8 years ago. He went up to the now sealed Door of Time and took out his ocarina. He put it to his mouth: C, A, B, C, A, B. He played the Song of Time which was what he needed to enter the room where the Pedestal of Time which held the Master Sword was. The solid stone door lifted, just as the first time he had done this.

“Jeez... this place brings back a lot of memories...” said Navi to Link.

“Sure does,” Link replied. “Well, here goes nothing,” Link said as he stepped up to the Master Sword. He put his hands on it and pulled it out with a sudden jerk. A blue ray then engulfed him and the pedestal. He was transported to the Sacred Realm where Six of the Seven Sages were. “Rauru... hi it’s me, Link.”

“Yes, I know it’s you. I saw what happened to the Deku Sprout and what Ganon said. You know what you have to do,” said Rauru.

“Well, pretty much. I have to get the Princess Zelda back to safety from Ganondorf, ya-da, ya-da, ya-da, the traditional hero role. And I’ve got to banish Ganon from Hyrule forever and save the land. But banishing Ganon... I exactly don’t know how to do,” said Link.

“I am going to teach you the song you will need to summon us, the Six Sages. That will then release Zelda, the Seventh Sage from whatever crystal she is being held prisoner in by Ganon. We will then hold Ganon renderlous while you deliver the final blow. But you will have to talk to the Fairy by the Castle to learn that sword trick,” Rauru told Link. “Here is the song, the ‘Flutet of Sages’.” Rauru put his ocarina to his mouth and played: F, C, B, D, E, F.

Link repeated his song: F, C, B, D, E, F. “Great. Now go to the Fairy by the Castle and learn the new sword technique you need to defeat the all mighty Ganondorf!!”

Rauru lifted his hands and the blue ray came again and engulfed Link. The next thing he noticed was that he was back in the Temple of Time on the Pedestal of Time. “Ok, he said the Fairy by the Castle?” Link asked Navi.

“Yes, the Fairy by the Castle. The one that allowed you to only take half damage 8 years ago...? Remember...?” Navi reminded Link of his previous journey.

“Oh yea, I remember her. Well then, I guess we’re off to see the Fairy by the Castle.” Link and Navi left the Temple of Time, going into the Market. “I think I’d better buy some fairies from the shop, don’t you?”

“That would be a good idea since we don’t know what we’re going to up against,” Navi said. Link and Navi entered the shop.

“Howdy sir. How may I help you?” asked the shop owner.

“I need four fairies please,” Link said to the man.

“I assume you have bottles for all of these?”

“Yes I do... Here,” Link said handing the shop owner four empty bottles. The owner put one fairy in each jar.

“That’ll be two-hundred rupees please, sir,” the shop owner said. Link handed the man a giant golden rupee, worth two-hundred rupees. “Thank you sir, would you like anything else?”

“No, that’ll be all, thank you.” Link and Navi left the shop, heading for the castle Ganon was in. Arriving at the Castle, they saw the massive size of it and were astound at its size. “Over there is the Fairy’s Fountain. Let’s get over there and get this over with.” The two entered through the hold in the wall of the hillside.

Upon entering the Fairy’s Fountain, they noticed the radiant walls, flowing with colored water in droplets down the walls. Link stepped up onto the fountain where the Triforce symbol was embedded on the ground. He played Zelda’s Lullaby on his ocarina to summon the fairy. Laughing, the fairy came up out of the middle of the fountain. “Oh, for it is the ‘One Chosen By Destiny’! Have you come to learn your new sword technique?” said the fairy to Link.

“Yes... please teach me,” said Link.

“This technique was used for generations by master swordsmen. Receive it now!” The fairy outstretched her arms towards Link. A circle of spinning silver sparkles engulfed him. “You now have learned the Thrust of Light. To use this trick you, you must charge up your sword for fifteen seconds. Then release the energy stored in the sword to summon the Dark Lord’s soul out of his body and into the sword. His soul will be stored the sword for eternity,” explained the fairy to Link.

“Well, thank you Great Fairy. Good-bye,” said Link.

“Ooohh... this place gives me the creeps,” Navi said upon entering Ganon’s Castle with Link. “I hope we can find Ganon and get out of here.”

“...Link... Navi, I see you have found your way to my castle,” Ganon’s voice echoed through the hollow space. “I had this castle made, with millions of traps, but forget that. I’ll just finish you off now myself!!” Ganon burst up through the floor, knocking Link backwards onto the floor.

“Oh... my... god... he’s huge!!” yelled Navi.

“Link... you’re gonna diiiieeeee...” said Ganon with hatred in his voice.

“I don’t think so... paaaaaalllll,” said Link back to the monstrous beast.

Ganon roared with rage. Link saw Princess Zelda embedded in a crystal, she couldn’t escape. “Link! Finish off Ganon!” she yelled from inside her capsule. Link ran towards Ganon as fast as he could. Ganon, with his two giant sais, swiped at Link. But just before the sais hit Link, he ducked into a roll and rolled under Ganon’s legs. He then drew his Biggoron Sword and drove it through the fat part of Ganon’s tail. Ganon roared with grave pain.

Ganon reached around and pulled Link’s sword from his tail. His tail gushed with blood. “You still think you can strike me down with these pitifully made weapons?! Ha! You will never defeat me!” Ganon said braking Link’s sword in half link a toothpick in between his fingers. He threw it aside.

“That sword may not have been of any worry to you, but this one will be!!” Link charged at Ganon with his sword outstretched.

“Ha!” Ganon blurted dodging Link’s attack and swiping him to the ground with his hand, knocking Link down and hurting his arm. “Like I said, you are no match for the all mighty Ganondorf.” Ganon walked over to Link, who lay motionless on the ground. He picked up Link’s legendary Master Sword that lay on the ground next to him. He tossed it aside. Ganon then picked up Link by his tunic and held him fifteen feet in the air. Ganon’s raunchy breath brought Link to. “Does the poor little forest boy not have a weapon?” Ganon said in an antagonizing voice. “What shall the poor boy do without his legendary sword, huh?” Link jerked and tried to get away from Ganon’s grasp. “You weak, pathetic fool......AAAAHHHHHH!!!” Ganon screamed in pain from the blow to his already bloody tail. He dropped Link to the ground.

It was a mysterious man in a white tunic, almost identical to Link’s. A bright light radiated from the man. “Link, your ocarina, catch.” said the man throwing Link his Fairy Ocarina. The man in the white tunic ran at Ganon with a giant, bright sword which radiated a white light also.

Ganon knocked the man to the floor, injuring him badly. But with some of his last strength, he swiped at Ganon’s face with his sword sending Ganon into a fury. The man yelled at Link, “It is time! Play the song to summon Rauru and the other sages!!”

Link put his mouth to the ocarina and played the “Flutet of Sages”: F, C, B, D, E, F. Zelda then dropped to the ground. Rauru and the five other Sages appeared as well. Link ran to his Master Sword and picked it up and began to charge it. “Seven Sages of Hyrule, nooowww!!!”

All Seven Sages lifted their hands towards the sky. The color of the medallions they held their power in appeared in a beam of light coming together in a swirl above Ganon: gold, green, red, blue, orange, purple, and pink. It al came together and descended upon Ganon. It held him renderlous. “Link... do it now!!” yelled Rauru. Link ran up to Ganon and released the power in his sword. It shook the whole castle as Link let forth the power of the Master Sword and thrusted it straight through Ganon’s head. Link started to feel the power of his sword flow through his whole body as Ganon’s soul was withdrawn from his body.

“I hate all of you!!!!” Ganon screamed as his soul left his body and entered the sword. It was so powerful, it knocked Link backwards and onto the ground, making the Master Sword fly from Link’s hands.

When all of the light was clear and everything was done, the Seven Sages, Link, Navi, and the man in the white tunic, all stared in awe at the sword. Link walked up to it and picked it up. “We did it. He’s gone, forever...” said Link. Zelda ran to Link’s side to comfort him after his battle. Link then walked over to the man in the white tunic and he looked down on him. “Who are you...?” Link asked.

“I know exactly who you are... but you don’t know who I am...” said the man.

“But who exactly are you?” said Link.

“I... I am the Hero of Light,” said the man.

“The Hero of Light?!” Navi said in astonishment. “I’ve never heard of there ever being a Hero of Light.”

“Yes, the Hero of Light. I was alive during the first great battle of Hyrule. I had a wife... and a son...... Link...?” the Hero of Light said with his dying breath.

“Yes?”

“I... am... your father...” Then Link’s father passed away.

“...My... my father...? Dad...?” Link said shaking his father. “Dad...?! Dad!!!!”

“Link,” Zelda said to Link, “he’s gone.”

“Nooooooooo!!” screamed Link at the top of his lungs. He lay over his father crying.

After a while, Link got up, “We have to finish the job. We have to seal Ganon away forever. Rauru, how shall do we seal away Ganon?”

“First, we need the Triforce of Power.”

“Ganon had it. I’ll search his dead body,” said Link. Link searched Ganon’s body for the third piece. He came across a pouch. He yanked it off of Ganon’s belt and opened it. The Triforce of Power shined bright inside the pouch.

“Link, you and Zelda each have one of the three pieces embedded in your soul. Come with me to the gate of the Sacred Realm and we can extract the pieces from your soul so I can restore the Triforce,” said Rauru.

“Ok,” Link and Zelda said at the same time. As they started to walk out, Link remembered, “Wait, we need to get my father.” Link ran over to his father’s body and picked it up. “Okay... we can go now. We can bury him by the Temple of Time.”

So Link, Rauru, Zelda, and Navi all left Ganon’s castle. “Okay,” said Rauru. “We need to bury Ganon’s body along with his castle. I will do it.” Rauru raised his hands to the sky. A huge beam of yellow light engulfed Ganon’s castle. The ground shook violently as the castle slowly crumbled down and sank into the lava pit below.

“Now, we bury my father,” said Link. The group left the area where Ganon’s castle was. They came upon the Temple of Time and went to its right side. Link dug a deep hole to bury his father in. He laid his father’s body in it but before doing so, he removed his father’s white tunic. He and Rauru put dirt over Link’s father’s body. Link laid his Hylian Shield over his father’s grave, almost as a gravestone.

“Now we need to seal Ganon’s soul away by putting the Master Sword, with Ganon’s soul enclosed inside of it, into the Pedestal of Time,” said Rauru. The four entered the Temple of Time and came upon the Pedestal of Time. “Link... will you do the honors?” Rauru said to Link. Link nodded and stepped up to the pedestal. He removed the sword from the sheath on his back and thrusted the Master Sword into the pedestal. A huge beam of blue light came from all sides of the group. It passed over them all and centered on the Master Sword until it was a thin beam, and then disappeared.

“And now, the final step. Reinstating the Triforce,” Rauru said. “I will transport us to the gate of the Sacred Realm. Step onto the pedestal Zelda, and join Link.” Rauru stepped onto the pedestal along with Link and Zelda. He lifted his arms to the sky and the group was engulfed in a bright light.

The next thing they noticed was a beautiful room. Rauru said, “Link, step onto the plat form with the Triforce symbol on it. This will extract the Triforce of Courage from your soul. Stand in the center of the symbol in between all three pieces.” Link stepped onto the center of the platform. The Triforce symbol began to glow and it engulfed Link in a beam of light. When the light ceased, the Triforce of Courage was hovering between Rauru’s hands. He then grabbed it and put it in his pocket along with the Triforce of Power that Link had given him. “Zelda, your turn,” Rauru said. Zelda did the same as Link and the Triforce of Wisdom was extracted from Zelda’s soul.

“Now with all three pieces of the Triforce, I will restore the entire Triforce. I bid you both farewell. Your job is done Link, you are truly the Hero of Time!!” With that, Rauru vanished to reinstate the Triforce.

“Well, I guess this is good-bye,” said Zelda to Link. A blue portal appeared from the ground.

“Yea, I guess so,” Link said. “Here.” Link took off his green tunic and put on his father’s white tunic. He gave the green tunic to Zelda. “Keep this, as a reminder of me.”

“Okay... good-bye... Link.”

“Good-bye.” Zelda stepped into the portal and she was engulfed in a blue crystal and floated into the darkness above.

Link then did the same. Hyrule was safe from evil, Ganon was nevermore, and the Triforce reinstated. Everything in Hyrule was right.

The End
