The time is out of joint; O cursed spite,
That ever I was born to set it right!
--Shakespeare, Hamlet (Act I, Scene V)
He has always been known (at least in his mind) as a friendly and fun-loving guy. He tried to downplay the political tensions in Amber by throwing beach parties, bringing in wind-surfing. That ended after he'd been back about two days--when Caine stabbed him.
After the slaughter of Queen Vialle (his sponsor), Iris and Alexander by Caliban, a darkness has settled into his blue eyes. The smile is gone from his face. He could not get revenge for his father's death. He could not avenge his wife's death. He will get revenge for the innocents' deaths!
"There is no such thing as a perfect death. No matter how it happens, whether in your sleep or heroically in the heat of battle (as my father), someone is always in great pain at the loss." --Torrence
When Torrence first arrived in Amber, there was no question that he was of the Blood; the big debate was "is he Corwin's kid, or Eric's?" He's built like both of them--a construction work's frame--with hair so black it's almost blue. He was wearing what would become typical for him: a green mock-turtleneck shirt and black pants. Not much help there. Now, with his beard and mustache, the resemblance to Eric is uncanny.
Green and black
Manta Ray
Rebma
Castle Amber
Tovignea -- Golden Circle shadow where the Weir (Eric's personal army, now loyal to Torrence) have made residence.
Reath -- An island world where Torrence lived for eight years. After his wife Clarissa passed away, Torrence returned to Amber.
Mikado -- Torrence's sword. A katana given to him by his father as he was about to walk the pattern for the first time.
The Weir -- Eric's personal army, now loyal to Torrence. Resembling werewolves, these creatures are renowned for being difficult to fight, let alone kill. They are lead by Jehrico.
Signet ring -- The King's seal; Eric made sure that if he died, it would be delivered to Torrence.
MOIRE, his mother -- former Queen of Rebma
"Oh Moire. Mother. If you would have planned longer; if you would have planned better; if you would have included me from the beginning, I may very will have succeeded you in Rebma. But you kept me in the dark till it was too late. If it weren't for the kindness of Queen Vialle, your blunder could have cost me my life."
ERIC, his father -- son of Oberon and Rilga
"I wish, Father, you hadn't hidden me away for my own protection. I may have died young, but I would have had a family. I would have had you."
CLARISSA, his deceased wife
"I still dream about you babe. I'm sorry we didn't have children . . . ."
"Just one year of love, is better than a lifetime alone . . ." --Queen
CORDELIA, his foster mother
"She raised me as her own--at father's and Moire's request--and is, perhaps, the closest thing to family I have. She has certainly cared for me better than my birth mother."
STEPHEN, his foster brother
"Raised as brothers, we grew up as friends. He was always jealous of me; even more so when the truth of my parentage became known. I will do what I can for him and his mother."
JAYSEN, his half-brother -- son of Eric and Lenore
"I'd just gotten use to having a new mother--and now I find that father had another son. I empathize with him in some ways--we were both shunted off, out of the way--but we have different backgrounds. He seems nice enough, though perhaps too much like Chadwick."
LORIAN, his half-sister -- daughter of Corwin and Moire
"First a new mother. Then a new brother. Now a sister. What else is there? She seems awfully eager to change the world; I've yet to decide if she's naive or not."
"Friendly and ineffectual, I appreciate his occasional ambition. He continues to find himself wherever I happen to be, and I suppose this to be flattering, but I can't but wonder at his lack of occupation or imagination." --Ariel (Dec. 1, 1996)
"I know little of this man, which is a shame, for one would think that the son of a King of Amber would make his presence felt." --Arthur (May 1, 1997)
"The bloody middle of a formal reception, and this goof walks in wearing a turtle neck and a cape. I'm not saying that looking like my cousin's 7th grade, D&D playing, trekkie, geek boyfriend (sans acne) is a bad thing, it is just very representative of the problem with Torrence. To both his credit and his detriment, he is the most real of all my cousins. Relatively simple in soul he is ruled by caprice and whimsy alone. He lacks the responsibility both his birthright and the power behind it demand of the privileged. Although he can be fun, he is unfit for any power, which unfortunately he possesses. Torrence is reasonable competence, incorrigibly untempered by reason itself.....did I mention he looks like he dresses in the dark?" --Chadwick (Dec. 14, 1996)
"Through Fate we are brothers. Through Destiny we are the sons of a Great King. Despite a messy past, made more messy by the passage of time, we must find a way to work together to realize our father's dream." -- Jaysen (January 1998)
"At one time, I held him in some esteem. Now however I hold him only in contempt. With some potential I should have credited him with something other than a rather extensive catalogue of failures." --Karl (Dec. 1, 1996)
"I once thought you clever for being so unlike the other Amberites, and now it occurs to me that you are no different, that with all of reality at your disposal you still remain there...in Amber...bickering and manipulating along with the rest. 'You can take the boy out of the farm....'" --Konrad (January 1998)
"My brother, what could you have been thinking? To leave before acknowledging Arthur in some fashion...even Caine was not so foolish." --Lorian (March 1, 1998)
"Well, now I've finally met him, but I'm still not sure what to make of him. Despite what Mom says about his relaxed attitude, I don't think he's nearly as uninterested in power as he pretends." -- Lorian (December, 1997)
"Some have written you off as the fool, but I think that you are playing the same game that I am. Stay in the shadows, just outside the light...enough to be seen, were someone to look.... but not enough to be noticed by the casual observer. Watch as the wheels spin and the gears grind, waiting for the perfect moment. But for what?" --Talia Bacquillinor (Dec. 22, 1997)
