WORLD WAR I By John Petroski Based on the WW1 scenario that came with Civ2 Conflicts in civ. cd. Requires Fantastic Worlds add on December 1998 INTRODUCTION *********************************************************************** This is my second published scenario. I wanted to remake the "original" World War 1 scenario because I found it laking. I was dissapointed when I found that it had no new terrain, and not even a new unit for the Red Baron. I hope that my efforts will make this scenario a better one in the end, please send me your thoughts and questions at JPski7@aol.com THE COUNTRIES *********************************************************************** Central Powers The protagonist of this scenario, it is your job as playing as them to take over the world. Your offensive power is awesome on land, but relativly weak in the sea. You start off the scenario allready at war with France, Britain, and Russia. This means that you will be forced to fight a two front war right from the start. Take into account that the British may very well bombard your coastline regularly and you could be in for a bit of trouble. You do however have your advantages. The Red Baron is the best aircraft unit in the game and should have no trouble dispatching of British or French fighters. HIGHLY RECOMEMDED French The main force in the western half of Europe and the only real immeadiate threat to the Central Powers there, France can be a fun civ to play as. You as the French will enjoy a sufficiently sized army and a navy that can take care of Germany's allthough you will find that much of it is based in the Medditeranian were it will not be much of a factor until you can move it up into the Atlantic. The western front as the French is in your advantige. You do not have to attack or keep attacking, you simply need to defend. Using your forces as reserves might work until you can builed a force sufficient for driving into Germany. HIGHLY RECOMENDED Great Britain Great Britain is by far the most powerful naval force in the game. Those who play as the UK should use this to their advantige whenever possible. The British army is not very large at first but grows due to troops arriving from the Empire at a regular basis. Don't count on these troops to turn the tide of the war however. HIGHLY RECOMENDED Russia Russia is probably not going to be a fun civ to play as. Their economy is in shambles, and the populace on the verge of collapse. They do however have a powerful army that continues to grow do to "peasent conscription" via the events file. The best advice that I can give you if you play as Russia is not to play as Russia. They make a much better civ left to Artificial Intelligence. NOT RECOMENDED BY MYSELF, OTHERS SEEM TO LIKE IT Italy Italy starts the scenario with a pathetic army and a navy that is sufficient for defending the Adriatic but not much else. Add the fact that they only have 10 turns before they go to war, and well, I dont know that you would have fun playing as them. Italy can be a blast to play if you go on the defensive at first and builed up an army capable of driving into the Central Power's south as their main army should be fighting in France and Russia. It can also be possible to invade the Turks and fight it out in the middle east, any way that you go you will still have a few turns wait before you can do anything though. RECOMENDED IF YOU DON'T MIND A LONG WAIT Ottoman Turks The Ottaman Empire is actually not too bad of a civ to play, I do not personally like them but that is just taste. Playing as the Turks you have a few choices as to how to attack. You can invade Russia from the Balkans, across the Black Sea, or in a major flanking movement through the Caucasus. You can also invade Britain's colonial possesions in the Middle East and Egypt if you so choose. I do not recomend fighting a two front war however as with any civ it is not likely to help you out. RECOMENDED, BUT NOT HIGHLY Americans and Neutrals I was bitterly dissapointed with the original WW1 scenario that featured America as little more than a pawn =( In this scenario I hope to have made them a force to be reckond with allthough not at first. They are under a Fundamentalism government simply so that they can have more units far away (I have renamed the government Democracy2). I always seem to have fun playing as the Americans and later in the scenario they are THE most powerful Civilization to play as. HIGHLY RECOMENDED The Map *********************************************************************** I am not using anything new for a map mainly because this is just a huge update of the original WW1 scenario. Unfortunately this does not leave much room for improvement. It is adequete for the intended purpose however. I chose to change around the terrain however just to give the scenario more "flavor". The Units *********************************************************************** Let me first start off by apologizing to all the authers whos names are not featured in the units that they created. In all of my scenarios that I have made I always have the same problem that I think is caused by doing some editing of units from the "FW editor" built into the game once FW is installed. Rather than completely forget all of you (and recieve nasty emails in the process) I have taken the time to modify a "Unit Chart" that is included with this email that will have all the initials that I can find on it next to wich unit it is. If you see a unit here that you created but are not getting proper credit for, by all meens email me at JPski7@aol.com and I will change it post haste. The Technologies *********************************************************************** The technologys are exactly the same as the ones that originally came with this scenario except that when an American infantry dies for the 1st time to the Central Powers the Americans get "USA ENTERS WAR" wich gives them the technology to create extremely powerful units. If you are playing as the Central Powers you might want to leave the USA alone. Thank Yous and Acknowleadgements *********************************************************************** -Firstly I would like to thank Microprose for creating the original WW1 scenario that this was based on. -Thanks to Harlan Thompson for compiling over 500 units for me to choose from as I made this scenario (his WW2 units AND 1 Acient Unit) -Thanks to the author of the "Alt WW1" scenario. I don't know your name but I took the Red Baron unit from you as well as some ideas, thanks! -Thank you to Blackclove who playtested this scenario to a degree that influenced it's shape tremendously -Thanks to Dan Meadow for some suggestions as well. -The resource that I used for tank names was "The World's Great Tanks" by Roger Ford. This is a very useful book for anyone who wants to make a scenario that depicts tank battles and I recomend it. Other *********************************************************************** Well, I hope that you enjoyed this scenario, I put alot of work into it but that does not meen that it could not be better so if you see something that is "screwy" in it by all meens email me at JPski7@aol.com and I will change it! Also, if you enjoyed this scenario (and even if you didn't) then I encourage you to try out my first scenario "The New Germany". You can find it at Allard and Andrew's Civilization 2 sight (sorry I don't know the adress myself but if you type that into a search you should have fair luck!).
