A Good End in Badside - Synopsis |
|
Day 1 |
Placidus Treibonus is rudely ousted from bed by some Marble
Phalanx troopers who take him to see Sor-Eel the governor. After some official
pressure is applied Treibonus agrees to work for the Provincial government. He and
Jorjar, chief constable, go to Badside where they discover the mutilated corpse of a
follower of Yemalio, Cressidus Silvercloak, in a slaughter house. Some prominent Sun
Domers come to identify the body without bothering to divulge its
identity. Identification done with the corpse is sent to the Healer's Hall to see
what they can tell the investigators. Obtaining the services of a shaman and a Lhankor Mhy
priest the pair determine that the murder hadn't occurred there. Questioning the
locals doesn't produce anything helpful either. After the seer is finished they head
back to Pavis where they drop the female sage off at the Knowledge Temple and head to the
Lunar barracks for a late lunch. After lunch Treibonus sees Sor-Eel who brings him up to speed on the deceased's identity and what he had been doing in Pavis. They learn about the mission to Pavis from the Sartar Sun Dome and discover that it had left that morning. Treibonus gets his official writ of office from one of Sor-Eel's clerks. Treibonus then heads to Healer Hall where he learns that the deceased had been poisoned and smothered before being finally finished off with a stab from a knife. The mutilations had occurred after death. After this he returns home for a good night's sleep. In his room he finds another follower of Yemalio, Lord Belvani, and his pet dragonewt. Belvani offers his assistance in the investigation and promises to use his influence with the local Sun Domers. |
Day 2 |
Early in the morning Belvani comes to fetch Treibonus and the
pair head over to the Sun Dome temple to see Haloric Goldbrow after breakfast.
Treibonus brings Haloric up to speed on what he's learned so far and Haloric informs him
that the deceased had been staying at Silibar's Fancies rather than the temple. They
learn the identity of the templar who had announced the death to Sor-Eel as one Balarus
Reflected Glory, nephew to the local Light Priest Karial the Pure. Haloric informs
them that Balarus had left Pavis the same morning with a Lunar caravan and the rest of
Cressidus' men. Treibonus also learns that Belvani had a prior history with the
deceased. Haloric and Belvani say that Cressidus was a bastard and Belarus was an
exemplary templar. Treibonus asks to speak with Karial the Pure and Haloric says that he
will check Karial's schedule. Belvani and Treibonus question the staff at the Sun
Dome and they confirm the opinions Belvani and Haloric had of the pair. As they head
back to Haloric to check his progress with speaking with Karial they are intercepted by a
templar who informs them that a constable is at the gate to speak with Treibonus.
The constable informs him that another body has been found in some animal pens down by the
river. The pair head straight over to investigate and meet Jorjar and his men.
The corpse turns out to be Belarus who has had his throat slit. After the body is
investigated and found to have no evidence on it they send it to the Sun Dome Temple.
Treibonus leaves the crime scene to go have a bath and find some lunch. After his bath Treibonus heads over to Silibar's Fancies to investigate and have some lunch. After lunch he asks to see the owner and learns that Cressidus had been harassing the staff for sex. He gets the key to the door and finds the room in a complete mess. While checking out a chest he is attacked by a rubble runner which he manages to kill with a concealed dagger he carries. After complaining to the manager they discover that Cressidus' key to the room is missing and that no one had seen the person who had put the rubble runner in the chest. Treibonus then decided that he would head back to the Sun Dome temple to try and see Karial the Pure again. On the way he encounters a prophet and an elf. The prophet tells the crowd that the Red Moon would pass from the sky and some Lunar soldiers show up to arrest him. The elf and the prophet flee to the top of the Temple to Pavis where a large vine grows over the wall allowing them to escape into the Rubble. The soldiers try and give Treibonus a hard time for listening to the prophecy but he waves his writ in their faces and then goes home for a drink. While passing through the tunnel to Gimpy's he is abducted by some fishermen who put him in a basket and take him to their boss Hallarax the Singer, head of the Riverman's Guild. Part of a pro-Lunar faction in Pavis Hallarax wanted to tell Treibonus that his group had nothing to do with the murders. Treibonus was less than impressed by his means of communicating. He demanded money for another bath and some clean clothes and got it. After another bath he headed home for a bottle of wine and supper. As he ate Belvani showed up and after getting the cold shoulder from Treibonus the pair arranged to meet the following morning. After Belvani had left the prophet entered the Inn and sat down at Treibonus' table. The prophet favours Treibonus with a prophecy and then sucks all the light out of the room and leaves. At this high point Treibonus goes to bed. |
Day 3 |
Belvani comes and fetches Treibonus to go and try and see
Karial again. After reaching the temple and cooling their heels for quite a while
they see Karial only to learn that he is off to bury his nephew. They accompany the
Yemalian party to the funeral. After the funeral is over Treibonus spots a woman
lingering at Cressidus' graveside (it was a double funeral). He approaches this
woman only to discover that it's a man. After some unpleasantness the man, named
Petro agrees to talk to Treibonus back in Pavis. The pair reach the Beleagured
Buffalo and sit down to a lovely drink of kvass. There Treibonus learns that this
man was a business partner and lover of Cressidus. At this point a cacodaemon ripped
the front wall of the bar off. After dealing with the Impala rider owners and
patrons the monster turned its attentions to Treibonus. Amazingly a passing Uroxi attacks
the demon who turns to face him. Treibonus hacks at the demon's legs which only
succeeds in getting its attention and burning his hand with chaotic ichor. Treibonus
jumps up and hangs off of a throwing axe embedded in the thing's back as it turns to kill
him. Frustrated the demon stalks outside into the street to deal with
the uroxi who with no seeming effort manages to dispatch the brute. The uroxi comes
over to Treibonus and calling upon the power of Urox heals the chaos wound in his hand.
After explaining events to Jorjar and Hucipites, leader of the Marble Phalanx
Treibonus receives permission to leave. As he makes his way through the crowd Petro
stops him. Treibonus arranges to meet him at Juli's. At Juli's over lunch Petro reveals that he and Cressidus had been in Pavis to see about eliminating the middle men in a hazia smuggling ring they were involved in. This explained the ogre connection so Treibonus decides he needs to stash Petro somewhere safe. He decides to hide him in a Zorak Zoran temple in the Rubble, paying the trolls with a huge stash of bolgs he owns. Petro is reluctant to do this but Treibonus doesn't offer him a choice in the manner getting Cletus the bouncer to lock him up until he can make arrangements for storing him. Treibonus arranges with a troll contact to approach the Zorak Zoran temple and then goes home. That night Gimpy's is awoken by the night watch, a band of trollkin used to patrol the streets, who have come looking for Treibonus. They take him to Bob's Bisonburger where he meets Chomper and an Argan Argar trader and a Zorak Zoran Death Lord. Treibonus discovers that the Zoranis have been letting him keep the bolgs but are happy to trade pet-sitting services for Petro for them. Feeling some trepidation about how safe a ZZ temple is for a human, never mind a sun worshipper Treibonus makes arrangements to give Petro to them for an unspecified time. He then returns home where he discovers a Corean courtesan in his bed. They, err exchange viewpoints, several times. Treibonus learns that the Emperor is interested in stopping the hazia trade into the Empire. |
Day 4 |
Treibonus gets up late and has a leisurely lunch after which he tries to think of what next to do. His breakfast is interrupted by a street urchin who delivers a message suggesting that if he goes to the Real City he will find out what is going on. Treibonus decides to walk into the obvious trap and asks the urchin to deliver a note to Belvani telling him where he went. After making preparations he sets off for the Real City. Once in the Rubble he is ambushed by some ogres who knock him out and take him to one of their lairs. The ogre leader fills Treibonus in on how the hazia trade in Prax works. After this brief discourse the ogres depart leaving Treibonus dangling as a treat for who or whatever discovers him. Fortunately Belvani is the one to find him (or at least Yemalio does). Belvani frees Treibonus and Treibonus explains what he thinks has happened so far. They search and then destroy the ogre's lair. After a good long soak at Juli's the pair go their separate ways. |
Day 5 |
The next morning the pair meet for breakfast. They start to head for the Willowgreen Association's offices when Treibonus decides to question Hallarax the Singer about them first. The pair learn some interesting tidbits about the Association, all rumour and hearsay mind you but interesting. They leave the River Guild offices and head over to the Willowgreen Association offices/residence and are impressed by the digs. They meet the local head of the Association, Throshush Alcides Hybarate who is irritated by the allegations against his association but he agrees to allow the pair to question the staff. Before lunch they question the male staff and after lunch they question the female staff members. They learn nothing from both groups. They want to question a young lady who served them in the morning but discover that there is no one on the staff who matches her description. The majordome confers with his master and then they get to meet the rest of the family in Pavis. |
