The Past
The United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT) was originally formed in 1956 to protect the Earth and it's inhabitants from threats outside the scope of normal military, para-military or law enforcement bodies. Although UNIT was extremely active in the fifties and sixties, operations began to slow down from 1968 onwards, and by 1972 UNIT had been deactivated and it's members returned to their regular duties.
What occured during these operations, or who they were operating against, remain a mystery, as these files are amongst the most protected, and remain unavailable even to the membership of the reactivated UNIT.
It is apparent, however, that the threats that UNIT had been created to defeat had ceased to be a threat.
The Present
Late in the evening of December 1st 2002, a platoon of German Fernspahtruppen were attacked by a large, unidentified creature. The creature was killed, but so were eleven of the twelve soldiers; the survivor died in hospital from wounds inflicted by the creature1.
At 23:45 on the 3rd of December, a patrol from the Provisional Afghan Army, commanded by American officers, was ambushed. A search by US Special Forces A Team 309 found the remains of the patrol, as well as the tracks of their attacker. The patrol had been, to qoute the officer in command, "chewed upon". 309 and a company of Afgahns followed the tracks to a temple deep in a ravine. Upon entry, 309 and their allies were attacked. Their attackers contiued to fight, despite been subject to heavy gunfire, often falling down, only to rise sweveral minutes later. While heavier weapns proved more successful, with only three grenade launchers the situation was dire. They were eventually extracted by a company of Rangers. Loses came to 93 of 100 Afghans and 2 Special Forces2.
These and other incidents prompted the reactivation of UNIT on 21st of December 2002. Despite backing in high places, particularly US SOCOM and the British Military, UNIT has had some trouble recruit operators. It is hoped that time and results will turn this around.
