Created by Morgoth during the First Age, in immitation of the Ents, Trolls were formed from stone, crude but useful parodies of the proud Tree-Wardens. The Wild Trolls are descended from those original Trolls, living in places like the Trollshaws. Cave Trolls are the most common, and most sociable, of Trolls, living in small family groups in a large cave. They live off what meat they can hunt; Men, Orcs, Dwarves. When no other meat can be found, they will eat their weaker relatives. Hill Trolls live in small, territorial groups. These are the Wild Trolls most often used by Sauron as highly expendable shock troops. The thought of a Troll armed and trained to use it's weapons should be appropriately frightening. Forest Trolls are the least violent breed of Trolls, and they prefer the meat of Man or Dwarf to that of their own kind. Stone Trolls are the best known in stories, and the most intelligent (INT 1d6+6). They spend much of their time hoarding other people's treasures, then boasting to other Stone Trolls of it. When exposed to the direct rays of the sun, they will revert to the stone they were made from. The white-furred Snow Trolls are a rare breed that survive in the extreme north, occasionally preying upon the Lossoth, the Men that make their homes around the Ice Bay of Forochel. When exposed to the rays of the sun, they turn into pillars of icy slag.
Trolls despise the light of the Sun, and prefer to sleep during the hours of daylight. However, with the unfortunate exception of Stone & Snow Trolls, they can still see well enough to engage in combat if the need is there. Under starlight they can see as well as a man during the day. In near darkness they can still see well out to 50'; in total darkness, they can still see out to 10'.
