Orcs

Orcs, Yrch, Goblins. The despised servant of the Darkness are ever a threat to the free peoples of Middle-Earth. Men, Dwarves and Hobbits may hate and fear them, but for true disgust and violent hatred, one has to go a long way to beat an Elf faced with Orcs.

Male Orcs are, by definition, warriors. Orkish society is violent, and only the tough and capable survive. They do not die of old age, and are mostly immune to diseases, but living a long time takes a special Orc.

Female Orcs are never seen, except when an Orc hole is being cleared out. The females are kept segregated, kept safe to breed more litters of Orcs.

Orcs despise the light of the Sun, and prefer to sleep during the hours of daylight. However, they can still see well enough to engage in combat if the need is there. Under starlight they can see as well as a man during the day. In near darkness they can still see well out to 50'; in total darkness, they can still see out to 10'.

Orkish
There is no one Orkish tongue. Each colony of Orcs speaks a different tongue, but they all share a brutal, savage outlook, suited best for talking of violence anf hate. When Orcs from differing regions have to communicate, they whatever speech men is common thereabouts; Orcs in the north-west use Westron, often broken, to communicate with each other. Of course, this means they can spy on the goings on of Men with more ease.

On occasion,an Orc may learn Morbeth, the Black Tongue of Sauron.

  • Outfitting Orc Characters
    Orc characters begin with weapons, the best armour then can gather, and maybe a warg.
    Clothing
    Males: short hide kilt,; leather wrist guards; leahter boots. The hides and leather are generally undyed, and sometimes untanned.
    Females: a hide tunic, falling to mid-thigh.
    Weapons
    Club, dagger, handaxe, scimitar, shortbow, spear, whip.
    Armour
    Common orcs are lucky to be wearing scraps of rigid leather and a leather helm; shields are rare. In more proserous Orc holds (Mount Gundabad), loot may provide better armour. Orcs in the service of Mordor can expect better, maybe scales of black iron. In all cases, the best gear is retained for the strongest and smartest.
