Peoples of Middle-Earth in the Third Age of the Sun

The Mornûmenedain

The Black Nûmenoreans

When Nûmenor sunk beneath the waves in 3319 SA, not all the 'unfaithful' were dragged to the ocean's floor with it. Along the coast of Harad imperial outposts had been established to exert the power of Nûmenor, and in these places did many survive the Downfall. Bitter, and afraid, they blamed the Elves and the 'faithful' Dûnedain for this destruction, and ever after bent their hearts against them.

They became known as the Mornûmenedain (sing. Mornûmenadan), Black Nûmenoreans, and much troubled Gondor at various times in the Third Age. Their accute awareness of their own potential and their fear of death left them open to the temptations of Sauron. Earlier, three lords of Nûmenor had become Ringwraiths. Now, other servants came from this folk to learn dark things at the Enemy's knee. The foremost of these lesser servants was the Mouth of Sauron.

Like all those descendants of Nûmenor, the Mornûmenedain are a tall people, much taller than the Haradrim that constitute their subjects in the great ports from Umbar southwards. Like the Dûnedain, Black Nûmenoreans have married into subject populations to some degree, and this can be seen in their dusky complexions, dark eyes, and darker hair.

Attributes:

Adûnaic
The Mornûmenedain cleaved harder to the language of their lost homeland than did the Dûnedain of Arnor and Gondor. They see it as a source of pride. However, the peoples of the Havens they ruled were of the Haradic peoples, to whom Adûnaic was a colonial language. Such circumstances, as well as the need to make allies amongst a people who were not subjects, caused the Black Nûmenoreans to learn local tongues. So it was that Haradic words made it into the ancient language of the west.
