Chapter 1 David was bored, but he knew it would be over soon. The flight had only been a few hours and was nearly over, but to him it seemed like days of monumental boredom. At least the scenery had now improved, even though it had long ago passed into night time. They were descending over Japan now, and would be landing soon. To his left, his parents were have a silly argument about the whether they had gained or lost a day on this flight, crossing over the pacific and the international date line. He rolled his eyes upwards, and stared boredly out of the window. It was then that he received the greatest shock of his life out there, he saw a tall man, dressed in what seemed to be a black military uniform with a long cape, standing on the wing as if the plane were parked on the ground! Before he even had time to think about it, the man produced a glowing rod in his hand, apparently out of nowhere. He raised it, then swiftly swept it downwards, slicing through the wing before him like molten butter. Immediately the plane pitched steeply to that side as the bulk of the right wing was whipped away. People were screaming in their seats all around him. Suddenly he saw that man appear, from nowhere, in the middle of the aisle! He turned his sharp-featured face towards David and looked, it seemed, straight through him. The man raised his right hand and shot a bolt of black energy out of it which passed directly over his parents and struck David in his chest. It expanded to a globe that surrounded him and crushed him almost into a foetal position as it lifted him out of the seat. The man then turned to face a girl of about fourteen and did the same, capturing her in a sphere of the same kind of dark energy. As David blacked out he could swear he saw the plane fading before him… Raye Hino suddenly sat bolt upright in her bed in the shrine. She had felt an incredible disturbance in her sleep. Her mind was racing to get a hold on what it was. She wrestled with her thoughts. It was like… a warning maybe? Had she sensed something evil, even while asleep? No, it couldn’t be. She settled down and realised that she was gripped by a cold sweat. This is ridiculous, she thought, It’s just a bad dream. She rolled over and drew her blanket over her, trying to get back to sleep. In a different place altogether, a small, tinny alarm clock went off. Groggily an arm reached out from under a sheet next to the table that the clock sat on. It’s hand batted away vaguely at the poor clock and then found its mark, whacking a button that silenced it. The arm then retracted under the sheet. There was no more movement in the room for another half hour or so, when a small black cat jumped in through the window. It yawned loudly and muttered to itself, “Now for a well-earned sleep.” The cat jumped up onto the bed, where it was surprised to find the bed still occupied. Luna glanced at the alarm clock, and was shocked. “She’s slept in that long?” she said to herself. “Serena! Wake up, Serena!” it called out to her. No response from the girl under the sheet. Luna walked up to the head of the bed where Serena had pulled the blanket over her head. Luna grabbed the top edge in her mouth and pulled it back, to find Serena lying on her front. She waved a paw in front of the girl’s face, and batted her on the cheek a few times while calling out her name. No response. “This calls for desperate measures,” she said to herself as she padded her way to about half- way down the bed. She felt the contours under the sheet to find her target, then extended a single claw from her right forepaw and jabbed it down hard. Instantly, Serena leapt out of the bed wailing and clutching her behind. She looked around, and soon spotted Luna crawling out from under the wreckage of Serena’s rapidly discarded blanket. “Geez, Luna,” she winged rubbing her backside, “What’d you do that for?” The cat replied “You’re already half an hour late to get up which, even for you is quite an accomplishment. Get your act together!” she bellowed angrily. “Half an hour?!? Yow!” Serena ran around in a panic, looking for her uniform, and then dashed into the bathroom where it had been lying crumpled in the laundry basket for the weekend. She then suddenly ran back into her room with it and quickly pulled it on. She dashed out again, bellowing, “I’m gonna be late, I’m gonna be late!” Luna sighed. “That girl,” she thought aloud, “I’d have my doubts about her if she hadn’t already saved the world twice!” Serena then suddenly rushed back into her room, grabbed her school case and raced out again. “Check that,” Luna said, dismayed. Serena dashed into the classroom, almost barging the door down in her hurry just as the bell rang. Her whole class was already there, unusually quiet as she stopped by the door and caught her breath. “Sorry… I’m late,” she panted as her teacher looked at her, arms folded and eyes narrowed with a mixture of dismay and pure rage. As Serena slunk into her accustomed seat, she saw that someone else was standing out the front next to her teacher. A girl about Serena’s age and height, with very short black hair. She was dressed in a skirt and blouse rather than the regular school uniform. Serena whispered to Molly next to her, “What’s going on?” Molly quietly shushed her, and she turned back to the front. “Now that we’re all here,” the teacher said, glaring at Serena as she spoke the last word, “I’d like to introduce a new member to this class. This is Diane Masters, who has just recently transferred from America.” “Pleased to meet you,” Diane said in a cold tone while bowing slightly. “I hope we’ll all get along well.” “Doesn’t strike me as the most pleasant of people,” Serena muttered to Molly. “Lay off it. She’s probably just scared about being in a new school, that’s all,” Molly replied. “Would anyone like to show her around the school for her first few days?” Serena shot up her hand and waved it in the air like a maniac. “Me, me, oh me, miss.” “Well, I guess if it’s okay with you,” she said turning to Diane, who quietly nodded. “Alright then. You can sit next to Serena,” she said, indicating to the desk Serena had sat at before being moved for staring out the window too much. Diane walked over silently and sat down at the desk. Serena turned to her. “Oh, I know this is going to be just great! A new friend and all, and you’re going to have a wonderful time here, I just bet we’ll become great friends and all, oh, and you should meet my friends, they are the coolest, and…” she trailed of into any number of rantings. Diane merely turned her head slightly away from Serena, looked out the window at the city and thought to herself; Not her. “Silenna, come forth.” At her master’s command, the woman materialised before his throne. The place was dark and bare, unused since the destruction of Queen Beryl and her soldiers. Her master sat on the throne where Queen Beryl had once sat, commanding her troops in a failed effort to conquer the planet. He was dressed in a black version of the same outfit Beryl’s officers had worn, but with the addition of a long, flowing black cape. He was strongly built, and had a handsome face with rugged features, framed by medium-length black hair. He also wore a neatly trimmed black beared. “You, Silenna are my finest creation,” he addressed his subject. “I am in dire need of your services.” “What are your orders?” “Follow your allies to the city. I need you to create a distraction and engage the Sailor Scouts when they arrive.” “Am I to do nothing more?” “Nothing more. But make sure that they are all there.” “I go,” she said curtly, and rapidly faded from the room. Her master permitted himself a smile. Soon I will have better than the likes of you. “And so, that concludes the tour! What’d’ya think of the place, huh?” Serena asked Diane. School had just ended for the day. “Uh, nice.” Diane, in all honesty, was stunned. Okay, so she knew things weren’t going to be easy. She knew she’d have to deal with all kinds of strangers. But never had she expected the terror that was this fourteen year old girl and her incredible sweetness and nicety. It was driving her mad. “Hey, I’ve got the coolest idea. I’m meeting some of my friends down at the game arcade later. Do you wanna come and meet them?” More of Serena’s friends? she thought, The other two were bad enough. When they met Lita at lunch, she was roughing up the school bully, two grades above her! And as for Amy… Well, no-one can possibly be that mundane and boring… Can they? “Uh…” She said, exasperated, “No thanks. I got a lot of work to do.” “You’re not one of those study freaks like Amy are you?” She regained her composure. “No, but it would help a lot to catch up on the work you’ve been doing here. It’s quite different,” she added. “Well, fine, whatever,” Serena responded. “See you later!” “Bye,” Diane replied curtly. The girl scared her, almost. How could anyone possibly be so ditzy and useless? It didn’t matter. Serena obviously wasn’t one of the Scouts. And if she is, Diane thought, They’ll be so easy to crush. Serena was in a good mood as she walked to the arcade. She’s quite nice actually, she thought to herself, But far too closed off. I wonder what’s with her? Have to ask some day. “Hey, watch were you’re going!” Came an incredulous voice from around foot level. Serena suddenly stopped and looked down to see that she’d almost stepped on poor Luna. “Oh, hi, sorry Luna. Didn’t see you there.” “Not surprising, seeing as your head’s off in the clouds again.” “Oh, I had a great day today. We’ve got this wonderful new student and she sits next to me, and we’re great friends already, and she…” “One thing at a time! Please, you’ve got to stop babbling so much!” “Huh?” said Serena, suddenly stopping. She looked around for a bit. “Did you say something Luna?” Luna seemed to crash to the ground when Serena said this. “Do try to pay more attention,” she scolded her, after picking herself up off the pavement. “Oh, I don’t care what you say, I had a wonderful day today and nothing’s going to spoil it!” At that very moment, a shadowy black-clad figure tore around the corner ahead of them and barged past Serena and Luna. It was followed closely by Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Mercury, the latter of which said “It’s some kind of monster,” as she ran past. Luna stood looking confused for a second. “Serena! Serena, you’ve got to help them! Serena!” she called out again when she received no answer, and then realised that Serena had already bolted after them. Silenna dashed into a park and looked around. I need somewhere to hide, before they get here, she thought. Damn those Scouts, why can’t they work together for once. She set off down one path, and then suddenly in a flash a girl in a white outfit with red bows appeared before her. “Where do you think you’re going?” Sailor Mars bellowed at her. “You’ve terrorised innocent people,” said Venus arriving on the scene, “and for that you must be punished!” “Thanks for catching her, guys,” said Jupiter as she and Mercury arrived on the scene. Silenna looked around, and saw herself to be surrounded by white-suited girls. She jumped into the air, flipping over as she went, and threw a number of energy discs down at the Scouts. They jumped away from the blast, and mars was the first to react. “Mars Celestial Fire Surround!” She shot six spinning disks of flame at the ninja-like monster in mid-air, but she avoided them and landed. Barely had she set foot on ground, than Silenna leapt into the air again as Venus shot a chain of glowing hearts at her that would certainly have bound her to her doom. From nearby, Diane watched the battle progress. The Sailor Scouts at last, she thought, and reached for a necklace she was wearing. She suddenly felt a familiar presence behind her, and a deep and refined voice said “Wait. Not yet.” “Had enough yet?” Jupiter called out to the monster. It had dodged every shot they sent at it, but clearly looked like tiring. “Not on your life!” She sent two glowing darts hurtling at Jupiter which went wide. The Scouts launched another round of attacks on it, which it easily dodged, leaping out of the way of every single one. “You jokes couldn’t harm a flea!” “Don’t bet your life on that!” came a shrill voice from nearby. Sailor Moon landed in the middle of the ring of Sailor Scouts, just next to the monster. “I am Sailor moon, champion of justice and seriously ticked off that you ruined my perfect day! So in the name of the moon, I’ll punish you!” “You took your sweet time to get here!” Mars yelled at her. “Lay off it will ya? I had to find somewhere to change,” Sailor Moon answered. “It can’t take that long, can it?” “Well I can’t just change anywhere, you know!” The other scouts looked exasperated, and a large sweat drop trickled down Silenna’s face. “Are they always like this,” she asked quietly, turning towards Mercury who was the closest. “I’m afraid so,” she replied, before she realised who she was talking to. “Oh yeah, well you -“ Mars cut off in mid-sentence. She had felt it again! That strong sense of evil that had woken her up was back, and much stronger too. She felt it drawing closer… “Scatter!” She cried out to the Scouts. The Master appeared in mid-air bearing down on her, glowing sword in hand, and swiped down at the ground. Mars leapt aside, avoiding the swing. He landed, and raised his left hand into the air. Bolts of black energy shot out around him, one blasting towards each scout. Mercury, Venus and Jupiter were hit by the bolts of energy and instantly encased in a glowing force field. Sailor Moon and Mars dodge the ones aimed at them. The master then swept towards Mars, sword drawn back, and swung it down when she was close by. She dodged to her right, but suddenly the Master reached out his hand, palm flat out, and touched her on the side of her face. Mars felt a spark of energy flow through her, but his hand brushed off almost immediately. He then darted towards Mercury and Venus, leaving mars behind. Silenna meanwhile darted towards Sailor Moon, throwing energy disks as she approached. Sailor moon clumsily avoided them, tripping and falling as she dodged the last one. Silenna then produced a glowing sword, similar to her masters, and swung down at her prone form. Sailor Moon barely managed to avoid the swing, and quickly rose to her feet. Silenna swept back the sword, and was about to bring it down on Sailor moon, when six disks of fire swept between them, giving Sailor Moon a chance to back off. The Master dashed between Mercury and Venus’ struggling forms with his arms outstretched and his sword dissipated. An instant before he reached them, he dispelled their force fields, and brushed both of them at the same time with his hands. He then turned towards Jupiter, who was struggling with her force field. As he rapidly approached, she summoned up all her strength and broke free. “Now have a taste of my power!” she yelled, when he stopped his advance, and threw a ball of electricity at him. He extended his hand forwards and caught the blast in mid-air, when it promptly exploded in a burst of energy. Jupiter stood stunned at his power, and he suddenly dashed forwards, saying “I’m not that easy to get rid of, girl.” He grabbed Jupiter by both wrists and held her tight. “You’re powerful, but that’s useful to me!” so saying, he began draining the strength out of Jupiter’s body. “Jupiter!” cried out Venus as her colleague screamed in pain. “Venus Heart Chain Encircle!” A chain of hearts suddenly flicked between them, and wrapped itself around the Master. Venus pulled on the end, tipping him of his feet and breaking the link with Jupiter, who then collapsed to her knees, weakened. Venus yelled out “Sailor moon! Get him now!” “Right you are!” came the reply. “Moon Sceptre Elimination!” Sailor moon reached forwards, and her sceptre appeared in mid air for her. She circled it about her body, charging energy, then unleashed it all in the Master’s direction. He cursed, and then vanished as the energy streamed through Venus’ heart chain, only to reappear a distance from the Scouts. “Silenna, we have what we came for.” His servant looked towards him, then jumped backwards away from the Scouts to land in front of her Master. “We go now!” As they began to fade, Mercury blasted a howling wind of cold and ice towards them. The master leapt into the air and hung there as the wind wrapped around Silenna, and she collapsed to her knees, clutching herself and shivering with cold. She looked up at the Master, pleading for help, but he merely scowled. “You are weak. I leave you to your fate,” he said, and was gone. “NO!” Silenna howled out to the park around her. Glowing with energy she rose to her feet. “You worms have cost me everything!” she screamed at them, and raised her hands above her body. A ball of energy rapidly formed in each one and grew steadily, as the glow around her increased. “Jupiter Thunder Dragon!” Suddenly a huge bolt of lightning shot out from behind the fearful scouts. In mid air it formed itself into a huge glowing dragon, composed of electricity, and engulfed Silenna. She screamed as the energy she sought to control collapsed and consumed her in a massive fireball. “Oh, am I glad that’s over,” Serena said to her scouts as they walked down the street away from the park. “I tell you I was so ticked at her for ruining my day. And such a wonderful day I had too!” she said, suddenly brightening. Behind her, Mina quietly asked Lita if she was feeling okay. “Sort of, I guess,” she replied. The girl had gotten up after the fight and insisted she was fine, but was looking very pale and walking slowly. “He took a lot out of me. I’m sure I’ll be fine in a few days.” Serena was ranting on to Raye (who really wasn’t listening) about the fabulous day she’d had and all, when Raye suddenly cut in. “Do you mind? Your friend is unwell, and all you can do is go on about your day at school!” “She’s right, Serena,” said Luna from below them. “But she said she was fine, so she’s fine. Where’s the problem?” Serena replied. “Well, that’s just it you see? You’ve got to pay more attention and be more perceptive. For starters -“ “Oh Luna,” she whined, “do you have to lecture?” “Yes I do. You don’t even pay any attention to where you’re going for -“ As she spoke, head turned to look up at Serena, Luna managed to wander straight into a telegraph pole. She collapsed onto her hind legs, her head reeling from the blow. “Tsk, tsk, Luna,” Serena nagged, “you really should watch where you’re going.” “I just can’t win some days,” Luna bemoaned.
