Heads, Limbs, and Other Body Parts: The Art of Ghols

Intro

The Ghol is often an under-used unit. That is becuase many don't relize the potential of such a unit. True it isn't a unit to go 1v1 with a warrior, but it doesn't need to. In fact, use the ghol correctly, and you WILL be able to go 1v1 with a warrior. Don't believe me? Read on. . . . .

Commando, Assassin, and Sneak Attack Tactics

Truth is ghols can't fight. More or less. Agaisnt warriors or Stygian Knights that is. Dwarf vs. Ghol? Who's gonna win? Ghol. At least if i'm using him. This tactic i'm about to explain can be used for any unit, and in fact I killed a dwarf with this using a Stygian Knight (Dwarve vs. Stygian Knight, who'd a thought? Poor King alric ;) i beat him that time), but ghols are probably the best at it.
Long Range Units don't fire at close range; without killing themselves. The archer is an exception, but most people don't know how to shoot arrows at point-blank or use their (kitchen) knifes*, so this will work with them too. The key with a ghol is to get in their face (literally) and so they can't shoot. They run, and get cut down running away. Dwarves, archers, warlocks, etc.(that are long-range units) generally don't have much health, so if you can get in their face and start chewing them up, they haven't a chance. To "get in the face" of a dwarf, you have to do the following. . . .

1)ZigZag and hope he misses. Then you blitz the dwarf and cut him down. This is what i did with my stygian knight. hehe. but first i hid behind a tree which brings me to the second tactic.
2)This one i prefer and recommend. Unfortunately, the scenario may not allow of this(e.g. no trees). You hide behind a tree or the side of a building, and rush the unit. By the time they turn around (granted they even saw you) they won't be able to get a shot off.

Scenario I: Dwarven Mortar vs. Ghol

Its Venice, and a stupid mortar dwarf is on the top of the fort in the center. The 'mortar has an advantage spot so he can rain down 'mortars on those inside the fort. But he doesn't realize he's perfect bait. . . . for your ghol. You ghol is hiding behind one side of the fort, and then you run around the corner and up the mound. Poor 'mortar, he never had a shooting solution. And the 'mortar was savagely cut down by a ghol.

Scenario II: Warlocks vs. Ghols

What a shame, Warlocks make it soooo easy for you. In fact, bungie decided to make a whole level of 40+ warlocks, just to try and give you a challenge against you and six berserks (they probably thought a ghol would be TOO easy). Warlocks, with the rare exception of a warlock hero, fire two fireballs per mana bar (the blue bar at the time). So once they've fired their two fireballs, they have to wait a while to charge up, and during this period you charge and cut him down as he is defenseless. Or, supposing your opponent is smarter than this, you have to use the same tactic as above (hiding behind something to get yourself closer to the victim).

Well, either zigzagging, or hiding behind something, the object is to get closer to the target. Once you are inside his envelope (of firing to close), you have him (and he's screwed).

Throwing Things

Ahh, yes. If you have your ghol selected, you can click on something (granted you don't already have something in your hand) and a green box will appear around the object. Your ghol walks to it, and picks it up. If you then click on an enemy, he'll walk up to him and throw it at him. I honestly have no idea how effective it is, but i can't imagine a fishing rod doing him much harm (and yes i've picked up a fishing rod before). However, their are two strategies that involve picking up stuff that actually are quite,. . .uh. . . . .delightful, yes. That's it. splended.

Wights

So your wight was killed by archers before you could kill someone with it. Well, hey, it was dead to begin with, right? And its dead know, right? So who says he won't do anything now?
A wight's flesh is paralyzing; what ever it touches is hurt and frozen still. A ghol can pick up the flesh and throw it at the enemy freezing them and hurting them. They are then frozen in place to be shot at, or hit.

Satchel Charges

Don't you always wish that their was a few satchel charges in the middle of that oncoming army? Well, now there is! Have a few of your dwarves drop a satchel charge or two. Then have your ghols pick them up. As the army comes, send your ghols rush forward to attack them, having your archers and dwarves ready. Your ghols will throw the charges at the enemy, and you shoot a flaming arrow, or some "dwarven ale" and blow up the satchel charge, and the army, sky high.

Conclusion

Used correctly, Ghols can be one of your better units. And i can't stress how much fun it is to use them either. good hunting ;)
