Maiuth is his original name in that it was the name he was given at birth (not his true name but it's still an important point). After some uncomfortable incidents involving his animating the remains of natives of Myth Drannor, the brilliant but somewhat insane nelluonkkar was subjected to a high magic ritual at the behest of his concerned mother. His original memories were sealed and he was given the created identity of Aliron, a good-natured and rather benevolent student of the Art (and a distant cousin of the "absent" Maiuth).

Eventually, his mother (who Aliron thought of as a distant aunt) died of grief for her lost (but misguided) son. Maiuth's original interest in the arts of the nelluonkkar never faded and manifested in Aliron as well, although Aliron's personality focused more on the milder illusionary aspects of the art. It would have remained this way were it not for the original fiendish assault on Myth Drannor. Under somewhat mysterious circumstances (perhaps due to the stress, perhaps due to the warping of the mythal), the original "Maiuth" personality resurfaced and would remain the dominant personality for centuries until recent years.

In his undead state, the two personalities were finally reconciled and Aliron (who has taken the name "Maiuth" to honour his parents) has become the dominant personality once more. Under situations of extreme stress, there are times when the Maiuth personality may be stirred to act (and unlike Aliron, Maiuth has no qualms about utilizing spells such as circle of death or finger of death). 1
