Back

My first experience in role-playing was in 1994, with a middle-school friend of mine who I knew was wild about Dragonlance, but quickly learned was also an avid (though not yet playing) collector of the last incarnation of D&D before that game went the way of the dinosaur. After that, a rapid succession of games followed, mostly with friends, but by ’96, it had pretty much coalesced into D&D.

After graduating high school, I stopped playing for a while, and focused mostly on tac-gaming. I participated in a fun, if limited, Heavy Gear campaign run by a new friend recently arrived in Austin, and maintained contact with my two best friends living in California and Spain.

This led to a Feng Shui campaign, and several of the core players in that campaign (myself included) joined a newly-forming D&D3E group. A year after this, the Feng Shui game wound down, and I announced an intent to run Star Wars, which was where I really became friends with Mike. He wanted to play and ended up bailing my rear end out of several sessions that I wasn’t keen on running, but hadn’t cancelled in the hope I could come up with something. When I departed the 3rd Ed group Mike and I were in, he told me that Gordon had just started running Titan, and that I should ask Gordon if he wouldn’t mind another player.

At this time, I knew Gordon by face and reputation, but not directly by name. I asked, and he said, “Sure.” The next weekend, I showed up dutifully, slightly early to get an “okay” for Niamh, and had a ball. And the rest, as they say, it history.

The systems I have played include most versions of D20, AD&D, Shadowrun, MechWarrior, Robotech/Rifts, 7th Sea, Feng Shui, and WEG’s old Star Wars. As a gamer, I have an ongoing quest to collect the core rules for games that were dying as I was beginning to game, and I get a lot of mileage out of these old beauts. My preferences are mainly for D20 and 7th Sea, but I’m willing to try out just about anything once.

With respects to wargaming and miniatures, I am an avid collector of miniatures, though my commitment to painting could use some boosting. I started wargaming (and gaming in general) with FASA Corporation’s mecha game BattleTech, (may dearly-departed FASA rest in peace) and still have a commitment to that particular game. I also collect (and sometimes play) Warhammer and WH40K, Heavy Gear, Chainmail (new version), and Iron Kingdoms War Machine.
