FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Jay's Journey by Jason Godding, 4/8/2002 Jay's Journey is an RPGMaker 2000 game I made in my free time. I recieved very good responses for the game, but also a lot of questions about it. This should clear up a few. This is full of spoilers for the Jay's Journey storyline. Reader beware. GAMEPLAY QUESTIONS Q. I'm in Cymore, and I don't know what to do! Those idiot guards in the guardhouse won't move! A. Sleep in the inn and view the cutscene. Then visit the pub and talk to people until you get a new ally. Now go back to the guardhouse and talk with the guards. Q. I'm in Pecot Castle and that guard keeps catching me! How can I keep him from seeing me?! A. You can't. Once he sees you and the dialogue finishes, but before he catches up to you, run away. Q. What do I do in the Ice Temple the second time? One switch seems to do nothing, and I can't continue! A. Flip the farthest switch one time. Then move so that Jay's body is obscured by the black shadow but his head is still visible. You'll need to remember this trick for later. Q. I just got Shade. Where do I go next? A. Bantu, where Cindel said she was going. Get back on the canoe and head west, around the world. Q. Do I need to spend {whatever amount} on {whichever vehicle}? A. Yes. Q. Now that I have the steamship, where to I go? A. Inshire. It's southeastish of Dambaro. Q. Okay, now where? A. Artengo, due north of Pecot. Q. I just saw Thinbeard at Elwood. Now where do I go? A. Wander around near Cliffside. See if there isn't something unusual in the area. Bring the steamship. Q. Okay, what is this tank good for? A. Take it to a shrine east of Elwood. There are two, but you can only reach one. Q. How do I get to Occula? A. Complete most of the trading subquest. Q. Okay, wise guy, how do I complete the trading subquest? A. Pixie gives hints if you talk to her on the balloon after the second major scene in Cliffside. In case you don't get all the hints, let's take this one step at a time: Kyro - speak to Jarogo at the inn, then talk to the fisherman outside. Bring the pole to Jarogo, and get his badge. Nifton - Trade the badge to a young boy to get a medal, and then trade the medal to an old man for a clear gem. Pecot - Trade the clear gem for a wooden board to a man nead the entrance. Dambaro - Bring the wooden board to Jarogo, who is once again in the inn. He'll give you a letter to take to Cymore. Cymore - Give the letter to a woman in the house with the hyperactive kids. She'll give you hiking boots. Bantu - Give the boots to a man near the entrance to the mountain trail to get an egg. Then, take the egg to the top of the mountain. You can't do the second step unless Puff is on the overall (not necessarily active) party. As you leave, be sure to pick up the golden feather. Cliffside - You cannot do this as Gaia. Talk to one townsperson and she'll take the feather. Start to leave and Jarogo will appear. She'll still get away but Jarogo will tell you to go to an island south of Inshire. The island - The cave Jarogo wanted to enter will be blocked off. Talk to Jarogo and he'll give you a key with Omelio's name on it. Omelio's House - you can't do this until Omelio leaves. Open his treasure box and collect some dynamite. Back to the island - Give the dynamite to Jarogo and he'll blast open the cave. Wander through the cave to reach Occula and continue the game. In the treasure vault in the cave, Jarogo will take some of the treasure and leave the rest for you. Most of the treasure consists of common items and equipment, but one item is a pearl necklace. The next two steps are optional. Elwood - A woman lost her pearl necklace. Give her yours and she'll give you a membership card for the arena in Lango. Lango - Talk to the guard at the arena and he'll let you in. You can fight for boost items, Jay's Hero's Sword and Jay's Ultima Sword book. Q. I messed up Antignarot's Puzzle Room! I can't use your solution any more! Now what? A. You can't mess it up so badly that you can't win. Try to flip every switch (except A) so that it points left and start the sequence over. Since you won't be able to reach A if you already pulled it, don't worry about it. Then use my solution. When you get to the point where you're supposed to flip A, skip it. Q. After I leave for the mountain that looks like a volcano, can I go back? A. No. Q. Why not? A. Because I was too lazy to code for human Atolla in all the tagalong events. No, really, that's the reason. Q. I don't like the way I set up my parties on that volcano. Can I change them? A. Yes. Just have the active character talk to another. Jay must always be in the first position on the first team, though. Q. I have to fight Xanabas with all three parties! But I've only really used four! What now? A. You could split up your high-levelled characters (see above). Level up the underdogs with the Sub-Demons. STORYLINE QUESTIONS Q. Just who taught Carol magic? A. Freelance lessons from one of Cindel's soldiers. Q. What is Jay's pendant for? A. Really, nothing. I was intending to use it in the sequel. Q. Who is that hooded woman I saw in Occula? A. More sequel material. Q. Grr... okay, how about Sonata. A. Did I mention the sequel? Q. When will the sequel be released? A. Beats me. It might never be released. Q. Ugh. Okay, okay, okay. I was playing the demo for the sequel. Who are the new characters I see on the title screen? A. Xerxes Paramont the Knight, Sylvia Carmicle the Blue Mage, and Cecilia Tessall the Archer. Huff (Puff's daughter) is technically a new character too. Q. Will the old characters appear, assuming the game gets made? A. Puff absolutely will. Globule, Pixie, and Shade will not. I haven't decided with Frost and Gaia. Everyone not on the title screen will be an NPC. OPTIONAL STUFF QUESTIONS Q. How do I get secret characters? A. Globule can be found in Pecot Castle sewers. You need the steamship. Float around the first "island" to another one in the back. To get Ames, you must beat the first Emerald Dragon with Ames and Cindel, OR in the room immediately before the Emerald Dragon on Ames's side, search the right wall. You'll find a secret passage. Enter and you'll see a switch. Ignore it and walk to the bottom right-hand corner and you'll hear a sound as if you stepped on a switch. Switch over to Jay and go north through the door. Switch back over to Ames and step on the visible switch in the secret room. Switch back over to Jay, and now you can fight the Emerald Dragon without Ames's intervention. If Ames fights and loses to the Emerald Dragon, you lose him as a playable character. Q. What about ultimate weapons? A. Everyone except Atolla an Puff has an ultimate weapon. Jay: Win from the warrior woman in the arena. Carol: Find in a barrel on the airship. Max: Find in a barrel in the barn in Bantu. Frost: Land the airship near a cave in the mountains north of Mentilla. This is the chest above the room where you met Shade. Gaia: Inside her clock, but only after you get the airship. Shade: In the cave north of Artengo (where flashback #5 takes place). This is the only ultimate weapon you can get prior to getting the airship. (Well, okay, MAYBE Jay's too.) Cindel: In the Dragon's Hole. Pixie: Visit the shrine near hers that you can only reach with the airship. Then, fly around in the airship and you'll occasionally meet a monster. Beat it up (you'll have to meet it several times) and it'll fork over the Faerie Blade. Globule: Visit the swamp on the same island as Inshire. With Globule in the active party, enter. Speak to a pink slime, and later a purple one, to get the Slime Medal (okay, it's not TECHNICALLY a weapon but it's close enough.) Ames: In the Dragon's Hole. Q. Is there any point to getting Ames's ultimate weapon if you don't get Ames? A. Well, you DO get him temporarily in the Dragon's Hole. If you're already past that point, then no. Q. Where are all of Jay's books? A. Fire - In the Ice Temple. Ice - In the basement of Pecot Tower. During the renovation, push a barrel from the top floor into a hole. It will fall all the way to the basement. Light - Get in the Cave of the Seventh Circle. Wind - In the cave leading to Dambaro, on the first screen, there is an oddly-colored section of ground. Stand on it, look left, and hit enter. You'll open up a room with the Wind Sword Book in it. Earth - In Inshire Wood. Dark - Head to the area northwest of Artengo. Occasionally, you'll find an Imp here. Defend for several turns, and the Imp will transform into Rimp the demon. Beat him for the Dark Sword Book. Ultima - The same way you got Dark Sword, only in the arena in Lango. You must find an Imp, wait for it to transform, and kill Rimp. This time, though, you can only use Jay. Q. Okay, how about Shade's flashbacks? A. Here we go: 1. You see this one automatically after you enter Mentilla with Shade. 2. Examine the peephole in the mayor's house in Artengo. 3. Climb Mt. Zitherin near Leona. Shade must be in the active party. 4. Visit that mayor's house again - only this time, go through the front door. 5. Beat the monster in a cave north of Artengo. 6. With the airship, visit the grave near Artengo. Q. Why does Globule suck so much? A. Because you need to level him first, silly! Q. Why does Globule rock so much? A. For the sheer irony factor of a slime that can destroy everything in its wake. Q. Any other secrets? A. Well, there's always the Optional Dungeon. It's on the island with the skeleton by the entrance. Beat the boss of this dungeon for a worthless trinket you can use to show off to your friends. BUGS Q. What's going on? Jay has been dropped from my team, and now I'm playing as someone else!!! What gives?! A. Calm down. If you're in Cliffside and are suddenly Gaia, don't worry about it; that's what's supposed to happen. Otherwise, see the next question. Q. Am I supposed to have Esmida on my team after beating the Emerald Dragon? 'Cuz she's on the inactive party but my team is locked in place. A. I've heard several people mention this bug. I can't tell you what's up, because I can't recreate the problem on my own computer and not everyone even has the problem. If you let Ames "die" then this problem won't occur, according to what I've heard. The obvious problem here is, well, you don't have Ames. This bug may sound incredibly benign (especially since Esmida's stats are atrocious) but let me continue. If you don't have the newest version of the game, then the scene that's supposed to activate when you leave won't occur (it will in the newer versions with or without this bug.) Also, according to what I've heard, if this bug occurs and a Queen Eater gets the bright idea of eating the inactive Esmida, and then you call the switch menu, Jay will be knocked off the team. This is just asking for all sorts of trouble. (I haven't tested this, but maybe going into Cliffside's inn will remedy the problem? Or, if you can get that far without a serious bug happening, which is probably asking too much due to the scene in Leona, the second major scene in Cliffside might fix the error too.) I do not know what is going on. It may be a memory error. Anyone able to help? Q. I touched this rosebush and got transported to the Optional Dungeon. But when I leave, I'm nowhere near where I started. Help! A. What is so tempting about that stupid rosebush??? In one old version of the game, I accidently left in this little debug feature. The newest version doesn't have this, so upgrade. Q. I fought Xanabas and won, but then the game crashed. Why? A. Because I didn't do a very complete job of bugtesting and because you didn't get both Globule and Ames and don't have the newest version, that's why. Upgrade and try again. *********************************************************************** Well, that's all for now.
