Most of the other civilized countries use a similar rank system, but except for the lower end of the ranks and mercenary forces, the system is usually superceded by the rules of nobility.
The pay is for peace-time duty, or duty without movement or combat during war-time.
If on the move, each soldier with a rank below general can expect that pay per week (that is, about four times the base salary). They also expect a bonus equal to 3-5 times the monthly pay if the army wins a battle.
In addition to the pay, each soldier is given food (about 15 bb/month/man) and lodgings.
