LEARNING HOW TO OPEN!! *WARNING* do not spend alot of time learning tons of opening and variations, this is for experts only and extremely time consuming and worst of all BORING!! |
The Opening |

Vocabulary: 1. Pawns: these are the little pieces in the front 2. Pieces: these are the bigger pieces behind the pawns!! 3. Development: moving the PIECES out from behind the pawns |
Try as best as you can to move a piece only once in the opening. You must try to get your pieces out into action as fast as possible! (Example: A piece is your Bishop,Knight,Rook or Queen) |
Control the center of the board; the squares d4,e4,d5 and e5 are vital spaces. They are useful for moving your minor pieces to other areas of the board |
Remember to castle(preferably King-side)! |

Follow along: 1.d4,d5 ........move a pawn out of the way in order to start getting the pieces out. 2. Nf3,c6 .....white has got a piece out, GOOD job 3. e3,Nf6 .....now Black has a piece out 4. Bd3,e6 .....now whit has 2 pieces out 5. 0-0,Be7 ....castleing counts as development so the score is 3 to 2 6. Nd2,0-0 .... white has another piece out as Black castles and the score is 4 to 3 (See the diagram) |
This is a good system for opening. Do not move another pawn until you have a score of 4 (4 pieces out from behind the pawns). Now it is ok for white to follow up with a pawn move like 7.c3 or 7.b3 (to help more pieces to come out into the battle). By no means should you begin making pawn move after pawn move. Development of the chess pieces is paramount !! If you are a beginner this is the best way to start. Good Luck. Remember .....DEVELOPE !!! |
