CIA agents Richard Fectau and John Downey were captured and held in China until 1972/73. Some sources place this incident as happening a year later.

20 April 1978 A Korean Air Lines Boeing 707 flew over Murmansk while on a Anchorage-Paris flight. It was fired on by Soviet PVO Su-15 interceptors and crash-landed on a frozen lake.

6 September 1983 A Korean Air Lines Boeing 747, was shot down over Sakhalin by a Soviet PVO Su-15. All 269 on board were killed.

5 October 1986 A Corporate Air Services C-123 dropping supplies to the Contras in Nicaragua is shot down by a Sandinista soldier, using a SA-7. CIA pilots Wallace "Buzz" Sawyer and William Cooper are killed in the crash. Loadmaster Eugene Hasenfus parachutes to safety and is taken prisoner. He was later released in December 1986.

24 April 1992 Peruvian Su-22s attacked an USAF C-130. One crewmember was killed, four wounded.

17 December 1994 A US Army OH-58A (71-20796) was shot down over North Korea. One crew member was killed and the other was taken captive and later released.

24 February 1996 Two (civilian) US-registered Cessna 337 twin-engined aircraft, operated by Cuban exiles, were shot down by Cuban MiG-29s over the Florida Straits.
