Well, it's about time, isn't it? A few months after Sony announces their Playstation 2, Nintendo announces to the whole gaming community that they are currently working on their new console, code-named Dolphin. As far as specs go, we've heard it all, and it's pretty damned impressive, to say the least. But can Nintendo attract some the gamers they have lost to the Sony Playstation? My guess is yes. Still, as pro-Nintendo as I am, its just a gaming fact that Nintendo did back out of plans with Sony to make the "Super NES Playstation." As we all know, this is one of the major causes for the Sony Playstation, as well as the rivalry that came with it. Yes, its very true, Nintendo did reap what they have sown, and it seems as though Nintendo has learned from their mistakes. But, history has a way of repeating itself and in my opinion, their rival may just be on the same track.

I recently learned that during sometime at E3, Dolphin was shown behind closed doors. Many of my buddies claim that the announcement was made because they are trying to seem better than Sony, or that the announcement was some meager attempt to get some of the spotlight back. Some even say that the announcement was a falsification, and they aren't even in the works on their new system yet. Sure, I guess it could all be some humongous sham and Nintendo doesn't want to seem like they are losing precious ground, I mean anything is possible. And Zelda 64 sucked too, right? C'mon! Even PSX owners love that game! But seriously, think about it. How could Nintendo just sit back on their laurels and do nothing after that huge announcement? How can they even be accused of not trying to outdo their competition? It just seems odd to me that so many avid PSX gamers are so pro-Sony, that they are forgetting the past.

You can say what you want, but in my opinion, Nintendo is going to win back spot #1 and I say this with such utter confidence for two reasons: one, Nintendo is obviously smarter, making a deal with International Business machines (IBM) to produce their chip, especially since they have been doing it for over a year now, and are completely capable of pulling off producing such large quantities of 0.18 micron chips, unlike Sony, whose choice was to develop a whole new 0.18 micron chip, give it a fancy name, and marketing it as a brand new technology. On top of all that, they are using a company that has never done such a thing. That can't help Sony. Secondly, all specs aside, in the long run, giving the people what they want, software-wise is what it is going to come down to. And Sony will have some great titles, but with developers like Rare and creators like The Legendary Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo cannot lose! (Imagine Zelda in the glory of 128 bits! Oh yeah!)

Sadly, Sony is on top at this very moment, and many seem to feel as though nothing can stop them. But because Nintendo, with upwards of 15 years of home console experience, great developers and creators, millions of completely loyal fans, and a reputation of (almost) always being on top, there is reason to believe that they aren't far behind. In my opinion, the Dolphin announcement shows that Nintendo has more than one trick up their sleeves. I am a believer, and I for one are going to watch with bated breath and impatient eyes. Playstation, meet your doom!
