NO HARDWARE MODEMS ALLOWED!
1. The first thing you do to increase your modem speed is to go into Start, Settings, Control Panel, then Modems. Then click your modem then click Properties. Click the Tab connection and click the option Port Settings. There you should have the FIFO buffers enabled and are turned down to the LOWEST. (If you own a V.90 Modem connected at V.90 speeds, you may want to try to decrease your FIFO buffers and if it causes you to Lag more you should restore the Default) It may say that higher FIFO buffers are faster but its not good for Quake. The Lowest settings WILL BE better for Quake. Click OK then goto Advanced and make sure the Use Error Control Box is checked, and that Compress Data is checked.
2. ALWAYS use Dial-Up Networking to connect to the internet. Right click the Dial-Up Networking connection you use and go down to properties. Click the tab Server Types then where it says Advanced Options make sure that Log on to Network and Enable Software compression is checked. Then where it says Allowed network protocols make sure all is checked. Where it says TCP/IP Settings click it and at the bottom of that page make sure both boxes are connected. Click OK and OK again to get out of there.
3. After step Two is complete download this program called TweakDUN and install it and make sure to read the readme and make sure to backup your registries (backup instructions in readme). Once you installed the program and the registries are backed open TweakDUN.EXE while your STILL ONLINE! Select the Dial-Up adapter and it'll bring you to the Tweak screen. Select all options that say recommended and click OK and restart your computer.
4. Connect to the Internet and join a game in QuakeWorld.
