Russo Who?

I'm a wrestling fan.  I've been a fan since before Wrestlemania 2, which was a real long time ago.  My earliest memory was of King Kong Bundy body slaming Hulk Hogan multiple times until Hogan had to go to the hospital.  It was glorious.

Anyway, wrestling has changed over the years and in my opinion it's been for the better.  I can finally see matchs on normal television that aren't jobber matches.  Back ten years ago, the only wrestling on normal TV were the stupid matches between a good wrestler and a jobber.  A fan had to pay $20 for the PPV to see anything.  It sucked.  Now we can actually see something worth while without having to pay for it.

The personalities are better.  It has gone beyond the simplistic babyface vs. heel feuds that we used to have.  Stone Cold helped created the Tweener concept, wrestlers who didn't fall neatly into the categories of good and bad.  Some, like Chyna at the moment, may be booed one moment, like when she's with HHH, or cheered the next, when she's fighting JJ.

This page is going to be dedicated to my opinions on wrestling.  I am not going to review Smackdown, Nitro, or RAW for you.  I don't see them on the day those shows air anyway.  But I am going to give my opinions on the overall trends in wrestling, especially went a hot behind the scenes story hits.

Let's start with the current "BIG" story, which is Vince Russo going to WCW.

My opinion is, so what?

I'm sorry, Vince Russo did not make the WWF what it is today.  Yeah, he helped.  He came up with some good storylines, but much of what it is today is due to Steve Austin and Vince McMahon.  And lets be honest here, Russo wrote quite a few crappy storylines as well.  Dumb stuff like Pepper and having 80 year old women wrestle.  Yeah he pushed the envelope, but he's not going to be able to do that in the WCW.  They got in trouble for having Lodi and Lenny be ambigiously gay.  How does that compare to Golddust who was a raging homosexual for a while?  It doesn't.  Turner and WCW are very conservative.  So Russo's primary method of writing, exploitism, may not be allowed.  And Russo may not prove to be able to write strong material that doesn't depend on shocking the audience.

Besides, the majority of the fans aren't going to notice that Russo is gone.  Many probably don't even know who he is.

If Stone Cold or the Rock was to switch to WCW, or Sting to WWF, then there would be a real story.  But the writer?  Big deal, wrestling isn't a business that is based upon the writer.  It's not literature.  It's success is based upon the men in the ring.  And right now the most popular wrestlers are in the WWF.
