J.K. Rowling
Tolerated
"I've read some of it... I find it very flattering that people love the characters that much."
J.K. Rowling has spun such a fine tale of magic and wonder in our minds with her Harry Potter series that we cannot help but question implied events, retell things from another character's point of view, or even create an entirely different story with the settings she has provided. I'm glad someone as inspiring as her has permitted people to show how they have been inspired. We love you Rowling, keep writing.

NOT TOLERATED
"I do not allow fan fiction.

The characters are copyrighted. It upsets me terribly to even think about fan fiction with my characters. I advise my readers to write your own original stories with your own characters.

It is absolutely essential that you respect my wishes."
My answer: We understand that your characters are copyrighted, we don't claim otherwise. Why does fanfiction with your characters upset you? Many of us do write original work with original characters, I do.

Anne, I am, frankly, rather upset at your quite childish behavior in regards to fanfiction authors. You have the right to request that we desist, and the honorable among us would, if you asked. However, harassing fanfiction authors over so trivial (and it is trivial) a matter is quite unbecoming of someone who, from my impressions of your writing, seems rather intelligent. Ma'am, your actions towards my betheren offend me greatly, and I'll tell you this: I read fanfiction with your characters. Romance, drama, crossovers, I read it. No, I am not going to give you the link, I want to see these people keep writing. They do you no harm, and they buy your books. I have read The Vampire Chronicles and was planning to buy my own copies so I could pour over them monthly, because everytime I read them my mind would come up with 'what if this happened?', and would fill in the implied scenes, and I would have wonderful mental fanfiction running around in my brain. I have decided, however, after your actions, that I am boycotting your work. You will receive no money from this young writer, and, should I ever publish my own original work, be rest assured I shall include in the dedication: "To all those on the web whose Vampire Chronicle fanfiction inspired me." Good day.
