LAST

Syntax: last <character

This command will display the date and time at which a player was last

seen online.

LAVA

Syntax: cast lava

This spell will conjure forth a pool of boiling lava that will sear and char

all target characters within the room. Thereafter, anyone remaining in the

room will continue to take damage until they leave, or the lava cools.

LEAD LEADERSHIP

Syntax: lead

The LEADERSHIP skill enables you to inspire the members of a group, giving

them all bonuses in combat. The effects of your inspirational leadership

will not remain in force on people who leave your group.

The INSPIRE skill enhances the effect of the LEADERSHIP skill. It will allow

use of the LEADERSHIP skill where this is not already the case.

LEARNING

LEARNING is how you acquire mastery of a skill. Once you've developed

proficiency in a skill through PRACTICE, whenever it is used thereafter,

there is a small chance that your rating in it will increase. Because

we learn from our mistakes, most of your learning will coincide with your

most spectacular failures. The chance of you learning in a skill is

influenced by a number of factors, the most important of which are:

- Your intelligence score. Clever people learn more quickly.

- Your race. Long-lived races learn more slowly than short-lived ones.

- Your rating with any prerequisite skill. You cannot exceed your rating

with a prerequisite skill through learning.

'LEGEND LORE'

Syntax: lore <object

The LEGEND LORE skill enables you to recall scraps of information about an item

from songs, stories, and legends. The item itself need not necessarily be in

your possession. When used successfully, the skill provides general

information about what the item does and where it can be found.

'LEND HEALTH'

Syntax: cast 'lend health' <character

A sorcerer can LEND HEALTH to a companion in need, but only at his or her own

expense. That's what friends are for, right?

'LEPERS BLOOD'

See POISONS.

LEVEL

Syntax: level

LEVEL shows you how far you have to go until your next experience level.

LEVITATION

Syntax: cast levitation <character

These spells enable the target character to fly or levitate.

LIFESPAN

As you grow older, you may find that your ability scores begin to be affected.

Different races age at different rates. Elves, for example, are virtually

immortal. By contrast, orcs age quite rapidly. Different racial lifespans

are compensated for by the fact that longer-lived races learn more slowly

than shorter-lived ones; see LEARNING.

There are ways within the game that you can reduce your age, and you may need

to pursue these if your character starts getting on in life. In game terms,

the effects of age upon your maximum characteristic scores are as follows.

Age Bracket Str Int Wis Dex Con

Young - - - - +1

Prime - - - - -

Mature - - - - -1

Mid Life -1 - +1 - -2

Aging -2 - +2 -1 -4

Elderly -4 - +3 -2 -6

Ancient -7 -1 +2 -3 -8

Decrepit -10 -3 +1 -5 -10

LIGHTBANE

Syntax: cast lightbane

This spell will engulf the room in a cloud of impenetrable magical darkness.

Only characters with INFRAVISION will be able to see normally while the spell

persists.

'LIGHTNING BOLT'

Syntax: cast 'lightning bolt' <character

These spells inflict damage on the victim. The higher-level spells do

more damage.

LIST

Syntax: list <object | all <shopkeeper

LIST tells you the objects the shop keeper will sell you. When used with no

arguments or the word "all", it will list all objects the shopkeeper sells.

If you specify the name of an object, only objects matching that name will

be shown.

BUY, LIST, SELL, and VALUE, as well as most other object manipulation commands,

allow the use of #.object format, where # is a number or the word "all". For

example, if "list" showed you that a shopkeeper had five daggers, and you were

interested in buying the third one, you would type: "buy 3.dagger".

In most cases you do not need to specify which shopkeeper you wish to

deal with. However, you may need to do so if there is more than one present

in the same room.

LOAD

Syntax: load <missile

The LOAD command prepares a missile weapon for use. You must be wielding

the missile weapon to be loaded, and need only specify the missile you wish

to use. The missile must be in your inventory.

'LOCATE OBJECT'

Syntax: cast 'locate object' <name

This spell reveals the location of all objects with the given name.

LOCK

Syntax: lock <object|direction

LOCK and UNLOCK lock and unlock a closed object or door. You must have

the requisite key to LOCK or UNLOCK.

LOCKER

Syntax: locker open

Syntax: locker list

Syntax: locker put <object

Syntax: locker take <object

A bank is a place in which money and items may be safely stored. You can

transfer money from your person to your account using the DEPOSIT command,

and from your account to your person using the WITHDRAW command. In both

cases you must actually be at the bank. The ACCOUNT command shows you how

much money you currently have in your account, and can be used anywhere.

Lockers are used to safely store items. They are only accessible from within

a bank. You must use LOCKER OPEN before you may use a locker, and this will

cost you 10,000 gold pieces. The capacity of your locker will increase as

you advance in level. LOCKER LIST will show you what is currently in the

locker, and LOCKER PUT and LOCKER TAKE can be used to transfer items back and

forth between your locker and inventory.

LOOK

Syntax: look

Syntax: look <object

Syntax: look <character

Syntax: look <direction

Syntax: look <keyword

Syntax: look in <container

Syntax: look in <corpse

LOOK looks at something and sees what you can see. LOOK by itself will

give the description of the room you are in. See also BRIEF.

EXAMINE is short for 'LOOK container' followed by 'LOOK IN container'.

READ is the same as LOOK, but it sounds better to 'READ sign' than to

'LOOK sign', doesn't it?

LOOKPAGER

Syntax: lookpager

LOOKPAGER is a configuration option that activates or disables the pager when

you are looking at other characters. Ordinarily most people prefer not to

have the pager interrupt the output, but it can be useful sometimes if you

want to closely study someone with a long description and/or a lot of items.

See CONFIGURE to see whether your LOOKPAGER toggle is currently on or off.

LORE

Syntax: lore <object

The LEGEND LORE skill enables you to recall scraps of information about an item

from songs, stories, and legends. The item itself need not necessarily be in

your possession. When used successfully, the skill provides general

information about what the item does and where it can be found.
