The people in this SIG are just a group of ordinary Mensans with a mutual interest, the game of Diplomacy. I’m going to assume you know all about the game, and that you’ve had enough contact with Mensa to laugh when you read the above phrase "ordinary Mensans". It’s an oxymoron if I ever heard one. What we do is organize ways to play a favorite game. You’ve probably found out that Diplomacy is a hard game to play in the average life. Maybe in college environments or high school (that’s where I started) you can get together 7 people who have 3 or 4 hours to spare and know how to play. After college it can be tough. So, we play by mail, and now, electronic mail. Even with mail dropping the geographic barriers, how do you find 7 interested players? (Plus 1 to gamemaster for mail play.) That is the main goal of the Mensa SIG. A place to bring players together. What we also get is a forum to exchange opinions, a place to publish our views on the various aspects of play, the occasional hot dispute, and a feeling of camaraderie that there are others out there just as… hmmm…. "Unique" as we are in enjoying this activity. We have a secondary activity, spreading the word. This is something I have an interest in, but not something that is very active within the hobby at this time. In order to keep from fading away, we need to work for new players. This is not a game people discover accidentally. It is not prominently displayed in every toy store. It can be "discovered" in the right places, but usually it has to be introduced. We need to keep making those introductions. And every SIG member is one more emissary to the world for this fascinatingly variable game. |
