The party exits the mist to find themselves in a vast, scorching desert. A thin mountain chain can be seen in the far, far distance on all sides, as well as an ominous black structure. This structure is unrealistically large, black and sleak, not a sharp corner to be found on its smooth, curving surface. The party approaches a ten-foot-tall door to have it kicked down onto them, a golem on the other side. The golem thrashed the adventurers like they were toys until one of them simply asked if they could enter the building. The golem appeared to be disappointed, and stepped aside. One player insulted the golem as they passed, restarting the battle. After some more pain, the party defeated the golem and continued.
They found themselves in a large room, a statue in the middle. The statue is of a vaguely humanoid figure, legs together, standing straight and looking up with its arms outstretched. It is constructed of smooth, polished dark gray stone that rainbows when a light source touches it. Around these statues, there are doors lying on the ground as though they were tossed there. These doors are unmovable, however, and the party discovers that when opened, they lead to odd places.
The party opens a simple wooden door to find a corridor that stretches 20 feet straight down, ending in a fragile wooden door with an iron handle. When the group enters this pit, gravity shifts and they are standing upright in the corridor. Smashing the door, the party finds itself in a small room whose walls and floor resemble a cellar. There are slender mirrors flush with the wall in each of the four corners of the room, and in the middle there is a chair with horrible implements of torture at the end of wirey, mechanical arms.
One human looks into a mirror and sees himself as an aged man. This man mimics his movements, but in a feeble manner. The other human looks in another mirror to see himself as a skeleton. The tauren looks into another mirror and sees himself bloody and deathly wounded. Finally, the elf looks into a mirror and, in stead of seeing her reflection, sees herself sitting in the chair. No mirror shows anyone but the one standing before it in the reflection.
The first human looks in the tauren's mirror and sees himself as he should be, but sees a bloody tauren standing behind him, reaching out for his shoulder, blood dripping onto the human. He whirls around and sees nothing. This same human looks into the elf's mirror and sees himself in an executioner's mask. Finally, this same human looks in the other human's mirror and sees himself holding a torch. The tauren attempts to attack the chair but, as he winds up, he discovers that he likes the chair very much, and is surprised that he would ever even think of harming it.
Disturbed, the group attempts to leave this room only to discover that the corridor now leads to another, similar room. The room lights itself as they approach it, revealing a small throne. The walls are lined with cages and jail cells with no doors. Behind these cells are skeletons and men so skinny they may as well be skeletons, all of which writhe slowly and silently on the ground behind the bars.
The first human slashes at the bars and bends one back. He reaches into the cell. One of the men grabs his hand and whispers, almost inaudibly, "what have you done?" The human attempts to lift the man out of the cell, and accidentally breaks off his arm. The second human makes a comment that displeases the first. The first human pushes the second into the throne. The second human is now seated in the throne. The first human feels anger upon seeing this. The second human feels as though he has broken a sacred rule by sitting down on the throne. The tauren is fearful that someone has seated themselves on the throne, and feels as though it is his duty to punish the man.
A fight breaks out. As the fight continues, each adventurer learns more about the feelings they are experiencing. The first human is angered that someone had sat in his throne, the second human knows that he did something wrong by sitting in the throne, but he somehow knew that he had always wanted to do just that, the tauren knows that he must ensure that only the first human sits in the throne, and is fearful that the first human will be angry with him for not preventing this from happening. Finally, as the elf watches this group fight amongst themselves, she feels hopeful.
The first human kills the second human. The elf kills the first human. The elf now feels that she is free, the tauren is at first shocked that the first human is dead, but then realizes that with him dead, he can do whatever he wants. He moves to attack the elf, but the elf kills the tauren before he can do so. The elf is now free, a white light blinds her, and the group finds themselves alive again, in the right frame of mind, in the statue room. The ordinary wooden door snaps shut.
Every member of the party now knows what this was all about. The first human was the lord of this castle, the elf was his wife. The second human was his adviser, and the tauren his general and bodyguard. The lord's wife was cheating on the lord with the adviser, and attempted to assist the him in overthrowing the lord. The lord discovered their plot, imprisoned the wife and killed the adviser, burning him alive. While the general assisted him in killing the adviser, the lord killed the general too, because he did nothing to prevent this from happening.
The group opens another door, an ornate door covered with satin, studded with jewels. This door leads to a staircase that spirals down and, as soon as the entire group is descending it, the staircase turns into a slide ending in a lava pit. The group leaps over the lava pit, now finding themselves in a corridor ending in a "T." To the left, the party encounters a stone bridge that hangs over a deep chasm. Avoiding a trap that destroys the bridge, the party goes the other direction and finds a large stone door.
Behind this door is a room with a domed ceiling. Meaningless technological doodads line the walls. In the center there is a tall, wirey chair facing away from the entrance. On this chair there is a man in brown robes. The group nearly mistakens this man for a goblin, but he appears to be much more human in appearance. The man, calling himself Marmen, plays with a sphere as he answers the party's questions briefly, refusing to converse. When each party member enters the room, he manipulates the sphere to activate some sort of trap involving a poison. Once the trap inflicts the adventurer, he allows them to pass, calling this "his toll."
The group discovers that the lord of this castle is named, appropriately enough, Lord Grim, and resides at the top of the castle. Marmen refuses to assist or hinder the group in any way. When told to go to hell, he puts his sphere down and regards the speaker with a cocked eyebrow, looking upon the adventurers for the first time, and says simply, "you don't get it, do you? You're already there." With that, the party proceeds past Marmen, scaling a grand staircase bound for obstacles unknown.
