Kamakura

daibutsu

My trip to Kamakura was fun, if a bit short. John and I travelled to Hiratsuka together, shopped and had dinner, and met up with Kate. (I started my own colony of Ottawans in Japan. Mike and Neal will be next.) We hung out for a while, met Carolyn and all of their roommates, and then called it a night.

The next day, Kate, John and I went to Kamakura. We visited the Daibutsu, an enormous bronze statue of Buddha. The statue is about 8 metres tall, weighs about 120 tons, and is hollow. We lined up, and went inside. Unfortunately, the descriptive signage was only written in Japanese. After a brief walk around the grounds, we then wandered over to the souvenier stands, and then left. Our next stop was at Hase-Dera temple. This temple is dedicated to "lost children", those who were stillborn, miscarried or aborted. The temple was gorgeous, and one of the buildings houses the largest wooden statue of Kannon in Japan. After this, we headed back to Hiratsuka, and I went home after a quick dinner.

Some of my pictures from this trip are now posted... Check here to have a look!
