Lucy
2002-2004

Lucy was one of two hamsters that my sister bought in July of 2002, the other being Ethel. She was the biter whereas Ethel was the sweet one. On weekends, my sister would come home (she goes to college in another city) to go to work and I would babysit her hamsters. Eventually, she got a new job in her city, and so I rarely got to see the hamsters anymore. Because of this, my sister bought me my own hamsters, Pixie and Dixie, who had pretty much the same personalities as Lucy and Ethel, only they were far less outgoing at first. Overtime, we and several of my sister's friends ended up getting more hamsters, and it was all because of Lucy and Ethel. Around March of 2003, Lucy became jealous of the attention that Ethel was given and began attacking her. Dixie had been killed by Pixie in the previous month and my sister was not about to let history repeat itself. She had no choice but to separate her two hamsters, who once loved each other, into two different cages. However, Lucy and Ethel still got to play outside of their cages every once in a while. Lucy was quite a unique case--as mean as she was at first, she saw the love that my sister gave her and began returning the love to everyone she encountered. Before long, Lucy was as sweet as Ethel, and now that she had her own cage, she no longer had a reason to be protective of her territory. On March 18, 2004, Lucy got to say goodbye to her sister Ethel just before she was put to sleep due to a tumor infection. Lucy lived for another five months in a healthy and happy state considering her age. On August 26, 2004, Lucy died in her sleep. She was burried in our backyard next to Ethel the next day. May she rest in peace. 1
