Mammoth Caves: "The Frozen Niagara Tour" from Summer 2000 |
On one of our trips we decided to stop and visit Mammoth Caves in Kentucky. We had fun camping out at the nice site they provided, and look back with fondness to the short one day stay we had there. There were lots of tours to choose from, but we wanted the one with all the best formations,so we chose "The Frozen Niagara Tour". It was quite a bit of walking but well worth the visit. |

This is looking straight up at a ceiling in the caves. There was no belly crawling on this tour. |
The section of cave that we toured was nice and open. This is another high ceiling. |
What a cool pose for such a good looking guy. Notice how well the shirt and jacket match. ha ha |
Tites go down, Mites go up..I think. This is a neat wall face we saw. |
I believe this was produced by shining lights. It looks like gold. |
This is looking down into a cave chasm over the guard railed walkway. |
This formation and others is why the tour was named "Frozen Niagra". Kinda looks like it. |
Me at 250ft. below the ground. This is where the group stopped for a lecture. |
Big old stalagmite. I wish I could put that in my living room. |
Mites and Tites caught in the same picture. |
Just a picture of the sign at the bottom of our tour. First you descend lots of stairs to get here, then you climb back up a bunch of ramps to go back. |
This is looking down at a whole wall of Stalagtites. The air was musty and our visibility relied solely on the lights run by generators in the cave. |
This is a great picture of the cave ceiling that we stood under as we progressed through the tour. |
Caves can provide an elaborate mess of formation, like this. |

Some wet formations. We weren't aloud to touch anything in the cave because of the erosive oils on our skin. |
