Title Tips Tactics Tricks Traps Top Times

Mario Raceway - Tactics

Mario Kart 64 tactics differ greatly from Mario Kart tactics. The karts don't handle too much differently, but the addition of "max packs" of items, a "Super Mushroom", a "spiny shell", two more human opponents, and computer opponents that have secretly added turbo boosters to their karts and cheat massively to keep up with the leader cause most Mario Kart tactics to fail. Be sure to check which game each tactic is for.

Mario Kart Tactics

Losing Red Shells

In general, losing red shells locked on you is done easier in closed-in areas, so these tactics work better in the Battle mode than in the GP or Versus modes.

Losing the Lock

A red shell will temporarily lose its lock when your kart hops (by using the 'R' button), then regain a lock when you hit the ground. A well-timed power slide will cause the shell to lose lock, then regain the lock as it is passing you, causing it to do circles around you! This is best done near a wall so you can direct the shell into the wall.

Mario Kart 64 Tactics

Losing Red Shells

Red shells have been upgraded in this game. They first fire straight ahead, then sharply head off in the direction of the intended target. The power slide technique does NOT work well in Mario Kart 64.

Blocking Techniques

Shell shields give you protection against many forms of attacks and traps. But what if you have a banana peel, a banana bunch, a single shell, or a fake block? You can still use these items to block a single shell attack. Hold the 'R' button down to drag the item behind you.

This is great for Red/Green shell attacks from the rear. But the upgrade to the red shells now allows players to fire red shells and hit you, even when you are the one chasing them! You can still block the shell! With your item at the ready, brake, then, still holding the brake, push back on the stick. This causes the kart to back up. It also brings your item in front of you, effectively blocking any attack from the front! Be careful if you are using a banana bunch for blocking, as the bananas will be knocked randomly onto the track around you when hit.
