In fact, the R can be split into up to three fully functional independent craft - the R's primary hull, warp pod and bridge module. It should be noted, however, that the bridge is limited to sublight speeds, and its separation sequence is a one-way, one-time only emergency ejection. Its modular design allows the swapout of any major system and/or component, even the entire bridge. The Roddenberry's weapons, shields, and life support are quadruple- redundant in all aspects and use gravitic battery cells, recharged by the ship's ambient shielding deflector fields, as an auxiliary power source even when EPS feeds are disabled. Since the Roddenberry cannot separate (considered a design flaw) it has the most efficent matter/anti-matter core ejection assembly in the fleet, which is capable of fully jettisoning a hot core in less than three seconds. While being almost 33% larger volume than the Galaxy Class starship, the Armstrong Class is able to maintain high maneouverability by only having a slightly larger crew (the R does not carry families) and facilities, with the additional volume accounted for in electronic components, multiple redundant systems and fighter squadron bays. Unfortunately, the impulse systems exhibit slight inefficiencies due to the energies needed to maintain a rather strong mass-reducing subspace field sufficient to propel the ship's tremendous mass at acceptable velocities. The WPS incorporates an innovative quad-faceted dilithium control matter/ antimatter annihilation assembly, which gives the Armstrong Class up to 6 times the power over the Galaxy Class while using half the fuel. The warp core features four matter and antimatter feed tubes. The ship's computer is larger than that of most starbases in storage capacity and processing power. Using positronic waveguides and bio-neural circuitry, it is capable of receiving input via voice or console access - and directly from the minds of telepaths. The latter form of input is quite experimental and dangerous and is not recommended because of how taxing it is on the brain. This bizarre finding seems to be a unplanned side effect caused by the extensive bio-neural components within the computer core. In addition, the R employs a highly sophisticated quadruple-redundant warp core ejection system. Other unique features include a Dark Running Mode, where the ship operates at minute power signature, rendering it harder to see by Threat forces. Another recent feature are gravitic-based shielding, which use gravitions and vertitrons to convert up to 12% of incoming enemy fire to useable energy. As an extension to its defence platform philosophy, the R has ten torpedo tubes (two facing in each of the ships cardinal directions, the remaining two are mounted vertically). All phasers have been modified to emit pulse firing patterns similar to phaser cannons. These advantages give the starship simultaneous omnidirectional weapons strafing. In conclusion, the USS Roddenberry has been one of Starfleet R&D's most creative - as well as costly - starship projects. No further ships are planned. It was designed for short-term assignments, with most of its power routed toward propulsion and weapon systems. The Avatar is suited for espionage/commando missions, emergency high-speed transport and atmospheric entry. The Sulu Class is Starfleet Defence's second attempt at short-range space superiority fighter design; the first project, the Nacheyev Class of 2368, failed spectacularily. The Dark Stalkers have a Type 7-esque fuselage with runabout impulse engines and are warp incapable. Exhaust output is vectored and pushed out through winglike extensions. The Dark Stalkers are launched from accelerator bays which can be specially- fitted into starships and starbases. The Sulu Class is meant exclusively for combat or clandestine operations within 500,000 kilometres of ship or starbase. When sporting antimatter canisters, they can even be used as large flying torpedoes, this is generally a last resort because of the tremendous expense. Dark Stalkers can also be fitted with phase distorters to aid in Threat force shield penetration. Other features include faster-than-light (FTL) sensors, twin-vectored exhaust directors giving the Sulu Class superb agility (they can turn on an area no larger than their length at attack speed), a triple interlocking structural integrity field (SIF) and a special subspace wrap design to protect the pilot in extreme banking maneuvers and to confuse enemy sensors as to mass and position. Sulu Class fighters are currently in the test phase and have been implemented by selected ships and facilities, namely the USS Roddenberry, the USS Aurora, and Starbase 90, the main distribution site.
