Why a Cat - everyone has an opinion

I've read and heard many debates on this topic, and just have to add my own opinions on this topic. These are just based on my experiences of sailing a cat, and my family's everyday comments about living and sailing on a cat.

They're honest reactions based on the sailing we have done so you may want to look at our log to see what it includes. Real quickly, it's been mostly coastal cruising in Florida and the Caribbean, with one Gulf Stream crossing to date.

Living space while sailing

In my mind, the best reason for sailing a cat.

Living space while at anchor

OK, maybe THIS is the best reason !

Speed

Whoaaa, and what speed.

Level Sailing

In light winds and in not so light winds.

Capsize ?

Never been close, but some have, and it makes for interesting reading.

360 degree view

In good or bad weather, it has served us well.

Tacking

Nothing comes for free, but there are ways to work with it.

Slamming

A possible concern, unless you know how to sail your boat

Manoeuvering under power

With two diesels, the only way to go.

Some of the boats we have sailed include :

  • Fontaine Pajot Louisianne 37'
    (both 1986 and 1992 models)
  • Kennex 38'
  • Lagoon 37'

Our reviews and links to the manufacturers web pages are here in the Boat Gallery.
