The Coronado Bay Bridge was completed in 1969; this five-lane bridge spans 2 miles across the bay, linking San Diego and Coronado. When it opened, it put the commuter ferries out of business, although in 1986 passenger ferry service restarted. Crossing the bridge by car or bus is a thrill because you can see Mexico, the San Diego skyline, Coronado, the naval station, and San Diego Bay. The bridge's middle section floats, so that if it's destroyed in wartime, naval ships will still have access to the harbor and sea beyond. (Source: Frommers) www.coronadohistory.org |
