Welcome to the History
Page of Initially, we will explore the history of the Maasai from their contact with Europeans in the 1850's onward - the commencement of alienation of Maasai land at the turn of twentieth the century - the ignoring of the Maasai in mid-century - and the realisation by the post-colonial regimes of the importance of Masai land, and its appropriation by these neo-colonialist regimes of supposedly independent nationalist governments. Presented here are copies of neo-colonialist documentation which, in the neo-colonialist and post-colonialist view legitimise the theft of Maasai land and its turning over to agriculturalists and thence to multi-national agricultural concerns. In addition, there are copies of early twentieth century monographs from Germany and Great Britain, which discuss historical, cultural and societal aspects of Maasai life and experience at the time of initial impact with European colonial powers.
