More info about Slovak phonecards

 

Slovak Republic with approximately 5,3 million inhabitants is young country in the heart of Europe. It has come to existence on 1st January 1993, similarly as the Czech Republic, by peaceful separation of the former Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. Different from the Czech Republic where the foundation of public cardphones and thus also phonecards, were laid in the time of the former CSFR (in 1991), history of public cardphones and also phonecards in the Slovak Republic is shorter and started almost with the beginning of the independent Slovak Republic.

First cardphones were instaled in Bratislava by French firm Schlumberger in January 1993. First card was issued in January 1993 with picture „Bratislava at night“.

Since the introduction of phonecards, it was possible buy phonecards at the rate 1 call unit for 1,- Sk - it was from January to 31st March 1993, since 1st April 1993 1 call unit cost 2,- Sk.

From spring 1995 was cardphones Schlumberger changed for GPT cardphones. In October 1995 all Schlumbergers phonecards expired and were changed for new GPT cards by Slovak Telecommunications. Since December 1995 can be used in cardphones phonecards manufactured by: GPT Great Britain, ODS Germany, Gemplus France, INCARD Italy and Solaic.

Public cards are issued in quantity 10 000 - 200 000 pcs, private and commemoratives in quantity 500 - 10 000 pcs.
