Customer Order Logistics Transaction Systems
- Oracle Rdb, 120 user database taking all orders for Monsanto
business division. Approximately $2bn yearly, involved in security,
performance tuning, IEF troubleshooting, backups/restores, table
and index scripts, resource planning.
Sql/Services and Rdb software - responsible for Sql/Services installations, troubleshooting and configuration. Responsible for Rdb and related software installs, primary system troubleshooter, rewrote Rdb backup tool to use Storage Library System, reduced night calls by 80%.
EndUser Database - Oracle
Rdb, 40 client/servers users (VB/Win95/TCPIP), maintaining call-center
and direct marketing data on US soybean and corn farmers. Chief
challenges revolved around data volume and volatility, rapid turnaround
on new marketing programs, integration with existing business
systems, and performance related to remote call centers connected
using ODBC over T1 lines.
Infopump - Platinum's
heterogeneous data replication tool running on Windows NT servers.
Used to connect AS/400 DB2 databases, Dbase, Lotus Notes, Rdb,
Oracle, Informix, flat files. Responsible for introducing the
technology to Monsanto, providing design and coding assistance
on scripts, ensuring production quality availability of NT servers
and application software. Microsoft Sql/Server backend. Approximately
120 scripts executed nightly, 200 weekly.
Metadata warehouse- responsible
for creating and populating metadata repository covering Rdb (45+)
and Oracle databases (85+) at Monsanto. Used by data administrators
to audit logical design compliance, provide database historical
resource (IO, storage, attach) analysis, auditing of table usage,
what-if scenarios. Write reports to quantitatively monitor and
report on database performance and resource usage.
Crop Data Warehouse -
Oracle 7.1, 20 online users, 16gig, OpenVMS. Reloaded largely
from scratch nightly, summarization (fact and dimension tables)
provided by PL/SQL scripts. Chief challenges are ensuring access
to data by non-Oracle groups, ensuring consistently fast overnight
load cycle, ensuring VMS system used to best effect, space management,
Oracle education to teams. Use SQL*LOADER, export/import, ULTBSTAT,
UTLESTAT, many home-grown utilities.
