molly "Fuck you!" I screamed at my assailant. "Let me go you fucking ass hole!" With that I kicked my foot backwards, bringing it into sharp contact with his shin.
molly Shit!" said the man behind me as his hands dropped from my waist to rub his injured leg. "What the fuck is wrong with you?" There was something about that voice that made me turn around. My heart almost stopped when I saw the familiar face wearing a mixed expression of confusion and pain.
molly "Oh My God!" I exclaimed. Then, a little softer, "Rob, I'm so sorry. I thought you were Eric, and you just snuck up on me, and I was afraid that..." All of the emotion relating to my ex-boyfriend that had been building up ever since our breakup suddenly came pouring out. I could not stop the tears that flowed unbidden from my eyes. An expression of surprise and concern spread across Rob's face as he took me into his arms.
molly "Shhhhhhh," he whispered. "It'll be ok, really. Don't cry. Please?" I looked up into the gorgeous blue eyes and felt as though I could just stand there and stare into them forever, forgetting everything else. And for a few minutes, that's exactly what I did. Then, exhausted from the whole thing, I slumped heavily against Rob who didn't seem to mind at all. After a few minutes of standing like this, Rob bent down and rubbed his injury. I felt him wince as he did so, and when he stood up, bent down myself to look at the damage I had caused.
molly "Holy Shit! I did that?" Rob's leg was turning various shades of purple and blue, and was already starting to swell.
molly "Yeah, I guess you did." He said sighing. "That would make two times you've tried to hurt me." He smiled down at me where I was still kneeling in front of him on the ground. "Are you trying to tell me something?"
molly "They were all just accidents, that's all. I'm not trying to kill you, really." I smiled back and for a moment, our eyes locked again, and I melted inside. The fact that I now knew Rob personally did not alter the response he had always caused me to have towards him, even if it had only been through pictures and music before. Now, if anything, the response was stronger because of my closeness to him at that moment. My heart began to race and I decided that I had to say something.
molly "Can you walk ok?" I asked him, silently praying that he could because there was no way in hell that I was going to be able to carry Rob Thomas. "Let's go inside so I can get you some ice."
molly "Ok," he agreed with a nod. "But first I have to give you your present. Come on." Rob led me a little ways down the street to where his car was parked. I couldn't see it from the house, so I hadn't imagined that it wasn't there. As we walked, Rob put his arm around me "For support so I don't fall on my ass." he had quickly explained. I was now standing close enough to smell his CK1 cologne, and I quickly fell into a dazed state, still not believing any of this was happening. Rob was saying something to me, but the words seemed to be in another language.
molly "What?" I asked, snapping out of my trance-like state.
molly "I said you're really going to love this present that I got you."
repeated Rob. We finally arrived at the car, and Rob reached his hand into his pocket and removed his keys. Then he opened the trunk of the car and took out something, handing it to me. When I got a good look at what it was, I ran and gave Rob a huge hug.
molly "Thank you so much." I said. "I love it." He had given me a poster-sized picture of Kyle, Adam, Brian, Paul, and himself. On the back, each band member had signed his name and written a happy birthday message, all in different colors. They all looked better than I had ever seen them before. They obviously had gotten done up for the occasion. I resisted the urge to start crying again and instead gave Rob another hug. "This is so incredible.!" I exclaimed. "Everyone looks so gorgeous. I've never seen this picture before."
molly "I had the guys take it today just for you." He said with a smile.
molly "That is so sweet of you." I stared up into his face where I could see small traces of pain. His leg must have really been killing him. "Let's go get you that ice." I finally said. "You can lay down in my room if you want to, but we really have to go back now. After all, it is my party, and everyone's probably wondering where the hell I am." With that we started towards the house. I helped Rob, who was limping slightly.
molly "Are you sure you're ok?" I asked, my eyes trailing down to rest on his leg.
molly "Yeah, I'll be fine once I sit down."
molly We at last reached my house. The music was louder than it had before seemed. Briefly I wondered if I should turn it down so the neighbors wouldn't call the cops. I quickly changed my mind though. Our neighbors were really nice and I was sure they didn't mind.
molly "Brace yourself and prepare to be ambushed." I said, opening the door and allowing the sounds of laughter and Busted drift out into the still night air. "I'll try and sneak you into my room without anyone seeing, but I'm not making any promises."
molly "Kinky." Rob said in a sexy voice. "And then what happens?"
molly "You're sick, you know that?" I asked, playfully punching him in the shoulder.
molly "Thanks," he Said. "I try."
molly Rob and I entered the house and I motioned towards the stairs that led into my room. "Hurry!" I commanded. Rob went to the stairs as quickly as he could with me following right behind. We narrowly escaped Sadie's eyes. I was pretty sure that she caught a glimpse of the back of Rob's head, but she probably had had one too many drinks and thought nothing of it.
molly "This is really scary." Rob commented as he entered my room and his incredible blue eyes took in all of my Matchbox 20 pictures. "I don't like the idea of me watching myself."
molly "Yeah, but I like the idea that you're always watching me." I replied, plopping down on my bed beside Rob. He moved closer to me, his leg just barely touching mine, and I shivered. I knew that if I didn't get up and go downstairs right now I'd never be able to pull myself away from his captivating gaze. Jumping up maybe a little too quickly, I explained, "I'd better get you that ice." Not daring to look directly at Rob, I raced from the room and took the stairs three at a time. I was stopped by at least thirty people, with various comments about how great the party was going. I found Sadie dancing in the living room, looking like she was having a great time. Stopping to talk with her for a few minutes, I told her how surprised I was about the turn out of the party. Before moving towards the kitchen, I added that I had to talk to her later.
molly "Come on," she said to me. "Dance and have a good time. You deserve it. It's your birthday after all." She examined my face curiously. "You look happy. That's good." Her face lit up suddenly. "I almost forgot. I swear," she said excitedly. "I saw Rob before. That would totally rock, Rob at your birthday party. What more could a girl ask for? That is, except for Paul." I just gave her a big grin.
molly "Yeah."
molly Finally, I managed to make it into the kitchen and grab a towel, which I quickly filled with ice and put into a ziplock bag. Then I darted for the stairs, and collided with someone coming from the opposite direction.
molly "Shit!" the person shouted at me. "Watch where the fuck you're going." I ignored the drunk girl, only one thing on my mind.
molly "I'm back. " I called softly into the room. There was no reply. I stepped inside and carefully closed the door behind myself and glanced at the bed. Rob was tucked under the covers, his head tipped slightly towards the door as if he had fallen asleep waiting for me to come back. "Yeah right." I mumbled to myself. I knew that I was making a bigger deal out of this whole thing than it actually was. Why would Rob Thomas, who could get almost any girl he wanted, be interested in an average, city girl who is definitely no super model. I sighed longingly as I glanced at the still, sleeping form and wondered what he was dreaming about. He obviously doesn't have nightmares, I thought to myself.
molly Remembering the real reason I was up there, I rolled up the blanket at the foot of the bed and the left leg of Rob's pants. The bruise looked very painful. I touched it tenderly, then pressed the ice lightly onto it. Rob shivered and winced in his sleep, letting out a low groan of pain.
molly "I'm sorry." I whispered softly. I walked to my dresser and picked up my hair brush, combing out the tangles that had materialized over the past three or four hours. Then I shut off the light and left the room. Resisting the urge to crawl into bed next to him had been so hard that it almost hurt. As I walked back downstairs to join my party, I reviewed the day's events. This had been the best day of my life, and definitely a birthday that I would never forget.
molly After I had mingled for about two hours, had a couple of drinks, and some ice-cream cake, people finally started to leave. Sadie said good night and went to bed, obviously forgetting that I had wanted to talk to her. I didn't mind. There'd be plenty of time for that tomorrow, I told myself. Sadie had left me with the awful task of waking up the various people crashing on the floor and the furniture. I gave up the idea of finding a place to sleep downstairs and ran back up into my room. I grabbed a pillow and blanket from the hall closet and threw them down beside my bed. Then, I went to my closet and took out some pajamas. It was light enough in the room for me to see what I was doing, and I quickly got dressed, not bothering to change in the bathroom because it really didn't matter with Rob sleeping. On my way to go lay on the floor, my legs brushed the side of the bed, and I felt Rob's arm slip around my waist.
molly "You don't have to sleep on the hard floor." he murmured. "There's plenty of room up here." He pulled me onto the bed beside him and I snuggled against his warm body and fell asleep with his arm still tightly around me. It was the happiest I had been in a long time. However, the feeling of safe joy that filled me and warmed my entire body was soon replaced by one of panic and fear wen sleep crept over me, This time the nightmare was different.
molly Rob and I were walking down a deserted road talking. Rob had his head turned away from me so that I could not see his face clearly. Then, all of a sudden, he stopped walking and turned towards me. It wasn't the almost hypnotic blue gaze that I saw, but instead angry looking brown eyes.
molly "I told you that I would find you." the person who I had thought was Rob, really Eric, said to me. "And this time you're not going to get away."
molly I turned and ran, but it felt as though I was walking under water. The knarled branches of trees reached out to grab me while vines suddenly appeared across my path and attempted to trip me. Eric did not have to try very hard to catch up with me. In no time at all he was right behind me, his breath on my neck. I decided that the best thing that I could do would be to turn and fight, but when I turned around to face my ex, I caught the bright glint of a sharp metallic object in his right hand. A knife! "No! Please!" I begged him. "Please! I don't want to die. Rob!" I screamed, not knowing what else to do. "Rob, help me! Don't let him hurt me! Please! Nooooooooo!"
molly "Summer, Summer," Rob called shaking me. "Wake up." I opened my eyes, the awful images disappearing, and the first thing I saw was Rob's face. I started to cry, not really knowing the reason. "It's ok, it's over. Just a nightmare." He pulled me to him and I rested my head against his chest.
molly "I'm ok." I said, knowing this to be a lie. "I have nightmares all the time, it's just that I've never told anyone about them before. It's the worst fucking feeling in the world. I don't want to live my entire life in fear of something I can't even prove is there." I knew Rob had no idea what I was talking about, but he seemed to understand anyway.
molly "Just try and calm down a little and tell me what is going on with you." He rubbed my back and his eyes searched mine, burning right through to my brain and reading my deepest secrets, or so it seemed. In those questioning eyes there was so much concern that I couldn't help but tell him everything right from the beginning. I told him about Eric, our breakup, the threatening messages, my real point of moving to Orlando, and the fact that I was pretty sure that I had seen Eric last week. Then I explained about the nightmares and the reason I had flipped out on him that night. It felt good to share the burden of fear with someone who seemed to care so much.
molly "Where is he?" Rob asked a little angrily. "I'll kick his ass." I couldn't help butt giggle. I felt much better after opening myself up to Rob and now that the nightmare was over.
molly "BY the way," Rob quietly said. "You were really great last night. The best.. I bolted straight upright in bed.
molly "What the hell are you talking about?" I demanded, suddenly wondering if I had had more to drink than I originally thought. Rob chuckled, pulling me back down beside him.
molly "You're so fucking gullible." he teased, his deep voice vibrating in my ears. I smiled at him in the semi-darkness and moved closer.
molly "You're such an ass hole." I sat up again, feigning anger.
molly "I know." He returned, a flirtatious note coming into his voice as he too sat up. He then leaned close to me and I knew what was going to happen next. My heart began to race with anticipation as I closed my eyes, then thought better of it. I wanted to see his expression when I kissed him. His lips met mine and suddenly the room felt two hundred degrees too hot, but I didn't care. The only thought that crossed my mind was Wow!. Rob made a noise in his throat that assured me he felt the same way. The kiss seemed to last forever as Rob ran his hands up and down my back, stroking my hair. This sent shivers through my entire body. I put my arms around Rob's neck, pulling him even closer than before. I didn't want it to end, but I was running out of air. We both pulled away at the same time, and I collapsed onto my back, every muscle in my body becoming useless. The same sentence repeated itself over and over in my head: I just kissed Rob Thomas. It had been exactly what I had needed. The nightmare was long forgotten.
molly "Shit!" Rob finally said, breaking the silence that had settled over the two of us.
molly "Yeah." I agreed, knowing exactly how he felt. Rob laid back next to me and turned onto his side, giving a low groan of pain as he did so. Suddenly recalling his injured shin, I turned over to face him. "Are you ok?" I asked in a worried voice. "I totally forgot about your leg in the... uh... excitement of things."
molly "It's fine. Just hurts a little."
molly "Do you want some Aspirin or something?" I didn't want him to have to suffer and not get any sleep.
molly "Nah. I can take the pain. I don't want to make you get up and wake everyone else up." Thank God for that, I thought relieved. I didn't think that my legs would hold me up for very long.
molly "Hey Rob," I changed the subject abruptly, looking at my clock-radio. "look what time it is."
molly "It's 3 am. I must be lonely." Rob sang softly. I closed my eyes, totally relaxed and content, and soon fell into a deep, fitful sleep.***
molly The next morning, I awoke to the sun shining brightly in my eyes. I groaned and buried my head under the blanket. I didn't want to wake up yet. For once I had slept with no disturbing nightmares to haunt me. I stretched luxuriously and gave a small yawn. There's no chance I'm going back to sleep now, I finally concluded after ten minutes of fruitless trying. I crawled out from under Rob's arm. He gave a protesting moan which I ignored. I had to talk to Sadie before Rob got up. Making sure that Rob was still sleeping, I picked out an outfit, changed, and hurried down the stairs. Everyone except one person, some guy I didn't know, had already left, thank God. I went over to the guy and woke him up. He was pissed at me for doing so, but I didn't really care. I was walking on air, my problems forgotten for the moment. The mysterious guy went out the door mumbling incoherently to himself. I heaved a relieved sigh and headed down the hall to Sadie's bedroom door. After knocking several times and not getting an answer, I just barged in.
molly "Sadie!" I said excitedly. "Wake up. This is important." When there was no response from the lump under the covers, I proceeded to jump up and down on the mattress. Then I got an even better idea.
molly "Fine," I said walking towards the door. "I'll just tell Paul that you're too busy sleeping." At the mention of Paul Doucette, the short, spiky-haired drummer of Matchbox 20 and Sadie's equivalent to God, she sat up rubbing her eyes.
molly "Paul? Where?" she demanded. I couldn't help but laugh at her.
molly "I knew that'd wake you up. But really," I said, sitting down on the foot of the bed. "What I am about to tell you has a lot to do with Matchbox 20." I went on to inform her of yesterday's happenings. By the time I had finished, the shocked look on her face was priceless. I smiled, happy my words had had the desired effect. "And he's upstairs sleeping in my room as we speak." I concluded.
molly "Yeah Right." she said rolling her eyes. I could understand what she must be thinking. The whole thing sounded crazy even to me. "You expect me to believe that Rob Thomas spent the night in your bed? Prove it."
molly "Hey baby, how you feelin?" called a voice from behind me. I turned and looked up at Rob, who was wearing the biggest smile I had ever seen.
molly "Look," I joked, "It's the cripple. And what are you smiling about?"
molly "Oh nothing. Just in a good mood I guess." He came and stood beside me, lightly draping his arm around my shoulders. "Well aren't you going to introduce me?" he asked.
molly Sadie's expression was something to say the least. "You've got to be fucking kidding me." she finally got out. "You're... you know..." In her excitement, Sadie was obviously finding it difficult to make a complete sentence.
molly "Rob," I began, "This is my cousin Sadie."
molly "And let me guess. You have Paul Doucette Syndrome." It wasn't hard to figure out who Sadie's favorite matchstick was. Framed pictures of the adorable drummer with a different hair color in each one, hung everywhere. "I don't blame you." Rob went on, "Paul's a pretty fine lookin man." Sadie couldn't contain herself any longer.
molly "You're telling me this?" she practically shouted at him. "Do you live with him? What's he like? Is he as funny as he is in all of his interviews? Does he have a girlfriend? Can you tell him to call me? Can he come over here right now?" Sadie fired the questions one after the other at Rob, not even bothering to pause for Rob to answer or to take a breath.
molly "And this is before her morning coffee. I remarked to Rob with a small smile. Then I turned back to Sadie. "Calm yourself. How's Rob even supposed to tell you anything if you don't even stop long enough to breathe? I'm going to make breakfast now while you calm down and get dressed, then we can talk about Paul." I turned and went down the hall into the small kitchen where I began to make french toast, hashbrowns, and coffee. Then, while everything was cooking, I went over to the sliding doors which looked out onto our overgrown backyard. Though our house was far from being a mansion, it was good enough for me. While I examined the yard, trying to predict what the weather was going to be like, I became aware of something creeping up the back of my shirt. The very thought of an insect crawling on me made me shudder. A low male voice behind me said, "Gotcha!" and Rob came up beside me. I should have known.
molly "Very funny Rob." I said sarcastically.
molly "I thought so."
molly "you would. Don't you remember what happened last time you used that line on me?" I turned and went to the stove to flip the french toast.
molly "How could I forget?" Rob rubbed his leg and sat down on the counter. It took me a little while to gather up enough courage to ask him the question whose answer I both did and did not want to know, but I finally forced the words out of my mouth.
molly "So what's the plan for today? " I asked, somehow managing to sound nonchalant.
molly "Hmmmmm," Rob scratched his head thoughtfully. "I'm supposed to pick up Paul in an hour. You and Sadie could come with me if you want."
molly "Can't Paul drive himself?" I asked.
molly "His Jeep's in the shop." Rob explained.
molly Sadie emerged from the bathroom closely resembling her old self except for the expression of faint disbelief that seemed to have been permanently engraved into her face.
molly "Hurry up and eat so we can go pick up Paul." I told her.
molly "So we can what?" Sadie's composure was again shattered. "Are you serious?"
molly "I swear," Rob complained. "you girls need o get your hearing checked or something." He laughed at Sadie as she examined her clothes disgustedly.
molly "I can't wear this to meet Paul. And my hair is a mess." I sighed. At this rate we definitely were oing to be late picking up Paul, but I knew how much Sadie wanted to look her best, so I simply told her to get her ass moving if she wanted to meet him. I too was excited about meeting Paul, but I was ready.***
molly "We had been driving for about twenty minutes and I was beginning to get car sick. "Are we there yet?" I asked Rob in a childish voice from my seat beside him.
molly "Almost. Like five more minutes." Just As Rob had promised, we pulled into the driveway of a really nice and really big house. Rob cut the engine and jumped out of the car.
molly "Paul lives here all by himself?" Sadie asked. "Seems like a lot of space for a little guy like Paul."
molly "I live here too." Rob told her, opening the door, which was unlocked. "Damn him. I told him to lock the doors. One day he's going to get kidnapped when I'm not here, then he'll learn."
molly We walked through the front door with Rob calling, "Paul, where are you? We've got company." There was no reply, so Rob told us to wait in the living room while he ran upstairs to wake up Paul.
molly "Hey Summer," Sadie whispered excitedly as soon as Rob had gone.
molly "We're actually going to meet Paul. Please tell me I'm not dreaming."
molly "I don't think you are, but I'm still trying to figure that out myself. If we are, I'll kill you if you wake me up."
molly "Don't worry," Sadie assured me. "I won't."
molly "Just be happy that you are lucky enough to have a cousin like me with the mad phat connections." The sound of footsteps on the stairs cut off our conversation and I looked out the living room door. Rob was decending the stairs in the usual fashion, but Paul slid down the banister. Then his face appeared in the doorway, wearing a goofy grin.
molly "Whoa mama!" he remarked seeing Sadie and I. "Nice job Rob. Which one's mine?" Rob punched him good-naturedly and walked over to stand beside me. I glanced over at Sadie to see her face. I could tell that she was trying really hard to keep herself under control. I knew the amount of difficulty she was probably having. All she ever talked about was Paul, Paul, Paul, and now he was standing only about six feet away from her, looking a bit disheveled, but still his cute self. Paul came over to me and shook my hand. I gave him a smile, thinking how lucky I really was. Then he turned to Sadie. "Bonjoure Madam." he said kissing her hand. Sadie, unable to walk to the couch, sat down on the floor.
molly "This is pure fucking craziness." she said. Paul was obviously flattered by the fact that she was so happy to meet him, and he sat down on the floor in front of her. Then he began to wave his hand in front of her eyes.
molly "When I snap my fingers and count to three," he said in a hypnotic voice, "you will awaken and speak to me." Sadie smiled an focused her eyes on Paul's face.
molly "Sorry, this is just so fucking amazing. I mean, Paul Doucette is sitting right here." she waved her hand is Paul's direction. "I don't know what to say."
molly "I know. Sometimes I have a hard time talking to myself too. I'm just like whoa, what am I supposed to say to a rock star?" His grin widened. I felt like I could fly. Not only had I made it possible for Sadie to meet the man of her dreams, but I had at last found a guy that treated me like a human being. It was a great feeling to finally be doing something right.
molly "What are you thinking about?" Rob asked me quietly.
molly "Nothing, just how happy I am right now." He squeezed my hand and said, "Let's leave these two alone. I'll give you the grand tour of the bachelor pad." He grabbed my hand and pulled me from the room. The house was even bigger than it looked from the outside. There were four bathrooms, three bedrooms, a big kitchen, a living room, and a room with video games and an air hockey table. Each of the rooms was extremely large, especially the bed rooms.
molly "And this one's mine." Rob said, stepping into the biggest of the three bedrooms. It had a big-screen TV with a VCR. His scent filled the room. I walked over and sat down on the comfortable-looking bed, feeling a little lightheaded. Rob came and sat beside me, placing his arm around me and pulling me closer to him.
molly "Let's finish what we started before you went and fell asleep on me last night." he whispered. For some reason, the thought of sex scared me. I didn't want this relationship to turn out the same way my last one had. I couldn't just jump into bed with this guy who I had met only twenty-four hours ago, even if he was Rob Thomas.
molly "I can't." I said quietly with some reluctance.
molly "Why not?" he asked, not even attempting to hide the disappointment in his voice. "Don't you want to?"
molly "Hell, you have no idea how much I want to. But I just can't, not now." I stood up. "I'm sorry Rob." I turned and ran from the room. Then I stood at the top of the stairs, contemplating whether or not I wanted to go back with Sadie and Paul and interrupt the laughter and conversation drifting up to my ears. For a few seconds, I was amazed at how quickly they had connected. I was glad that they were getting along so well and wished I could be as relaxed and layed-back as my cousin. What's wrong with you, I asked myself. With the way you've been flirting with Rob ever since you've met, what else do you expect? Did I want Rob or didn't I? What I needed was to get my priorities straight. No. What I needed was something to drink and a cold shower to clear my head. As I raced down the stairs, I slapped on a smile so that I wouldn't have to answer any questions about what had happened. I hated answering unnecessary questions and considered them a waste of everyone's time.
molly Paul and Sadie were engrossed in a game of Jenga when Summer entered the living room unobserved.
molly "Jenga! Jenga!" Sadie chanted as Paul attempted to pull one of the wooden blocks out from the bottom of the stack.
molly "Shut up!" Paul shouted at her. "You're wrecking my concentration." After he had said this, Paul got this look on his face like he was about to sneeze. "Oh shit!" was all that he could manage before the powerful sneeze shook his arm and the entire tower of blocks collapsed, flying in every direction. Paul looked devastated. Summer attempted to hold back her laughter, but it was useless.
molly "Where the hell did you come from?" Paul turned, for the first time noticing Summer's presence.
molly "You should have seen your face when the thing fell. I wish I had a camera." she told him. Sadie was rolling on the floor laughing and for a few minutes she was unable to say anything.
molly "What the fuck are you laughing at?" As if he didn't know.
molly "I'm sorry Paul," Sadie finally gasped out. "but you looked like some little kid who just broke his favorite toy or something. you were so serious and you're just like. "You're wrecking my concentration." and then you..." Both Summer and Sadie collapsed with laughter again.
molly "Paul, you are so damn funny." Sadie told him. Paul took this as a compliment and his grin returned.
molly "What can I say? I like making people laugh."
molly "You're pretty good at it." Sadie responded.
molly "That's not all I've been told I'm good at." His grin widened. Then, without warning, he leaned over the table and kissed Sadie, a real kiss. A look of shock crossed her face.
molly "Go Paul! Go Paul! Go Paul!" Summer called from the doorway. The kiss was intense and lasted for a long time. When Paul finally pulled back, it was his turn to laugh. Sadie had the funniest, most indescribable look on her face that Paul and Summer had ever seen. A bright red flush quickly crept onto Sadie's cheeks and he began to pick up the Jenga pieces from the floor to hide her embarrassment. It was then that Summer became aware of the fact that she was incredibly thirsty.
molly "Paul, can I grab a drink from the kitchen?" she asked, not wanting to just walk in the kitchen and start looking through cabinets.
molly "Yeah, knock yourself out." She left the room and Paul returned his gaze to Sadie, his face becoming serious. "What do you think happened between Summer and Rob? Its not like Rob to get a girl into his room and have her leave five minutes later. Believe me. My room's right down the hall from his." Sadie just shrugged.
molly "I have no clue. Even if I've lived with her for a while, I still don't understand her, and I don't know anything about Rob." Before Paul could respond, Summer returned, a glass of apple juice in her hand.
molly "Better not let Adam find out that you're drinking his juice." Paul remarked.
molly "He lives here too?"
molly "No, but he has to have apple juice everywhere he goes. It's kinda scary, but since Adam's such a cool guy, I don't bug him about it...much." The three talked for a while longer about nothing in particular.
molly "So, what are you two doing tonight?" Paul asked Summer and Sadie.
molly "I don't know." Sadie said with a sigh. "I think we may have hot dates with these two guys."
molly "Damn! I guess that means that you're not available then, Huh?" He looked disappointed.
molly "I think that we could arrange something." Sadie said. Paul did not even try to hide his eagerness.
molly "Really?" he said smiling. "Yes, yes, yes!" He began jumping up and down. Then he stopped abruptly and said, "I mean, I'll have to check my schedule, but I think it's doable." Sadie and Summer laughed.
molly "Hey Paul, you think that you could give us a ride home so that we could get ready?" Summer looked a little too eager to leave.
molly "I don't know. Rob doesn't like when I use his car because when he gets in it after I used it, he can't even get in cause the seat is too close to the steering wheel."
molly "I'll drive." Summer told him.
molly "but what about when I have to drive home?" Paul obviously didn't want to drive the car at all.
molly "If he has a problem with you driving his car, he can call me." she assured him.
molly "Whatever you say. But if I get my ass kicked, you owe me one." He grabbed a set of keys off of the coffee table and threw them to Summer.
molly She practically ran from the house, calling over her shoulder, "See ya later Rob." Paul and Sadie followed close behind, giving each other confused looks.
molly "What the hell is going on here, Paul?" Sadie whispered.
molly "ya got me. Whatever it is, I know from personal experience that no one can stay mad at a matchstick for long." He smiled at Sadie. "As for tonight, you'd better be prepared to have fun. Whatever's going on between Summer and Rob is going on between them. If they want to act all freaky, let em. They'll get over it. Don't let it ruin your time tonight. I'm sure it'll be ok." He put his arm around her and walked to the car. Sadie could not believe that the guy who's face was plastered all over her room had his arm around her and was going to take her out on a date that night. Her luck had certainly changed for the better since she and Summer had moved here. She had been more than happy to move from Connecticut when her cousin had suggested it. Though Sadie suspected that Summer had wanted to move for other reasons than she had given, Sadie hadn't asked any questions, mostly because she couldn't have wanted the move more. One of these days, Sadie told herself, the two of them had to sit down and have a serious conversation. She knew they both had things that the other should know.
molly "Aren't you going to lock the door, Paul?" Summer asked him as he jumped into the back seat.
molly "Nah, I like to see how pissed I can make Rob before he comes after me with sharp pointy objects."
molly "Has he ever?" Sadie turned in the front seat and asked.
molly "Not yet, but I'm workin on it."
molly "Well, don't go and get yourself hurt and cancel our date. Then I'm going to be the one with the sharp pointy object." Paul laughed. Summer put the key in the ignition and the car roared to life. She pushed the excelerator down and they sped toward Sadie and Summer's house, breaking the speed limit by at least ten MPH.***
molly "rob heard the door close as Summer, Sadie, and Paul left the house. They hadn't even asked if they could use his car. But that wasn't the reason that he was so pissed. He had screwed up pretty badly this time. It really isn't my fault, he thought. He was used to getting just about every girl he wanted. He hadn't expected Summer to react the way she had. Then again, he had learned numerous times that he never knew what to expect from her. He punched his thigh hard. Stop making excuses for yourself. You knew that she was going through a tough time, and you still tried to jump in bed with her. Now he had no idea what to do. He decided that he would call Summer once he had a talk with Adam. Adam always gave him good advice. As for Paul, He'd deal with him later. Now Rob picked up the phone and pressed speed dial one.
molly "Hello?" Adam picked up.
molly "Hey man.."
molly "Ok Rob, what's wrong?" Adam could always tell when someone had a problem, and this time was no exception.
molly "Look man, I need your advice. You know that girl I told you about?"***
molly Paul gave Sadie a quick kiss and, moving the driver's seat forward, climbed back into the car. "Bye baby." he said. "See ya at eight." The car raced away from the curb with a screech of tires.
molly "No wonder why Rob doesn't like Paul driving his car. He's a maniac." Sadie smiled at her cousin. "Thanks Summer."
molly "For what?" Summer pretended not to know what she was talking about.
molly "For taking so long to get those paper towels." they both laughed. Then Sadie's face went serious. "But really, what's going on with you and Rob?" Summer just shrugged.
molly "Nothing. He just had a headache, so I thought that I'd let him lie down." She smiled innocently. "Why? Did you think that I was mad at him or something?"
molly "Well, you seemed sort of, I dunno, in a hurry to get out of that house, and..."
molly "Me? Mad at Rob Thomas? Come on Sadie, I thought you knew me better than that." They both laughed again as Sadie put the key into the lock. "That's weird." she said thoughtfully. "I'm positive I locked the door before we left." Pulling the keys from the lock, she pushed the door open and stepped inside, flicking on the light switch. "Fuck!" Summer came up beside her.
molly "what's the matter? Did...?" She stopped abruptly as she glanced down the short hallway into the kitchen. It was a mess. It seemed as though every dish they owned had been taken from the cabinets and smashed on the floor. There wasn't a single thing in tact. The door of the microwave had been completely torn off and was lying in a puddle of spaghetti sauce.
molly "What the hell is this?" Summer turned to Sadie, her eyes flashing angrily.
molly "If you ask me, it looks like we've been robbed."
molly A chill ran down Summer's spine. "Robbed." she repeated. Then she began to search the downstairs. Sadie followed, a stake knife in her hand. Summer glanced uneasily at the knife.
molly "Just in case the bastard's still here." Sadie quickly explained.
molly After searching the entire floor, they found that the kitchen was the only room that had been touched, though nothing had been taken. Warily Summer climbed the stairs that led to her bedroom. It was destroyed. The closet door was thrown open and all of her clothes had been torn from the hangers and lay in piles all over the room. Most were ripped and/or ruined, except for one thing. lying on Summer's bed was the white tank top that read, "Matchbox 20 Stole My Baby." She tried to figure out why that had been put there, but soon forgot about it when she looked up at her walls. Every picture of Matchbox 20 that she owned had been slashed. Her Yourself Or Someone Like You CD had been broken in half and placed on her dresser. But all of this seemed unimportant when she caught sight of the picture Rob had given her only last night. It was torn into little pieces and scattered everywhere. The sight of her most prized possessions destroyed and the fact that someone had been in her room and touched her stuff was too much. She burst into tears. Sadie came in from the hall way and looked around.
molly "Jesus Christ! Someone really hates Matchbox 20." Then, seeing Summer crying, went to her and gave her a big hug. "Don't worry." she soothed. "We're gonna catch the ass hole that did this." Then thinking, she said, "I don't get why he didn't mess with my room though. It's got just as many pictures as yours, if not more." She quickly added, "We'll get a new copy of every one of those pictures. Right now you need to calm down. Nothing was stolen."
molly "But my picture from Rob is ruined, and it was so good. Everyone looked so good."
molly "I'm sure when Rob and Paul hear about this they'll make you a new picture a thousand times better." Sadie could tell that it wasn't only the loss of the picture that was causing her cousin to become so emotional, but she figured that if Summer really wanted her to know, she'd tell her. Until then, the police needed to be called. Seeing that the phone in Summer's room was not usable, (it had been smashed like the dishes), Sadie went downstairs, only to find that that phone was also broken. She concluded to go to the neighbor's house and use their phone. When she returned, she and Summer would go shopping for a new outfit. Summer didn't have any clothes to wear that night because they had all been ripped up. Sadie thought that a short shopping trip would do them both some good. She walked to the next door neighbor's house and asked him if he had seen anything, which he hadn't. She told the neighbor, a man in his forties, about what had happened. He said that she could use his phone and that he would keep an eye on the house while she and Summer were gone.
molly "Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I think that I'll wait till tomorrow to call the cops, though. Summer's a little stressed and the last thing she needs right now is some guy asking her two million questions. We probably won't be back tonight. I'm not going to stay in that house until the guy that did this is caught, just in case he decides to come back."
molly "Sure thing. I'll make sure no one tries to break in again." He smiled reassuringly at Sadie. "Try not to worry so much."
molly "Thanks again." Sadie called, leaving the house.
molly "when she arrived back home and closed and locked the door behind herself, she returned upstairs to inform Summer of the meeting with the neighbor. Summer was sitting on her bed, staring at the white tank top laid out there.
molly "Are you going to be ok? You look a little pale." Summer was far from ok and was white as a ghost.
molly "Huh?" She looked up from the shirt at Sadie with somewhat empty and distant eyes, still full of tears. She obviously hadn't heard her cousin enter. "What did you say?"
molly "Come on." Sadie grabbed Summer's arm and tugged her from the room. She seemed to be in a daze.
molly "Where are we going?" Summer asked absently.
molly "First we're going to get you the best damn outfit we can find, then we're going to Rob and Paul's." Ignoring Summer's protests about what might happen to the house if they left, Sadie grabbed her keys, locked the door, and jumped into her car and Summer climbed in beside her. In the light from the makeup mirror, Sadie could see that her cousin was shaking all over. She knew exactly what would raise her spirits. Quickly Sadie hit play on the car CD player. Then she pressed the skip button three times. Push came softly through the speakers, and Sadie waited to see the smile that she knew would spread across her cousin's face at the sound of her favorite song. Instead, the tears that had at some point stopped, began to fall again, faster this time. Loud sobs mixed in with the cords and lyrics of Push, making it sound even sadder than it was. "Screw shopping!" Sadie started the car and raced in the direction of Paul and Rob's house.***
molly Rob stared down at the paper plate he held in his hand. He had been dialing the same number for ten minutes, but there had been no response. In his relentless calling, he had forgotten all about his grudge against Paul, who now sat across from him at the kitchen table.
molly "Look man," Paul said, finally breaking the silence between them. "It's obvious that no one's going to pick up any time soon, so Just let it go." Rob knew that Paul was right. It wouldn't do either of them any good just dialing and redialing the same number over and over again. Rob had explained everything that had happened between him and Summer since they had met in the grocery store yesterday. At first, Paul didn't understand why Summer had run out of Rob's room. From the description Rob had given him about Summer's reaction when she first recognized him, Paul thought that she would have been like all the other girls. Then Rob told him what Summer had been through in the past few months and Paul understood.
molly Now they both sat staring at the clock. It was seven thirty. Just a half hour longer, Rob thought to himself. He had wanted to talk things out with Summer before they went out tonight, but now he'd have to wait until he and Paul picked the girls up. He got up and started to pace the kitchen.
molly "Hey Man," Paul said looking up at him. "I know what'll calm you down. Let's play some Crash Bandicoot." Rob shook his head.
molly "Nah, I'm not in the mood. I'll lose if I play you now, and I don't want to break my winning streak." Rob continued with his pacing.
molly "Shit Rob!" Paul exclaimed dramatically. "Could you sit down or at least stop pacing. You're driving me fucking nuts." Rob went to the fridge and got out two beers, handing one to Paul. Then he resumed his pacing. Paul sighed exasperatedly, but didn't say anything else about his friend's frustrating habit. "I still don't get what the hell you're freaking out over." Paul blurted out of nowhere. "I mean, it's not like you can't talk once we pick her up." The thing was that Rob wasn't good at face-to-face confrontations and that was the reason Alexander What's-his-name invented the telephone. Rob's patience was coming to its end and Paul was about to leave the room because the pacing was making him crazy, when the doorbell rang."
molly "Shit! Just what we need. Company."
molly "I'll get it!" Paul jumped up from the table, knocking his chair over in his haste to get out of the room. when he opened the door, he was both surprised and relieved to see Sadie and Summer standing there. But his relieved feeling soon changed when he glanced at Summer. "What the hell happened to her?" he asked Sadie. Summer appeared to be sleepwalking and unaware of anything around her.
molly "I'll explain as soon as you let us in."
molly "Right. Sorry." Paul stepped aside, allowing Sadie to pull Summer through the door before it was closed again. Then suddenly, Summer turned and frantically locked the dead bolt. Paul gave her a strange look which she seemed not to have noticed. The three walked into the kitchen and sat down at the table. In the bright lights, Summer looked like even more of a mess than Paul had first seen. Rob turned from the refrigerator where he had been getting himself another beer.
molly "Hey guys, I thought that we were going to..." He stopped when he saw the three faces at the table. "What the hell is going on?" he asked. Sadie explained in detail the events that had taken place since Paul had dropped her and Summer off.
molly "And I still can't figure out why nothing was taken and why the guy didn't do anything to my room. Any suggestions?"
molly "I dunno." Paul thoughtfully rubbed his chin.
molly "There's one thing that I do know." Sadie said to Paul. "I really need to use the bathroom. Can you show me where it is?" Paul got up from the table and, taking Sadie's hand, led her from the room.
molly "This way Madam.."
molly As the two left the kitchen, a silence filled the room, only broken by the barely audible sobs that still came from Summer. "Summer look," Rob began, "I know this probably isn't the best time right now but I just wanted to say I'm sorry for the way I acted today." Summer looked up at him, as though just now realizing that he was there. As she looked at Rob with his apologetic eyes and worried expression, she was julted roughly back to reality, as if she had just been violently shaken awake from a bad dream. She knew the one thing that she needed right now, and there was only one person who could give it to her. She got up and ran to Rob, who quickly closed his arms around her, holding her close. The sobs still slipped from between her lips and her body still trembled, but she felt safer than she ever had before. For a while they just stood there in each other's arms. Then slowly Summer stopped trembling and her sobs became fewer and fewer until they too stopped. She looked up from where she had been resting her head on Rob's chest.
molly "You are so amazing." she told him. A look of surprise crossed Rob's face, but it was quickly replaced with one of happiness. These were the first words that she had spoken to him since earlier that day in his bedroom, and already she was complimenting him. He really didn't know what to expect from this girl. "I mean," she continued, "I walk in here like something out of Night of the Living Dead. I have no idea what the hell is going on around me, and all you say is "sorry" with those eyes of yours, and everything's fine in a few minutes. Usually I'm the one having to calm other people down. I'm never like this." Rob found that hard to believe, seeing as how he had only known Summer for about two days and she must have flipped out at least twice each day. If this was not the way she usually acted then what was she really like? He resolved in his mind to find that out sooner or later.
molly "Thanks Rob." she said finally, tipping her head back so that her eyes met and locked with his. Then she kissed him with all the emotions that she had for him, letting him know exactly how she felt. He responded by kissing her back with just as much feeling, if not more. There was no way of telling how long it lasted, but time was unimportant. This kiss was even better than the last one had been because it wasn't just caused by the heat of the moment. It had more in it. A noise at the door made Summer jump, but when she tried to pull away from Rob and turn to see who it was, he wouldn't let her go. She gave a little laugh and gave up on the idea of discovering the source of the sound. She didn't really care anyway.
molly They continued kissing for a long time. Summer, her legs like jello by this time, was forced to end the blissful kisses. She came beside Rob and hopped up onto the counter where she sat quietly swinging her legs. She couldn't help but grin, and she was practically glowing with contentment. It was impossible not to be glowing after that.
molly Rob considered whether or not he should ask Summer the questions that had been on his mind ever since he had heard of the break in. He decided against it,.
molly "Rob, I'm really hungry." Summer sold him. "Can we go get some dinner now that we're...um... finished." Her cheeks turned a light shade of pink, but she ignored it as she rubbed her grumbling stomach.
molly "Yeah, let's go find Sadie and Paul." Summer followed him up the stairs to a door which was closed. knocking he call in a high, Spanish-accented, feminine voice, "Room service. You want chocoleetes?"
molly "Get the fuck out of here Rob." Paul shouted from behind the door.
molly "Rob was silent for about fifteen seconds, then knocked again. "Room service. You want towels? I give you more towels."
molly "Shit Rob, didn't you hear me the first time?"
molly "Who Rob? I no know who this Rob is. I bring you favorite hooker from street corner. She say her name candy. You want?"
molly Angry footsteps came towards the door, which was soon flung open to reveal a very pissed looking Paul. "Damn it Rob. What the hell do you want?"
molly We're waiting for his royal highness to get his royal ass into some decent clothes so that us starving peasants can get some food."
molly "You "peasants" certainly didn't look too damn hungry when I came into the kitchen to get a drink, which, by the way, I never did get cause Rob was blocking the fridge, and I wasn't about to ask him to move. I thought that I'd be nice and let him finish what he was doing, something that he obviously doesn't do for anyone." Paul made a face and Summer laughed. Then her stomach growled loudly. "Ok, give me five minutes." He slammed the door in Rob's face. Rob and Summer burst out laughing, then returned to the kitchen to wait.
molly "Rob, I have to get some stuff out of the car. " Summer looked at him. "Can you come with me?" Rob, asking no questions, followed her out to Sadie's car where, after searching through the glove compartment, Summer found the makeup bag that she had come out for. Slamming the passenger's side door, she followed Rob into the house and locked the door behind them.
molly "where's a big mirror?" she asked Rob.
molly "Well," Rob responded mischievously, "There's one in my room." They again climbed the stairs and turned into Rob's room. His dresser had a really big mirror attached to it, just what Summer wanted. She emptied the contents of the bag onto the dresser: hair brush, bobby pins, perfume, and makeup. Rob stood behind her, watching her try various hair styles. She finally decided to do it up into a french twist. This took a while, but Paul and Sadie obviously weren't in much of a hurry to go. Finally, the last bobby pin was in place and Summer began to apply makeup to her face, which was no longer pale. When she was finished, she squirted a little Sunflowers perfume onto herself, then made a show of turning around to face Rob.
molly "So, what do you think?" Rob bent his head and kissed her deeply. This made her smile.
molly "there, that's better." Rob said with a smile. Summer laughed and they went downstairs to wait for Paul and Sadie who were taking much longer than five minutes. Summer played with the ring on her right hand distractedly. It was a beautiful heart-shaped ruby that reflected the light brilliantly. When Rob asked her where she had gotten it, Summer told him that her best friend had given it to her just before she had moved to Orlando. It was a very expensive gift, but it meant a lot to Summer, and she never took it off. When she was bored, she twisted it around her finger, absently watching it sparkle.
molly "I think that Paul's five minutes are up." Summer said as her stomach growled again. Rob nodded and ran up the stairs.
molly "Yo Paul," he called as he knocked on the door. "Let's go. I'm dying here." ***
molly Paul jumped out of bed. He had fallen asleep. "Shit." he whispered when Rob knocked on the door. Sadie groaned and turned over, awakened by the knocking.
molly "What time is it?" she asked in a sleepy voice.
molly "I dunno but we'd better get up and dressed so we can get somethin to eat. I'm really hungry."
molly "Yeah, me too."
molly Sadie climbed out of bed, her hair a little messed up, and reached for her clothes which were lying on the floor, and Paul did the same.
molly "Wow! We must have been in here for a long time. It's really dark." Paul observed looking out the window.
molly After they both had fixed up a little, they made their grand entrance, welcomed by loud applause from Summer and Rob.
molly "Hey guys." Paul greeted them with a yawn. He sat down in a chair an was just about to crack his back when Summer ran over to him and put her hands on his shoulders.
molly "Don't." She told him.
molly "Don't what?"
molly "Crack your back. I hate it."
molly "Ok, Ok. You scared the shit out of me, Summer."
molly "That's nice." she said turning away from him. "Now, if you're sure that your ready, lets go get some food."
molly "Word." Paul said, standing and walking to the door.
molly "Do you guys have an alarm system?" Summer asked suddenly.
molly "Yeah," rob answered. "but we never use it."
molly "Well, you might wanna turn it on while we're gone."
molly "Why?" Paul asked. "
molly "Just trust me on this one." Summer said quietly opening the door. There were a series of beeps as Paul set the house alarm.
molly "There! You can rest easy. Adam's apple juice will be safe from all harm." Sadie and Summer both laughed.
molly Summer climbed into the Passenger seat beside Rob, while Sadie and Paul sat in back.
molly "Where to?" Rob asked everyone.
molly "I'm in the mood for some chicken." Summer told him.
molly "Yeah," Sadie agreed. "Me too."
molly "Chicken it is." Rob concluded, starting the car and pulling from the driveway. No one inside the white Toyota saw the car just a little ways down the street, turn and start to follow them as they drove onto the highway. Summer began humming Kody suddenly.
molly "Every time we get onto a highway." Rob remarked.
molly Paul used the back of Summer's chair and his legs for a drum set and started drumming along while Sadie sang backup for Summer who, by this time, was singing the lyrics instead of humming. They had pretty good voices, so the new rendition of Kody didn't sound that bad. Rob laughed, keeping his eyes on the road. When the song was finally over, Paul called to no one in particular, "Any requests?"
molly "I think we've had enough for one night." Rob told him as they turned into the parking lot of a small restaurant.
molly "Yes, Food!" Summer cried, jumping out of the car almost before it had stopped and ran to the entrance of the place. The rest followed her inside at a slower pace.
molly When they were seated and had ordered drinks, Summer glanced at the menu.
molly The food soon arrived and they all dug in. No one said anything for awhile because their mouths were too full. They finished eating and Rob took out a pack of Camel cigarettes. He lit one for himself, then touched its glowing tip to the end of a second, which he offered to Summer. She shook her head.
molly "I don't smoke." She told him. So Rob tried giving it to Sadie, but she didn't smoke either. Finally, Rob handed it to Paul.
molly "Thanks man." he said sarcastically. "Your so generous." Summer stood.
molly "I'm going outside for some fresh air." she informed everyone. "Be right back." Rob thought of going with her, but figured that she would have asked him if she had wanted him to follow. Briefly he thought that it probably wasn't the best idea that she go alone, but then he remembered the bruise she had given him, which still hurt but at least he could walk on it now. He turned once she had gone from his range of vision. Paul and Sadie were making out right there. "Get a room" he told them. "This is a public restaurant."
molly "So what." Paul snapped, but he stopped what he was doing. Rob ordered another round of drinks and the three talked easily, as if they had known each other for years. It never crossed their minds that maybe they shouldn't have let Summer go outside alone. She was a big girl and could take care of herself, or so everyone thought. None of them saw the man in the corner get up and leave the restaurant. Even if they had, they probably wouldn't have thought anything of it. They should have.***
molly I walked from the restaurant, the scent of cigarette smoke still gently clinging to me. I couldn't stand that smell and I didn't know how anyone else could. The street that the restaurant was on was somewhat quiet, though cars passed frequently. I inhaled the clean air deeply into my lungs. I loved Orlando. It was never really that cold, unlike Connecticut, where I had lived before I moved to Florida. I sighed happily, for the moment forgetting about the break in. I thought about the kissing earlier in the kitchen and a shiver ran through my entire body. Obviously Rob felt the same way about me that I felt about him. If I started seriously dating him and got kisses like that every day... It was a nice thought. My ring caught the light from a passing car and my conscience felt heavy.
molly I hadn't told Rob the whole truth about the ring, but it was only because I hadn't wanted to make the night even worse than it already was. Now, not only was I going to have to explain where the ring really came from, I would also have to explain why I had lied in the first place. Just then, the restaurant door opened. What better time to talk to Rob about the ring than right now, I thought. I didn't even bother to turn around. I knew it was Rob. He came up behind me, grabbed my waist, and whispered "Gotcha!" in my ear.
molly "That's getting a little old." I told him. "Listen Rob," I continued. "About my ring. I didn't get it from my best friend. It's really my..."
molly "Who the fuck is rob?" he whispered.
molly "Rob, I'm serious. Stop it. Your not funny," I struggled to free myself from the death grip on my waist. "and your hurting me." I wined.
molly "I said, who the fuck is Rob." My blood froze and my heart stopped. I knew that voice. "Answer me." A loud, painful smack across the face stunned me. Then my cheek began to burn. I couldn't move. I couldn't speak. I couldn't even think. Fear had paralyzed me so completely that I felt like I was floating above my body, watching the whole scene take place.
molly The man holding me turned me around to face him. I looked into the all-too-familiar brown eyes, burning angrily into mine. "Did you hear me?" He hissed.
molly "Yes," I heard myself saying in a small voice. "I'm sorry Eric. You just scared me." I knew exactly what he wanted to hear from months of experience. Giving him what he wanted was the best and only defense I had. even if I did try to kick him like I had done to Rob, by the time I got away and told someone about what had happened, he'd already be gone and it would be far from over.
molly A look of satisfaction crossed Eric's face. "That's better." he said smugly. He's crazy, I thought. Then, as if he had remembered something, the anger returned to his eyes. "You still haven't answered my question."
molly "What question?"
molly "Don't play dumb with me, bitch." Another slap. "I know all your fucking games. They don't work on me anymore. Now tell me who Rob is." He answered his own question. "He's the guy in the pictures, isn't he? Those pictures in your room? Answer me damn it." I gathered myself together and confirmed his suspicions.
molly "Yes," I told him, quickly adding, "But it's nothing, really. We're just friends." Eric might have been crazy, but he wasn't stupid, and I knew damn well that he wouldn't believe that explanation.
molly "Don't you fucking lie to me." he said, a threat in his voice. "I saw the way you were looking at each other that night, outside your house."
molly He's been watching me? The bastard's been watching me, and following me? This angered me. I knew how to make Eric really pissed off. "Fine, we had sex twice today and once last night, and it was really good." Eric slapped me even harder than he had the first two times, and the right side of my face went numb.
molly "I didn't want it to happen like this, but your being difficult. You were always difficult." He let go of me with one hand, but gripped my shoulder tightly with the other while he reached into his pocket and took something out, holding it to my throat. It was a razor blade. "If you scream I'll kill you, and don't think I'm too scared to do it. I'm not scared." It sounded more like he was trying to convince himself rather than me, but I didn't make a sound as he pushed me ahead of him. There was no way that I could get away now. Desperately I tried to think of a way that I could let Rob, Paul, and Sadie know that I was in trouble. Then it came to me. I put my hands behind my back. "What the hell are you doing." Eric sneered, putting the blade so close to my throat that it's cold metal seemed to already be cutting into my skin, but I knew that this was just my imagination.
molly "Nothing." I said in a hurt voice, as if upset by the very idea that Eric thought I was up to something. Then, I gritted my teeth as a faint ringing sound drifted to my ears, but Eric apparently hadn't heard it, thank god. "Where are we going?" I asked, surprised at how normal my voice sounded.
molly "It's a surprise." His voice was happy and excited, as if he were not holding a razor blade to my throat. We finally got to his car where he pushed me in, telling me to lie down in the back seat. "And if you even try to signal passing cars or..." He waved the razor at me. I cringed.
molly "I won't." I said with a sweet smile.
molly "Just in case." He tied my hands behind my back. There goes plan A, I thought to myself. He pulled away from the curb and I attempted to keep track of the right and left turns we took, but it was hopeless. I closed my eyes and tried to think of a new plan of escape. If I could just get him to trust me and leave me alone for a few seconds, then I might be able to get away. It was the only thing I could think of Not a very good plan, but it was worth a shot. Until the chance came up to put the plan into action, there wasn't really anything I could do. I just prayed that Rob would get my message.***
molly Rob finished the last of his drink and stared into the empty glass. "Maybe you should go out and talk to her." Sadie finally said. About fifteen minutes had passed since Summer had left the restaurant for "some fresh air" and Rob was wondering what was taking her so long. "She's been outside for awhile, probably waiting for you to come out there."
molly "Yeah," Rob agreed standing up. "Probably." After he had left, Sadie turned to Paul, who was gazing intently at her.
molly "What?" she asked.
molly "Nothing." A secretive smile played across his lips. "Just thinkin."
molly "About...?"
molly "You don't wanna know." he said, shaking his head.
molly "yes I do." she argued.
molly "I'm pretty sure you'd smack me if I told you."
molly "Nah. I could never smack Paul Doucette. You're too cute."
molly "There's a first for everything."
molly "And a second, I hope." She gave him a flirtatious smile. Before Paul could respond, Rob came back into the restaurant looking a little frantic.
molly ""Hey man," Paul looked into his friend's worried face. "What's wrong?"
molly "She's not out there. I checked the parking lot, the car, everywhere. I can't find her.
molly "So? It's not like she got kidnapped or something." Sadie couldn't understand why Rob was making such a big deal.
molly "I think there's something you should know." Rob looked at Sadie hesitantly.
molly "Well, what are you waiting for?" Sadie demanded. "Spit it out."
molly "Sadie, I'm guessing you remember Summer's boyfriend Eric."
molly "Yeah, that guy scared me. I never got why Summer would even consider dating him. Seriously, I swear, he's a psycho. What about him?" Sadie looked confused. "And how the hell do you know about Eric anyway?"
molly Rob went on to explain everything that Summer had confided in him only last night. "Just because she thinks she saw Eric last week doesn't mean that she got kidnapped. She's probably just paranoid." Paul made a weak attempt to reassure Rob, but he wasn't sure himself.
molly "Let's just drive around a little to see if we can find her." Rob stood and walked outside with Paul and Sadie right behind him. On the way to the car, they were silent as each assessed the situation in their head. However, the silence was broken when Sadie suddenly stopped and bent down. The headlights of a passing car had reflected off of something on the ground and caught her eye. She picked the object up and looked at it.
molly "What?" Rob turned and came to stand in front of Sadie.
molly "Summer's engagement ring" She replied thoughtfully. "Which is really weird cause she never takes the thing off.
molly "Her what?" Rob thought that maybe he hadn't heard correctly.
molly "Engagement ring." Sadie repeated. "Didn't she tell you? Eric gave it to her just before they broke up. I don't know why she still wears the damn thing. That relationship is obviously over." She stopped when she saw the hurt in Rob's eyes. "I'm sorry, I thought that she told you since she told you everything else."
molly "Yeah, she told me." Rob recovered quickly. There was no need to make the situation worse than it already was. This was between him and Summer and no one else needed to be involved. Sadie gave him a look that clearly said she knew he was lying, but he pretended not to have seen it. "Let's go. We're wasting time."
molly As the car started up, Paul took the piece of jewelry from Sadie's hand. "How do you know this didn't just fall off." A closer examination revealed a couple of drops of blood on the ring which showed that it had obviously been forced off of Summer's finger.
molly "If it's any help at all," Sadie told Rob, ignoring Paul's remark. "Eric liked the woods and stuff. He always used to try and get Summer to go on these camping trips with him, but she'd never go. She hates bugs." Her eyes misted at the thought of never seeing her cousin again. She shook her head to clear it of the horrible images that had begun to flash across her mind.
molly "We'll find her." Paul's hand was on Sadie's shoulder as he whispered comfortingly to her. "I promise."
molly "You probably don't remember what his car looks like." Rob said doubtfully. Sadie gave a short, humorless laugh.
molly "How the hell could I forget it. It was the ugliest damn thing I've ever seen. It was so dirty and banged up, I'm surprised that it even went anywhere." What were the odds that they'd find that car in this city? Even if there was no car like it in the entire country, it didn't make their chances of locating Summer much better.
molly "That's a start. Just keep your eyes open, ok?" Rob looked like he was trying really hard to stay under control. Sadie knew exactly how he felt. She hoped that Paul was right in that they'd find Summer. She couldn't bare the thought of never seeing her again. Wherever she is, Sadie thought to herself, I hope she's ok. Though Sadie had never known about the way Eric had been treating her cousin, she did know that Summer knew how to handle people. It was one of her best talents. She had a feeling that Summer was using that skill to the best of her ability at this very moment.***
molly "But why not?" It was becoming painfully obvious that Eric was not going to leave me alone for a second.
molly "I told you not to ask questions." I couldn't take him giving me demands any more. Something inside me snapped.
molly "I HATE YOU!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. "Did you hear me? I FUCKING HATE YOU!" Eric's face became distorted with anger.
molly "You bitch!" He walked over to where I lay on the ground, my hands and feet tied. I saw the razor blade flash as he struck at my face with it. I had just enough time to roll to the right, The blade came so close to my face that I heard the breeze is gave as it cut across my collar bone. I moaned in pain. After the blow had been delivered, Eric appeared somewhat calmer. His eyes looked apologetic.
molly "I'm sorry. I didn't want to hurt you, but you made me mad. You know how I get when you make me mad." This is how it always had been. First he'd hurt me in one way or another, then, after it was over, he'd apologize and make me feel as though it were my fault. Not this time.
molly "Rob never hurts me, no matter how mad I make him." I was so furious that I barely felt the pain shoot down my arm, my wound bleeding very badly, as I sat up. The anger that had settled down inside Eric flamed back up.
molly "Shut the fuck up!" He strided up behind me and grabbed me by the shoulders. I let out a scream of pain as he hauled me to my feet and began to drag me deeper into the woods. The small glimmer of hope I had allowed myself that maybe someone would save me became smaller with every agonizing step Eric took. Branches and thorn tore at my clothes and caught in my skin.
molly This is it, I thought to myself, I'm gonna die. He's gonna kill me.***
molly "Stop!" Sadie said so suddenly that she startled Rob, who, to the annoyance of the car behind him, slammed on his breaks.
molly "Jesus Christ! What?" He pulled over behind a beat up old Mustang.
molly "That's it!" she cried pointing to the Mustang. "It's Eric's car."
molly "Positive. Where have you ever seen a car like that." She was right. The car in front of them was the painted the ugliest shade of puke orange Paul and Rob had ever seen.
molly He musta done that paint job himself, Paul thought. The three jumped from the car and looked around. Paul pointed out a path leading into the woods. There was something lying on the path. He walked over and picked it up. "Hey guys, look at this." It was a piece of cloth that looked as though it may have been torn off of the shirt Summer had worn to dinner that night.
molly They continued down the path, using the flashlight Rob had taken from the glove compartment in his car to search for signs that might point them in the right direction. They soon came to a clearing where the ground was trampled. Examining the ground around the edges of the clearing, Rob's breath caught in his throat and his stomach turned. There was a spot on the ground spattered with blood that looked somewhat fresh. The fears that he had managed to control so far now set his heart beating at a sickening pace. When he got his hands on the ass hole that had done this...
molly "What is it Rob." Paul came up beside him and looked to where the flashlight beam shone unsteadily.
molly "Oh shit!" he said under his breath. "We'd better find her soon." They turned away from the spot after showing Sadie and continued, looking for traces of blood as they went. It wasn't hard to find these. They were everywhere. Obviously either Summer or the person that was with her had been hurt pretty badly.
molly What if we don't find her in time, Sadie asked herself. Don't think, just look. All three were silent, not wanting anyone to know of their presence. Somewhere, not very far off, a loud, high-pitched scream shattered the quiet calm of the night.. Sadie began to run in the direction of the scream and Rob and Paul imitated her reaction. At least they knew that she was still alive, but that probably wouldn't be true for much longer.***
molly "Please." I pleaded. "You don't wanna do this." My voice shook, but I didn't cry. If I did, it meant that he had won, and I was still alive, so as far as I was concerned, I was winning. But things weren't looking too good.
molly "Don't tell me what I want. If you knew what I wanted, you never would have run off on me." Eric approached me slowly and started to remove what was left of my clothes.
molly "Please, not here." I begged, but he wouldn't listen. I knew that he could tell I was scared, and that pissed me off. There was no use fighting. I was so weak that I knew I couldn't resist him. I screamed once in pain, but he clamped his hand over my mouth.
molly When it was over, I was shaking even harder than before. Eric stared into space. Once again he had gotten what he wanted from me. I wondered what he would do next. Then I saw it. The razor blade, only about a foot away. If I could just free my hands... I felt a sharp rock imbedded into the ground a little to my left. I managed to get the rope that bound my hands around the rock somehow and began sawing quietly at the bonds. I felt the rope loosen and finally break. It had taken almost all of my willpower and energy to complete the task, but it all had paid off. Wit my hands still behind my back and my bleeding shoulder throbbing painfully, I wiggled cautiously closer to the razor blade and Eric. Just a few more inches.
molly "What the fuck are you doing?" A little more.
molly "Did you hear me?" My hand closed carefully around the icy metal of the razor. Then, using the last of my energy, I struck out with the blade as hard as I could. I felt it reach its mark and heard the shout of pain that came from Eric as he fell onto his side. I had stabbed him in the stomach and he now lay motionless on the ground. Suddenly I became aware of the most excruciating pain I had ever felt. It filled my whole body until I found it hard to breathe. I looked at Eric's still form, at the gash he had given me, and remembered what he had done to me only a few minutes before and the tears came. They flooded my eyes and spilled into the various cuts and scrapes I had gotten while being dragged through the woods. It stung, adding to my pain. I lay down on the ground and was vaguely aware of movement next to me. Oh God, I thought. He's not dead. I felt rather than saw someone watching me, but I was crying so hard that I couldn't see anything. Then a hand gently touched my face and I smelled a mixture of cigarette smoke and CK1. It's Rob, I told myself as my heart did a flip. I couldn't believe he had actually found me. I was able to murmur a soft "Rob." before everything went black.***
