Whisky, and booze in general, played a major role in black American music from the earliest days, along with the evil nectar other major topics were women, suffering, money, women, and suffering. These themes became no exception when that music crossed the Straits of Florida, and the Caribbean Sea to be sung by Jamaicans. Shortly after this other psychoactive stimulants began to play a more prominent role in the music.
