Time Marches On, which starts this historical
collection of Derrick Morgan, was previously unreleased and plots the passage
of time as do the other songs found here. By starting during the Ska years,
moving through the Rock Steady period, and ending at Reggae the listener
can not only see the evolution of Jamaican music but see it through the
voice of one of its leading purveyors, Derrick Morgan. The song was based
on a few old folk sayings and filled in by Derrick to create a complete
picture of aging. A few of the proverbs like Saltfish used to shingle house,
which indicates a prosperous time, and Tram car was using for bus, which
implies the old days, probably have never been used in songs before. Or
since. Time Marches On is a great track featuring the backing vocals of
Naomi and the great groove laid down by the Babba Brooks Band. Check out
Babba's scorching trumpet solo as well. During the recording of this song
the Duke became so annoyed at how the drummer was playing on the snare
that he grabbed the drum stick and showed him just how he wanted it played.
