"You can sit up front Grampa. I didn't buy the car for the back seat." Jessy said climbing into the back seat. "What back seat? Deary I think they saw you coming when they sold you this car." Grampa Lawyer teased. "You're right Grampa. Hot wheels for a hottie huh?" Zac shared. "Hey I'm right here. Remember me? Oh how soon they forget." Jessy teased. The three chatted on their way into town, "You two care to come in? We could finish getting to know each other. Maybe have a bite to eat." Grampa Lawyer asked. "I am getting hungry Zac. Can we?" Jessy asked. "Whatever you want babe." Zac answered and the three headed into the house. "Gramma Jane?" Jessy asked stopping in front of the portrait in the entry, staring. "That's her." Grampa Lawyer answered wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "Mom looks so much like her." Jessy gasped. "That she does. There are times it warms my heart looking at Diana, seeing her." Grampa Lawyer shared gently stroking the portrait. "But what about..." Jessy started to ask but stopped. "But what sweetie? It's okay, ask." Grampa Lawyer insisted. "It's just... Grampa doesn't it drive you crazy at times. I mean you lost her and then everytime you look at Mom you're reminded of it. It's got to hurt." Jessy confessed. "You're reight sweetie. There are times when I glance at Diana.. It's like I imagine it's her mother at first and when I realize.. Well sometimes I wonder if it will ever end." Grampa Lawyer shared. "Grampa I didn't know." Zac gasped. "You boys had enough trying to deal with your own loss. And your mother, it would kill her if she knew." Grampa replied. "Grampa I'm so sorry I brought it up." Jessy apologized hugging him tight. "Don't be. Sweetie I've kept this inside for so long now. It's.. it's... well thank you for being there for me, letting me share." Grampa Lawyer replied kissing the top of her head. "I love you for this Jessy." Zac whispered kissing her cheek then hugging her and his grandfather. "Man you both said you were hungry too and now I'm a Jessy sandwich. Grampa where's the kitchen!" Jessy squealed. "You are a delight. I am hungry though. Kitchen is this way." Grampa Lawyer said leading them to the kitchen. "So what do we have to choose from?" Jessy asked sticking her head in the refrigerator, adding, "You did invite us in for a bite to eat right?" "I think it's been awhile since I've been to the grocery store." Grampa Lawyer offered. "Awhile! The expiration date on this is two years ago. No Grampa what good do you think a two year old box of Arm & Hammer is going to do in here?" Jessy asked picking up the box and showing him. "How about I put that in the garbage." Grampa Lawyer suggested. "Good idea. And this. And this." Jessy said pulling out item after item. "So anything left?" Grampa Lawyer asked when she didn't hand out anything else. "For down here. Now the freezer." Jessy said closing one door and opening the other, gasping, "What on earth! How do you know what is what?" Before her were numerous items wrapped in white freezer paper with nothing written on them. "Umm. I don't sweetie. That's why it's in there, I have no idea what it is." Grampa explained. "So what could it be?" Jessy asked picking up a package and feeling it, trying to figure out what it might be. "Well Mrs Edwards brought me a casserole. Mrs White brought me a cake once. The neighbor is always bringing me leftover lazagna and italian bread." Grampa shared. "Hmm. These two feel the same. What do you think honey?" Jessy said handing two packages to Zac. "Yep they feel the same. I'd say Lazagna Jessy." Zac answered. "Hey here's another. You guys feel like lazagna surprise?" Jessy said opening the package in her hands, adding, "Yep it's lazagna. How about yours?" "Two more. Let's eat." Zac exclaimed. "Plates are?" Jessy asked following Grampa to the counter while Zac searched for the bread. "Oops! Cake not bread." Zac announced opening a package. "Dessert huh?" Jessy teased placing the lazagna in the microwave before joining Zac in the search. "You find the bread and I'll take Grampa and go to the corner market." Zac suggested. "Fine by me. Just make sure you buy him something to eat. Grampa how do you survive?" Jessy asked. "I usually go out to eat sweetie. It's no fun eating alone." Grampa answered. "Yeah I guess." Jessy sighed, adding, "You still get some fresh fruit or something for him to snack on." "Got it babe. You'll be okay alone?" Zac asked pecking her on the cheek. "Hmm. I think I'll miss you." Jessy whispered kissing Zac's cheek and hugging him lightly, adding, "You take care of my Grampa." "We won't be long sweetie." Grampa Lawyer said kissing her cheek before leaving. Jessy busied herself fixing the lazagna and bread. While cleaning the cupboards she found some cherry pie-filling and decided to dress up the cake Zac had found. "Oh my. I wonder if I should answer it." Jessy thought of the ringing phone. "Hello Lawyer residence." Jessy answered. "Hey babe. I'm glad you answered." Zac said. "Thank God it's you. I was really debating over answering or not." Jessy confessed. "You knew it was me, that's why you answered." Zac insisted. "So Not!" Jessy squealed then giggled. "I'm hurt. I knew you were thinking about me. That's why I called babe." Zac shared. "How did you know?" Jessy asked seriously before adding, "I was just wondering how long we were going to carry on this charade." "What?" Zac asked. "You know charade. Something that is not what it seems. You know, like me liking you." Jessy answered. "Jessy that's not true." Zac gasped. "Whatch what you're doing there son! Maybe driving and talking to your woman is not a wise idea." Grampa Lawyer screamed. "Oops. Sorry Grampa. It's okay now." Zac replied, returning to the phone, "Jessy you still there." "Zac I'm sorry. Please don't get upset. We can talk later okay?" Jessy replied. "You didn't mean that right?" Zac asked. "No Zac I didn't mean it. I do like you. It's.." Jessy answered not sure what to say. "Jessy it'll be okay. You have to believe me, everything is okay." Zac insisted. "If you say so Zac." Jessy replied. "I do Jessy." Zac shared. "Zac did you call for a reason other than you think I was thinking about you?" Jessy asked. "Oh yeah I did. Grampa wants to know if we want to stay the night since it's getting late. If so we'll get something for breakfast while we're at the market." Zac asked. "Stay the night? Oh Zac this is getting so out of control." Jessy sighed. "Say yes Jessy. I'm sorry I don't mean to pressure you. If you don't want to stay it's okay. Honest Jessy." Zac pleaded. "Oh Zac." Jessy sighed, then answered, "Yeah Zac I'd like to stay the night. You were right, Grampa is really cool. I'd love to spend more time with him." "She loves you Grampa, she'll stay." Zac shared, returning to the phone, "We'll see you soon babe." "Okay." Jessy replied, quickly adding, "Oh Zac I'm serious about you getting some food in here for Grampa. Even the cupboards are full of out dated stuff. He's got to have something to eat when he's home." "I'll make sure Jessy. Thanks for loving him." Zac replied. "Oh that's easy. Like you said he is so cool." Jessy shared, adding, "See you soon." "We won't be long." Zac said hanging up. Jessy returned to the task of cleaning the cupboards and soon was busy cleaning the kitchen. "Whoa. Will you look at that! Sweetie it looks wonderufl in here but you shouldn't have." Grampa Lawyer exclaimed standing in the kitchen doorway. "It's a good thing you stopped there. You get my floor dirty and I'll. Well I'll.. Hmm I'm sure I'll think of something. You just hand me that bag, then go take off those shoes." Jessy warned taking the bags he was holding. "Wow. Looks fantastic doesn't it Grampa." Zac shared looking over his Grampa's shoulder. "Same goes for you. Off with the shoes." Jessy insisted placing the bags on the table and returning to Zac adding, "I'll take those." "There's more." Zac said as they headed back to the car. "I didn't tell you to buy out the store." Jessy teased as they both returned with more bags. "This is all of it." Zac said entering sock footed. "Thanks Zac. I just couldn't believe his cupboards." Jessy whispered standing next to him at the table, adding aloud, "Now help me put all this away." The three stocked the cupboards and loaded the refrigerator. "Now you're ready to invite people in for a bite." Jessy teased placing the last item in the refrigerator. "Now I'm starving. You're a slave driver." Zac complained. "I must admit I am a tad hungry." Grampa Lawyer. "Well it's a good thing because while you were gone I did this." Jessy said opening the oven. "Mmmm looks delicious." Grampa Lawyer exclaimed. "Looks really good Jessy. Here let me help." Zac shared doning an oven mitt and retrieving their plates. The three sat to their meal, chatting and getting to know each other better. "Uhh I'm stuffed. You my dear are a very good cook. I'm so glad you're staying the night so I can get to know you better." Grampa Lawyer said stretching and rubbing his belly. "Don't believe him. He's glad you're staying so you'll be here to make his breakfast." Zac teased. "An added bonus." Grampa Lawyer confessed, adding, "Well the two of you are welcome to the upstairs. Pick your room, I've moved to the small room downstairs." "When did you do that?" Zac asked. "It's been a few months. I just didn't see any reason to stay in that big room by myself. Besides I'm getting old and there are so many steps." Grampa answered with a chuckle. "If I'm only half as spry as you when I'm your age, I'll be thrilled." Jessy insisted. "You do have it going on Grampa." Zac shared. "Well this old got it going on is pooped and going to bed." Grampa Lawyer insisted kissing Jessy's forehead and saying goodnight. "Give me hand cleaning up?" Jessy asked. "Now I know why you're going to bed." Zac teased. "I didn't live all these years and not learn something." Grampa teased as they heard his door shut. "If were having breakfast here, get me a big pan to boil some potatoes in while we clean up." Jessy asked while she filled the sink with soapy water. "Sure Jessy." Zac answered finding a pan, filing it with water before asking, "So you okay with spending the night?" "Yeah. Like I said I really like your Grampa. Zac I'm just afraid.." Jessy started to answer. "Jessy don't worry. You can stay in one room and I'll stay in another. I wouldn't..." Zac interrupted. "I was trying to say, I'm afraid the lie I told is going to come back at us. You know when I pretended to be your girlfriend, I didn't think it would come to this. Zac how did all of this happen." Jessy explained. "Jessy you say it like it's something bad. Nobody will be hurt." Zac insisted. "You can't say that Zac. You just don't know." Jessy sighed as she washed the dishes. "Is this what we could talk about later?" Zac asked picking up a dish towel and drying the dishes. "Yeah Zac. We've pretended to be... Zac you just don't know me. There is so much you don't know." Jessy shared. "So tell me. Tell me everything I need to know Jessy. Tell me how to make you my real girlfriend." Zac asked. "What makes you think you want me to be you're real girlfriend?" Jessy teased making a silly face. "Maybe I'll rethink that." Zac teased back. "How dare you." Jessy exclaimed throwing a handfull of soap bubbles at him. "This means war." Zac said grabbing the sprayer and sprayhing her. The two had their fun then cleaned up the mess they made.
