Something New

Part One

The day was just like any other, boring. No make that Boring in a big way. What would have been the summer of her life, finally meeting her "net" sister in person, traveling to West Virginia and spending a little over two weeks with her and her family was BORING, the worst summer of her life. She had opted not to show at the fair this year and told absolutely everyone she was going, so none of her friends called or invited her to any of the happenings. No one she babysat for called because they all thought she was gone and she was too embarassed to let anyone know her plans had changed because she acted more like a two year old the night before the last day of school. If only she hadn't lost control and mouthed off, pushing Momma to ground her from the internet and cancel her trip. "Unfair" Jessy thought staring at the bare walls of her room which had once housed her Hanson collection. She looked at the boxes in the closet, realizing she hadn't a peaceful nights sleep since she took them all down and boxed them up and put them away. Hanson is the reason she found her Sister Chele, they had met in a Hanson Chat Room on the internet the day after Jessy's thirteenth birthday, when she went on line for the first time with the webtv she got for her birthday. Their pictures and music reminded her that she wasn't going to meet Chele, be able to finally hug her, all because she just didn't stop with loud talk, loud music, stop being a pain. Jessy argued with the DJ on the radio who refered to BackStreet Boys as a band. "Band, a band has instruments not a tape player. If they're a band then it's "Milli Vanilli" time. God why do I listen to you." Jessy grumbled turning the radio dial to a Country and Western station. As she listened to the song telling of a heavy heart and putting it all down on paper being what turned her life around, Jessy headed to her desk and pulled out paper and pen. She stared at the blank page for the longest time and then she started writing. "I can't believe it." Jessy said in shock, she did feel so much better but was having a hard time accepting the fact that of all the people in the world she could have chosen to write to, the letter read, "Dear Zac:" . Jessy reread her letter checking spelling and reviewing content and before she could talk herself out of it, she addressed an envelope and enclosed a s.a.s.e. and headed to the mailbox. "Safest person to write to, he'll never read it in a million years." Jessy said to herself on the way back from the mailbox deep in thought. The car horn startled her and she turned to see their mailman at the end of the driveway, "Hey Jessy, you looking for this?" Al said retrieving her letter and holding today's mail in his outstretched hand. "Morning. I guess I can take that. Have a nice day." Jessy said heading his way, taking their mail and waving as he headed down the street. A couple of weeks passed and after grocery shopping, her mother gave her a bunch of gummi feet with a little note 'For the next time you feel like putting your foot in your mouth, Love Momma" and without think she wrote Zac, explaining and sharing a foot. Then a week later they had driven to Indiana to visit friends and on the trip home they stopped in a out of the way, small town convenience store and as she was checking out the candy aisle, there they were, gummi tongues. Jessy started laughing at the images of swapping tongues in her head and immediately picked up two. Later that night Jessy wrote to Zac again, complaining of her mother's archaic dating rules, no dating until age fourteen and then ask but no guarantees of going. "Man Zac I'm only 22 days younger than you, I bet you get to date. Not me I'm so tired of explaining my no answers. Why'd I ever have to grow boobs?" She shared how since the fourth grade she'd been asked out and now going into the eighth grade, she felt she was the only person who hadn't dated and felt so left out. Guys and dating is all her friends talk about and they all know she can't date, how unfair. Jessy asked Zac if he'd swap tongues with her, the gummi ones, and send back a little note saying so. She swore never to reveal his identity, she'd just say Zac, you don't know him, met him when we were out of town. More weeks passed and Jessy had given up hope of ever hearing from Zac. School started and Jessy was back in the same old routine before long, same group of friends admiring the same school hottie to pass the day, after school collect the mail, take care of her borthers, and go on line. Jessy's new goal was to fly over to West Virginia during Christmas Break or next Spring Break to meet her sister Chele so she was doing everything possible, even being nice to her brothers, to make it to her goal. She raced from the bus stop to their mailbox and flew towards the house still trying to beat her youngest brother Sam. At the door, she put her key in the door and as she was pulling the key out, Sam scooted under her arm and pushed his way into the house declaring himself the winner. "Sam the winner whoopie. What do you want for a snack, chose now or I'll decide." Jessy asked as Josh entered finally. They were already in front of the television watching cartoons so Jessy zapped a plate of nachos for each and delivered them to the living room before returning to the mail, to sort through it. "Bill, mom, mom, me, magazine, junk mail, meeee. Oh my god." Jessy squealed looking to the front room to see if the boys had heard. Luckily the TV was blaring and they were unaware of what was about to happpen. Mail sorted, Jessy quickly gathered hers, her eyes never leaving the large envelope with her own handwriting on it. She rushed to her room, closing the door, grabbing the remote to turn on the CD player, filling her room with the sounds of Hanson, it was all she listened to. Jessy dropped her school bag and other mail on the desk, slipped off her shoes, and flopped onto her bed surrounded by all the posters of Hanson. Looking at her favorite poster, "You wrote me back, Thanks Zac." Jessy said smiling at the smiling picture of Zac as she opened the envelope and dumping it out onto her bed. She looked at the tongue and immediately picked it up placing it on top of the cardboard mailing envelope it came in while staring at two folded letters and two of her self addressed stamped envelopes. She finally made her choice of the two, unfolding it to reveal the little note she had written him to date and sign as proof of swapping tongues and on the bottom at the signature line, "Jessy, I don't think the girls will believe you if this is in your handwriting by the way you write real nice, so I rewrote it for you, hope you can pull one over on them, Zac." Jessy quickly picked up the page revealing Zac's handwritten page, stating that in early August he ran into Jessy and her family and they two managed to spend some time together and "after talking for a couple of hours, well you know what you'd do, so we swapped tongues. Yeah I know she can't date for a while yet so please don't let her Momma know, I mean she was right there when we did and she doesn't know, so please don't let it slip. Zac" Jessy read aloud. "Oh my god, I don't believe it." Jessy cried as she started to shake and 'With You In Your Dreams' started. "No I can't." Jessy said grabbing the remote and resetting for 'Gimme Some Lovin' as she wiped her eyes and bounced on her bed. She picked up the gummi tongue and placed the pages she had read down and placed it on top as she reached for the other letter. "Dear Jessy, Man you sound like you are so much FUN and you enjoy life. I was blown away by the foot and when the tongues came, you had me in stitches. Your description of school and all your friends, made me think I was missing something by not going to public schools, but with the band that makes it totally impossible now. It must be nice to have so many longtime friends that aren't family like you said. After I stopped laughing over the tongue and foot, I remembered seeing another envelope from you and went back to find it. Man I looked for hours, I even asked my Mom to help me, so did my Dad. It took about three hours before Mom finally came up with it, she is still dying to know why it was important. I haven't told her or even my brothers, I guess I'm afraid they'll tease. Anyway, your first letter, Man Jessy what a bummer. I'm so sorry. I know what you're saying about once it started, you couldn't stop. I get that way sometimes, a lot when we were touring. Man all I ever heard was Zac that's enough. But like you sometimes, I just can't stop it, like my mouth has a mind of it's own and I'm along for the ride. It's kind of embarassing when there's a camera rolling. Well being a fan, you've probably seen all my finer moments. That's not fair, I haven't seen yours, just read it. (I'm pouting) Man I've wrote a lot and I don't like to write. Sure hope you can read this. Jessy do you think you could write me back? I'd really like to hear from you. If so send it to this address, so I make sure I get it right away, okay? Your friend, Zac."
