July 1 - Float Rite Park Day number Seventeen at the Ozzfest. Today's show was a blast. With a crowd well over 20,000, the Ozzfest got started off with a bang. Most people were able to make it into the venue early, but some got stuck in the annual gridlock into the venue. Those that made it into the venue early were lucky enough not to miss any of the great bands, such as second stage openers, Apartment 26. Today was the second live webcast of the Ozzfest as well, and surely a great mass of fans across the globe were able to enjoy the festivities at home (or work!). At the gig, this venue was strange in relation to those of the rest of the tour. Not only does Float-Rite Park hold the most people, but there are also no seats and an oddly-graded hill. This meant that the mainstage bands were able to play in front of a real pit for the first time. System of a Down took advantage of this and played what they felt was one of their best sets all tour. During one part, Shavo, the guitarist, went crowd-surfing while still playing his guitar, and near the end of their set drummer John removed his shorts and played in the nude. After the set, John proceeded to walk up to the microphone in the front of the stage, still naked, and yell "GET NAKED!" several times before leaving the stage. During the day there were some on-and-off showers, but for the most part it was a dry day. In addition to the irregular rain showers, this also was a homecoming of sorts for Slipknot. Even though they hail from Des Moines, Iowa, this was one of the closest shows to their home, and the fans in the crowd went insane for Slipknot. Many of the fans brandished their own homemade masks, some mimicking the Slipknot masks, some showing their own twists. One person, possibly a Slipknot fan, vomited near the end of their set and then passed out his own pool of vomit. Coincidence? Accident? Or Slipknot-induced Ralphing? The investigation continues... Capping off the night were Rob Zombie and the unstoppable warhorse, Black Sabbath. Rob Zombie reveled in the throngs of Zombie-heads going bonkers-mad in the general admission field, while Ozzy and crew rocked majestically, and with surging decibels flowing all in attendance were reminded that the Book of Heavy Rock began with four average dudes who didn't follow the rules to get what they wanted. Long live Sabbath! After Sabbath, the Float-Rite crew lit fireworks backstage that fans could see from the field. It was truly a great ending to a wonderful Ozzfest show.
