PART V(a): PROMOTIONAL MUSIC VIDEOS
STATE TROOPER
The band appears on a small stage performing the song; images of a bed-sheet with excerpts of the lyrics to `Sun Comes Up, It's Tuesday Morning' are edited in. The picture in this video is purposely distorted by film-scratches and video interference.
SWEET JANE (Canadian Version)
In this video, the band is on a small stage in an "after-hours" bar setting (the chairs are sitting up on their tables). Towards the end is a shot of the band sitting around in a setting similar to the cover of "The Trinity Session".
SWEET JANE (U.S. Version)
This time the band is filmed in a darkly-lit room with shadows cast over them; images of hair, chains, and rose petals on a pillow are edited in.
MISGUIDED ANGEL (edit, without the "sister" verse)
This video is predominantly made-up of conceptual footage of a boxer and his young son (whatever that has to do with the song...); the band, including Jeff, Jaro and Kim, are mostly filmed in silhouettes with the exception of Margo.
BLUE MOON REVISITED (SONG FOR ELVIS)
This is a simple performance-video of the band, including Jeff, shot entirely in brown tones.
SUN COMES UP, IT'S TUESDAY MORNING ("clean" version)
This one is made-up of conceptual footage of a woman alone in her apartment. There are several images indicating the absence of a man as well as a bed-sheet with the song's lyrics printed on it (as was seen in the video for `State Trooper'). Scenes of Margo miming the words are edited in with occasional shots of the other band members. The
opening and closing shots are of a pair of men's shoes sitting next to a bed.
(Note: Margo has stated in concert that the girl who is ice skating in this video is their sister. I may be remembering this wrong but I think the only person skating in the video is the main character who, in one part of the video, is seen sliding around outside in the snow or perhaps an icy sidewalk. Though the woman is blonde, there is a certain family
resemblance, perhaps this is Calli (who someone mentioned was an actress in a Canadian soap opera*?*)
`CAUSE CHEAP IS HOW I FEEL
In this video the band, including Jaro, portray the house-band at a couples all-night dance marathon; there are several bit-actors in this video portraying contestants, judges, etc.
ROCK AND BIRD
It starts out with the comedian Steven Wright sitting at a piano on a large stage. Margo walks out and you see 2 people ask if this is the last one,so it's like a tryout. The song starts and it's the Bruce Hornsby piano version of the song! It goes about halfway with just Margo and Steven "playing" the piano. Eventually you see the piano is playing by itself, and Steven trying to play along. The 2nd half the rest of the band joins her and they finish the song. [description by Rod]
SOUTHERN RAIN (edit, doesn't have the middle guitar solo)
This is probably my favourite Junkies video; it follows the song pretty closely and centers around a young couple's move from a small town (Macon, GA?) to the big city (West L.A.?). The cool part of this video is that it's done entirely in a series of vignettes where the actors are standing perfectly still and the settings alone tell the story: he
cheats on her, she returns home, he chases her, and there's a happy ending. The band is edited-in performing the song on what appears to be the landing at a train station.
A HORSE IN THE COUNTRY
I have not seen this one but it is reported to be just one long shot of a horse with Margo miming the lyrics; does anyone have a copy of this?
ANNIVERSARY SONG
Only Margo appears in this video, which was produced by Worst Case Scenario Inc and directed by David Houghton and Brian Howlett (completed on 2/18/94). While Margo mimes the lyrics, text is displayed on the screen showing the names of famous couples. Granted, this might not sound like the most elaborate concept for a video but it is done in a very clever and, often times, humorous way (Henry VIII's wives come and go, Camilla nudges out Diana and Madonna is partnered with... Madonna).
THE POST
This is a pretty weird concept video filmed in black & white with a several odd people (possibly mental patients) painting ceilings, wearing mining lanterns, playing with caged birds and whacking exploding pinatas. One woman, dressed in a feathered boa, shares the miming duties with Margo who is the only bandmember making an appearance (Margo is looking mighty fine, I must say...). This video can be found on the April 1994 edition of
"Rock Music Monthly Alternative Releases", so check the music-section of your used video stores.
A COMMON DISASTER
The band performs the song in a small shack while outside the wind blows and lightning flashes. A tornado picks up the shack and when they walk out at the end of the video, we see a pair of legs wearing candy-striped stockings and ruby-slippers pinned under the shack (ala "The Wizard of Oz").
ANGEL MINE
I've never seen this one either, but it is a promo for the movie "The Truth About Cats and Dogs", of which `Angel Mine' appears in the soundtrack. Actress/Comedienne Janeane Garofalo appears in the video which (according to a news report that was released prior to the actual filming of the video) was recorded at The El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. She plays a "ticket-taker" who turns out to be a guardian angel to the people sitting in the seats; the band performs the song on stage.
