MILWAUKEE - Local businessman Al Delvecchio, owner of the popular teen hangout Al's Drive-In, formally endorsed The Returnables for the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, adding momentum if not political prestige to a campaign that until this point had been beneath the national radar.
Delvecchio said The Returnables "are good boys who tip well. That can't be downplayed in today's economy." He also added that the Chicago rockers were the only Democratic candidates who have personally performed in his restaurant. "If (local musician) Chachi Arcola's band was running, well, it might've been a different story."
The endorsement was not the Kenosha native's first foray into politics. Delvecchio's restaurant served as the unofficial headquarters of the Save Inspiration Point movement, successfully thwarting the city of Milwaukee's attempt to build an expressway through a popular heavy-petting destination.
