If there is a single person that was responsible for my involvement with rock 'n' roll, it was BILL HALEY, the First Rock 'n' Roll Superstar. This is a personal tribute to the man that helped shape my career, with his joyful and juvenile sounds!
As a fourteen-year old who already loved Pop music (I had been a "Big Bands" fan during my pre-teen years), my first contact with Bill's unique brand of music was unforgettable. Every weekend, when the new edition of the "Hit Parade" would come on the radio, I was there, waiting to learn what the new ditties were. On this particular week, when the MC announced the newest Top Ten entry, "Rock Around The Clock" with Bill Haley and His Comets, I was somewhat unaware of what was comin'... And then, the blast! "ONE, TWO, THREE O'CLOCK, FOUR O'CLOCK ROCK!" .....WOW!!! What was this?! Bill's voice came through the radio speakers unbelievably loud, the beat was as solid as a heavy heartbeat and the whole rockin' arrangement sent me to Seventh Heaven! This novel composition, written by Jimmy De Knight and Max C. Freedman, as I would later learn, was definitely out of this world. I had never heard anything like it before! I was hooked... and could barely wait until the next morning to go to the local record stores with hopes of finding this particular platter. Which I eventually did! You will surely enjoy seeing the original releases in the U.S. and México of this legendary recording, on the 45 rpm single and EP formats:
Now, here are the original releases on 78 rpm, 10" and...
...the 12" album (to my taste, the Best Rock 'N' Roll Album ever), which Bill autographed for me!
The next Monday, back at high school, I could only think of communicating to my colleagues the great news. "Hey, did you hear the new record by BILL HALEY & HIS COMETS?"
