INT. BEDROOM - AFTERNOON A room owned by a girl in her late teens, walls covered with posters and pictures. On the bed sits an open duffel bag stuffed full of clothes. In the corner of the room is a wooden dresser, upon which rests a small television set. On the television screen: video-taped footage of dozens of giant spaceships in the atmosphere, shown repeatedly from various different angles. The images are shaky and difficult to make out, and in the top right corner of the screen the words "RECORDED EARLIER" appear. At the bottom of the screen, a title reading "ATTACK FROM ABOVE" appears, and just beneath that a scrolling title listing rescue stations. Over these images a nervous female newscaster tries to remain calm as she reads her report. FEMALE NEWSCASTER It's hard for us here to believe what we're reporting to you, but it does seem to be a fact. Now, police and military had warned all civilians to remain in their homes until the severity of the situation could be determined. This situation has now changed. MARY CRANE, a sixteen-year-old girl, wanders into the room with a pile of clothes in one arm and a portable phone in the other hand. She tosses the clothes into her duffel bag, then begins wandering around the room in an obvious rush. She dials a number, but there's only a busy signal. MARY drops the phone down on her bed and starts going through her drawers and shelves, picking small important items like a lighter, her spare glasses, feminine products, etc. She occasionally glances at the television. FEMALE NEWSCASTER Civil defense machinery has been organized to provide rescue stations with food, shelter, and protection by armed national guardsmen. We'll be constantly repeating the national list given to us by officials, but we recommend you stay tuned to your local radio station to find the rescue station nearest you. Make your way to that location as soon as possible. CUT TO: INT. KITCHEN A typical farm house kitchen. A table sits in the middle of the room with four chairs around it. On the counter sits a small television set, which is turned on. On the screen, a newscast plays, but on a different station from the one seen earlier. A male newscaster nervously delivers a somber newscast. Clearly a local television station, the left side of screen is cluttered with a list of rescue stations. MALE NEWSCASTER ...called this afternoon by the president, after meeting with UN officials. Since then, this conference of the presidential cabinet, the FBI, the joint chiefs of staff, and the CIA has not produced any public information... A young man named TODD has been watching the newscast. He is not much older than MARY, and has a less-than-impressive physique. He rubs his forehead as the severity of the situation starts to sink in. He sighs before walking over to the sink, opening the cupboard beneath it and getting down on his knees. He pulls out a large, empty cardboard box and places it on the table. MALE NEWSCASTER ...but they have stressed that all citizens remain calm. Police and ambulance services are still operational, but authorities are pleading to the public not to call except in cases of severe emergencies. Apparently they're straining to meet demands as it is. TODD begins to root through the cupboards of the kitchen, grabbing canned food, batteries, a flashlight, and first aid supplies, then tossing them into the cardboard box. The television signal starts to fade and interference starts to get the better part of the picture. The male newscaster's voice is occasionally interrupted by static. TODD looks at the TV and shuts his eyes. He's worried. BACK TO: INT. BEDROOM MARY stuffs one last hand-full of clothes into the duffel bag. She looks up at the television screen. FEMALE NEWSCASTER Military officials have not made public their plans to deal with the situation. However, there was a release from the Pentagon when the first ship entered our atmosphere almost two days ago. It stated that they were prepared, if necessary, for an offensive attack. Since then, over three thousand ships have... MARY shakes her head, then zips up the duffel bag. She slings it over her shoulder and walks out of the room. INT. KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER MARY walks into the kitchen and places her duffel bag on the table. She looks over at TODD, who has his arms filled with canned food. As his eyes meet with hers, he stops briefly. He walks up beside her, tossing his cans into the cardboard box, then grabs her hand. They smile at each other, but MARY's attention is quickly diverted by the television screen. The picture on it hasn't gotten any better. MARY (worried) The signal's starting to fade. TODD There's a rescue station just outside of Chatsworth. I think it's the closest one. MARY squeezes TODD's hand tighter as she looks over the supplies on the table. MARY Good. I think we've got everything. TODD It shouldn't take us more than twenty minutes to get there. Buff's on his way, I called him about fifteen minutes ago. MARY rolls her eyes. TODD (defensive) Look, I don't like him much either, but he's the only guy I know left with a car. MARY I know, I know. I don't care who takes us, I just want to get out of here. On the television screen, the interference fades a little, so a few more images of the sky filled with spaceships can barely be seen. CUT TO: EXT. MARY'S HOUSE - LATER A fairly large farm house, surrounded by a thick forest of trees. The home is very secluded. The leaves on the trees have turned gorgeous shades of orange and red. A weather-beaten gray car pulls into the driveway and stops. A seventeen-year-old named BUFF steps out of the driver's seat. He is slightly overweight and wears glasses, and is obviously a loser of the highest degree. BUFF walks up to the front door, upon which hangs a small sign which reads "The CRANES". He rings the doorbell. INT. HALLWAY MARY opens the door and smiles as she sees BUFF standing there. Despite MARY's somber expression, BUFF gives a goofy smile. BUFF Ready? MARY Just a second. MARY turns her back to BUFF and walks back into the kitchen. INT. KITCHEN MARY walks into the room and looks at TODD. MARY He's here. TODD picks up the cardboard box and walks towards the front door. He leans in close to MARY, whispering in her ear before walking out the door. TODD Please be nice. It's just half an hour. MARY smiles as TODD leaves. She picks up the duffel bag, and places a hand-written note on the table. She then walks over to the telephone, leans over the answering machine, and pushes the tiny record button. MARY Mom, Dad, Todd and I have gone to the rescue station near Chatsworth. Once we get there we're not leaving until I hear from you again, so hopefully we'll meet you there. (nervous pause) I love you. She lifts her finger off the button, slings the duffel bag over her shoulder, and walks out of the room. CUT TO: EXT. MARY'S HOUSE - MOMENTS LATER MARY locks the front door behind her as she, TODD, and BUFF walk towards the small gray car. They get inside and drive off fast. DISSOLVE TO: I/E. BUFF'S CAR - RURAL BACK-ROADS - LATER Despite all that's happening, the road BUFF's car travels seems quite serene. Huge maple trees hang over the highway, shielding the sky from view. The leaves on the trees are thousands of different spectacular shades of red, orange, and yellow. The highway seems to stretch on forever, weaving through the forest, but BUFF's gray vehicle is the only car on the road. The inside of BUFF's car is rather dirty, as a teenager's car should be. It is clearly very worn. BUFF drives, while TODD and MARY sit in the back, with MARY resting her head on TODD's shoulder. TODD Pretty nice set of wheels you've got here, Mustang Sally. BUFF It's my mom's. TODD I thought it looked familiar. MARY hits TODD in the arm. MARY Is your mom gonna care that you took her car? BUFF I haven't seen her in days. She works at the hospital, and they're not letting anybody leave. There is an awkward pause. No one seems sure what to say, and MARY seem to be growing more uncomfortable. MARY Buff, do you mind if a open a window? It stinks in here. BUFF Sure. TODD flashes a dirty look at MARY, but she flashes one right back at him as she rolls down the window. TODD Thanks again for the ride, Buff. We really appreciate this. BUFF No problem. BUFF shows a slight grin, but his face again turns somber. There are only a few sounds: the hum of the motor, things jostling in the trunk, clutter on the dashboard and on the floor tossing slightly. MARY seems deep in thought while TODD stares at the floor. As the car takes a curve, a Yoda PEZ dispenser rolls out from under the passenger seat into TODD's feet. TODD reflects on it a moment before kicking back under the seat. BUFF You know, I really can't wait to see what these things look like. They could have anything. Tentacles, hooves, horns, tails, claws, fur, pointy ears, ESP powers, anything. (beat, then to TODD) Did you ever read Chariots of the Gods? TODD rolls his eyes. He points towards the tape deck on the dashboard. TODD Does that thing work? BUFF forces a smile. BUFF Good idea. BUFF pulls a cassette up off the floor and slips it in. Music begins to play. MARY watches as the trees pass by outside the car. The road is still remarkably desolate. MARY Are you sure this is the right way? BUFF (defensive) Of course this is the right way. There's only one way to get to Chatsworth. MARY All right, but I haven't seen anyone else on this road. BUFF (more defensive) Well I don't know how else you expect me to get there! TODD leans forward and gestures for MARY and BUFF to calm down. No one seems to notice as the music on the tape begins to slow. MARY I'm just saying you'd think we'd see some military or a sign pointing the way or something... BUFF (still more defensive) Mary... The music coming from the radio dies completely, and so does the motor. Everyone in the car goes silent. All lights and dials on the dashboard go dead. The car rolls to a stop at the edge of the road, never again to move from that spot. MARY leans her head back against the seat, rolls her eyes and exhales loudly. TODD What happened? BUFF I don't know. BUFF turns the key and nothing happens. The engine doesn't even make the noises of attempting to turn over. The car is officially dead. BUFF Nothing. BUFF, TODD and MARY step out of the car. The tired old vehicle rests at the side of the barren road. A diner can be seen in the distance. MARY leans against the car to stretch her legs as TODD and BUFF lift the hood of the car. TODD Well... BUFF The engine's still there, I can tell you that much. (to TODD) Do you know anything about cars? TODD Nope. BUFF Me neither. BUFF closes the hood of the car. TODD So what do we do now? BUFF Anybody have a cell phone? MARY Not with me. TODD Me neither. I use to think they were impractical. BUFF Well, Todd, is there any way your parents could... TODD (very frustrated) Dude, my parents are out west! The airlines are shut down. Why the hell do you think I'm getting a ride with you?! Fucking idiot. BUFF Alright, sorry. BUFF rubs the back of his neck, deep in thought. His feelings are merely bruised. BUFF Well, we could wait here for someone to go by. TODD Buff, we haven't seen anybody else on this road yet. No one's going to come by. MARY (to BUFF) Is there gas in the car? BUFF Yes, Mary, there's plenty of gas. MARY Okay, okay, just trying to help. TODD (to BUFF) We can't just wait here. BUFF (defensive) Well, what do you think we should do, then? Why should I know what to do? There is a silence as TODD rubs his chin and scans the horizon. TODD We could walk to the diner at the county line. I bet it's not more than a ten minute walk. BUFF shakes his head. TODD looks over at MARY. Looking into her eyes, he pleads for her to agree with him. She gives a reluctant smile. TODD (to BUFF) There's got to be somebody around there. The rescue station isn't much further. MARY walks around to the trunk of the car, and TODD follows. BUFF looks up at them and reluctantly follows. He pulls out his keys and opens the trunk. TODD grabs his backpack, while MARY grabs her duffel bag. BUFF looks longingly at the cardboard box filled with non-perishable food. TODD (to MARY) We'll be fine. We can come back and get the rest when we know it's safe, okay? MARY Whatever. MARY closes the trunk. BUFF Just let me lock it up. BUFF locks all the doors on the car and puts the keys in his pocket. He then pulls a vial of nasal spray out of his pocket, tilts his head back, and sprays it once into each nostril. He, TODD and MARY walk off down the road. They march silent and alone through the glorious leaves of orange and red. The area is deadly quiet, there is not even the sound of birds or insects. An icy wind howls occasionally, but otherwise they are clearly alone. CUT TO: EXT. BEEKMAN'S DINER - LATER The group of three walk towards a small diner at a crossroad in the highway. The diner sits beside a small two-floor motel, near the crest of a large hill. Both the diner and the motel are quite modest, obviously a family-owned business, most likely frequented by truckers and farmers. Two large gas tanks rest in front of the diner. At rest beside one of the tanks is a muddy pick-up truck with it's driver's side door wide open. There's a bumper sticker on the truck which reads "Register My Gun? No Damn Way!" There are two large windows beside the front entrance, and on the roof sits a large, unlit neon sign reading "BEEKMAN'S DINER". The sign in the window reads "CLOSED". The diner is lifeless, deserted. The stoplights high above the intersection swing in the breeze, silent and idle. As BUFF, TODD and MARY approach, the only sound that can be heard is the squeaking of metal as the stoplight sways. Any semblance of excitement drains from the three teens faces as they realize the diner is lifeless. Together they walk towards the front door. BUFF Great. There's nobody here. TODD notices something on the ground, just off to the side, and walks towards it. It appears to be blood. TODD Uh... guys? He turns to see that BUFF and MARY have already headed inside. CUT TO: INT. BEEKMAN'S DINER A honky-tonk redneck diner, with walls decorated with stuffed fish and a portrait of Stompin' Tom Connors. Many of the tables have been overturned, and the floor is scattered with a variety of trash. The diner is in great disorder. MARY slowly peers around the room, trying to take in all the chaos. BUFF immediately notices that the register is both open and empty. He walks around behind the counter, but after a glance he stops dead in his tracks. BUFF Oh man. MARY What? Curious, MARY walks over to BUFF so she can look behind the counter. There she sees the body of a dead man, the cashier, the result of being shot in the chest. The body rests amongst a pile of canned food and broken dishes. MARY slowly stumbles backwards, away from the body, with her hand over her mouth. She's too shocked to scream. BUFF just stares at the body, dumbfounded. He looks up at the candy shelf and helps himself to a bag of chips. He opens it and starts to eat. BACK TO: EXT. BEEKMAN'S DINER On the ground TODD notices a faint trail of blood that circles around the corner of the diner. Curious but cautious, TODD follows the trail around the corner. He finds nothing but a large icebox chained to the side of the building. The trail of blood, however, continues around the next corner. TODD slowly creeps towards that corner, until a large pool of blood and a leg come into view. The rest of the hideous sight is obscured by the corner of the building. TODD slowly turns the corner and finds the mangled corpse of an adult man, lying in a pool of blood, covered in scratches and missing an arm. It appears almost as if this man were ripped apart by a lion. In the man's remaining arm rests a shotgun, the barrel end of which is horribly bent. Numerous small bills are scattered amongst the body, some caked in blood while others float in the breeze like leaves. Clearly, this is the man who robbed the diner and shot the cashier. TODD gasps at first, but after overcoming his initial shock he finds that he cannot take his eyes off the corpse. TODD extends his arm and leans in closer to the body to ensure that it is, in fact, dead. His hand gets close to the body but never touches it. As he does this, far off in the wooded background something seems to be moving closer. While difficult to distinguish, it appears to be a hideous gray beast, slightly larger than an adult male, walking tremendously slow. TODD walks back around the diner without noticing the creature. BACK TO: INT. BEEKMAN'S DINER MARY stands paralyzed with fear as BUFF fills his pockets with bags of chips. He either doesn't notice or doesn't care about MARY's obvious fear, as he reaches into the fridge behind the counter and pulls out a bottle of pop. He walks over to one of the tables, sits down, and begins to drink it slowly without muttering a word. He gestures to MARY, offering her a drink, but she shakes her head. MARY starts to take a few steps backward, knocking into the wall. Suddenly, a small picture falls to the ground with a loud crash as the glass in the frame shatters. MARY jumps and lets out a tiny scream. BUFF looks up. The room seems to freeze for a moment as BUFF and MARY regain their composure. BUFF chuckles to himself softly before taking another sip of his drink. Suddenly, there is a noise which seems to be coming from the back of the diner. The sound is that of a faint clawing noise. BUFF and MARY look at each other. BACK TO: EXT. BEEKMAN'S DINER TODD walks towards the abandoned pick-up truck and looks through it. There are no keys in the ignition. In fact, there appears to be nothing of any value, only a few Waylon Jennings tapes scattered on the floor. TODD opens the glove compartment but finds it empty. Under the seat, however, he notices a heavy metal crowbar. BACK TO: INT. BEEKMAN'S DINER BUFF stands up and starts to walk towards the back of the diner. MARY motions for him to stop, but is too frightened to say anything. He slowly pulls the door leading to the kitchen open. Frightened, MARY picks up a baseball bat she sees lying on the floor. INT. BEEKMAN'S DINER - KITCHEN The room consists of little more than a sink, a grill, and a deep fryer. A wide variety of pots and pans hang from the ceiling, while the shelves are stocked with spices, condiments, and utensils. The kitchen is extremely claustrophobic. In the back corner is a large metal door, clearly marked as an emergency exit. In the center of the door is a window paned with wire-glass, which has been painted over black. BUFF picks a butcher's knife up off the counter. He creeps towards a large metal door, from which soft scratching noises can be heard. It's shut tight. BUFF is hesitant to get close. BUFF Todd? There is no response, but the clawing stops suddenly. BUFF steps back slightly, picking a huge butcher knife up off the counter. He clutches it in his hands, but he'd clearly be a feeble attack for any foe. Suddenly, the huge metal door is slammed like it was struck by a rampaging bull. There is a ferocious alien roar. Startled, BUFF jumps backwards, knocking over some pots and pans, which crash on the floor. BUFF tries to scamper out of the room as the beast furiously tries to claw its way through the door. BACK TO: EXT. BEEKMAN'S DINER TODD hears the commotion. He picks up the crowbar, and sits up. Through the windshield he sees something, about 100 yards in front of him and slowly approaching. A massive gray hulking beast, even from a distance it's clear the monster more than doubles TODD's body mass. The beast has incredibly long arms, as it's knuckles nearly drag along the ground. It staggers forward as though wearing lead boots. It's slimy body is covered in fur, and it has a jaw big enough to crush a bowling ball. TODD is frozen for moment, but composes himself and gets out of the truck. He holds the crowbar like a bat, holding steady as the monster slowly approaches. Without moving, TODD turns towards the diner and starts making exaggerated, nervous motions for MARY and BUFF to get out of there. The beast approaches ever so slowly. INT. BEEKMAN'S DINER MARY is pressed up against the wall in fear. Through the window she sees TODD yelling for her to move. BUFF comes stumbling out the kitchen door and slams it behind him. He grabs a table and tosses it in front of the door. Behind it, the sound of the beast grows ever more ferocious. BUFF runs for the front door. BUFF (to MARY) Let's go! EXT. BEEKMAN'S DINER TODD grows more worried as the monster in front of him gets closer. BUFF comes running out of the door, then suddenly stops dead in his tracks. TODD sees this and spins around to see a massive, slimy gray beast directly behind him. The backpack is ripped off TODD's back. In an instant, TODD smashes the crowbar against the monster's head three times. Teeth, claws, green blood, and slimy skin can only be made out in instances. Screams and roars echo loudly. The monster falls backwards against the hood of the pick-up truck and falls down beside it. BACK TO: INT. BEEKMAN'S DINER MARY stares out the window as the battle unfolds. From her perspective the alien is obscured by the front of the pick-up truck, and only huge, hairy feet poke out amidst a large puddle of green blood. As the legs squirm slightly, TODD repeatedly slams the crowbar down onto the beast with all his force. Spurts of green blood splash up at his face. MARY cringes at the sight, but she cannot ignore the sounds of the beast clawing at the kitchen door. MARY collects herself, and holds the baseball bat out in front of her like a sword. She walks out of the diner. EXT. BEEKMAN'S DINER MARY walks out and stops beside BUFF. As she quickly looks around her, the expression on her face turns to suddenly panic. MARY (screaming) Todd! Get back here now! TODD takes one final swing at the beast. Satisfied it's dead, he looks up and wipes his brow. His jaw starts to drop as he starts to see three, five, eight monsters approaching them from different directions. A few let out deep roars. TODD runs towards MARY and BUFF, then starts pushing them away from the diner. Before anyone can say anything, one of the monstrous aliens comes around the corner of the diner with its arms outstretched. The beast flashes it's enormous, razor-sharp teeth. Out of pure fear, MARY spins around and clocks the creature square in the jaw with her baseball bat. The monster is knocked backwards through the front window of the diner. The beast starts to get back on its feet. As the creature sweeps its arm, it's clear the incredible reach these monsters have, but they walk no faster than a zombie. The three teens run towards the motel. EXT. KEY MOTEL A cheap and unattractive motel, there are twenty rooms: ten line the first floor, and ten on the second floor. An exterior stairwell is the only way to reach the second floor. TODD runs up to one of the doors on the bottom floor, only to find it locked. MARY and BUFF scan the horizon, and there are beasts approaching from every direction. Luckily, they have time on their side: the monsters are painfully slow. The closest one is still some 50 yards away. TODD There's got to be a master key. Check the office. MARY and BUFF both nod and run into the office. TODD turns around, tightly clutching the crowbar and ready for anything. CUT TO: INT. KEY MOTEL - OFFICE The office is empty. Other than a telephone, a wooden chair, and a few tourist brochures, the room is unadorned. BUFF hops over the desk and finds the master key hanging on a small hook. He hands it to MARY. Together they run out of the office. BACK TO: EXT. KEY MOTEL - MOMENTS LATER TODD stands just outside the office, holding the crowbar high in the air. He is extremely tense as the two aliens start getting dangerously close. MARY and BUFF come running out of the office. TODD Use one of the rooms on the second floor. They're less likely to get up there. TODD extends his arm and begins swinging the crowbar madly. BUFF runs for the stairwell, but MARY stays closely behind. As the aliens close in, they turn and run up the stairwell. Reaching the top, BUFF starts to overturn a vending machine. MARY and TODD quickly join in, as they push the huge machine into the stairwell, blocking it. One of the aliens reaches the bottom of the stairwell, but instead of climbing the stairs it climbs up the wall. The creature's long arms give it a great reach, and the claws are particularly good for grappling any surface. The three teens run to the door of a room at the far end of the second floor. BUFF fumbles with keys in the lock. MARY nervously looks over the railing, and she can see dozens of these creatures milling about. BUFF It's the wrong key! TODD What? BUFF It's the wrong fucking key! TODD pushes BUFF aside and forces the door open with the crowbar. Once it opens, BUFF pushes him aside and runs into the room. INT. ROOM #21 The empty room is very dark, but it isn't hard to make out the fact that it is cheaply furnished. There is one large bed, a small television sitting atop a dresser, a couch and a door leading to the bathroom. A curtain covers a small window on the far wall. BUFF runs in and immediately lifts the bed up on its side. BACK TO: EXT. KEY MOTEL One of the beasts climbs up the railing of the motel, then reaches over and grabs MARY. Her screams of agony is deafening. TODD clings to her, but he isn't nearly strong enough. Screaming, MARY is pulled over the side of the building and falls to the ground. TODD looks over the railing and watches MARY land square on her back in a pool of blood. Her mangled corpse lies peaceful for mere moments before a horde of aliens circle around the body and begin to hungrily devour her corpse. TODD screams is horror. He sees two aliens making their way over the toppled vending machine and coming towards the door. Three other aliens are climbing the railing. Looking out onto the land surrounding the motel, TODD sees dozens of creatures milling about. Each direction he turns his head, something horrid stirs. TODD and BUFF are surrounded by these vicious beasts. BUFF pulls TODD into the hotel room, who is in some sort of shock. INT. ROOM #21 BUFF pushes the bed in front of the door, then tosses whatever other furniture in the room he can find on top of that. With the bed turned on its side, only a small portion of the top of the window remains uncovered. There is suddenly a pounding on the door, as one of the creatures smashes against it with its fist. BUFF starts to lift the couch on its end. An alien arm suddenly smashes through the window, sending shattered glass flying. TODD runs to help BUFF push the couch over the opening in the window. The arm searches maniacally for flesh to grab a hold of. The two boys push the couch over the hole. BUFF takes the butcher knife in his hand and slashes at the arm. He swings his arm twice, and on the second swipe one of the monster's digits is lopped off and drops to the floor. The arm retreats out of the window. The pounding on the door grows stronger as more monsters gather outside. The sound of their clawing and deep, low growls is increasingly terrifying as it grows louder. BUFF and TODD put their back to the overturned bed and push with all their strength to keep the beasts out. Sweat pours down their brows. These boys are terrified. FADE TO BLACK FADE IN INT. ROOM #21 - LATER Much later at night. The only light in the room comes from a small fire the boys have lit in a metallic garbage can in the center of the room. Though the monsters no longer claw at the door, their presence can still be felt quite clearly. They can be heard milling about outside, snarling and growling. It is difficult to tell exactly how many, but it's obviously a lot. BUFF lies on the ground with his back against the overturned bed. He has a blanket wrapped around him. Though his eyes are closed, he cannot sleep. TODD sits upright beside the fire with a bible in his hands. He stares deeply into the fire, mourning the loss of a very close companion. TODD slowly tears pages individually out of the bible and tosses them into the fire. After each page he reflects, listening to the sounds made by the blood-thirsty creatures outside his door. He tears another page to cover the noise. FADE TO BLACK FADE IN Dawn. Light slowly starts to seep through the uncovered parts of the window. The fire in the garbage can was extinguished long ago. The sound of dozens of creatures groaning, growling, and mustering about outside the motel can clearly be heard. BUFF sits curled up in the corner, slowing waking up. The crowbar lies in his arms. TODD stands against the far wall, peering through the curtains onto the field below. TODD looks down as BUFF awakens. As BUFF gains consciousness, he notices that TODD's eyes appear as though he's spent a great deal of time crying. TODD turns his attention back to the window. BUFF You okay? TODD Fine. An awkward pause. The only noise is that of the alien beasts wandering outside. The mood in the room turns somber. Their situation is deadly serious. BUFF We can't stay here. TODD I know. We need to signal for help. BUFF Signal? Signal who? The place is deserted. TODD There was a rescue station around here. There's got to be someone around. BUFF doesn't try to hide his doubtful looks, but TODD raises his voice before BUFF can say anything. TODD You know what? It doesn't matter. We can't stay here. BUFF nods in agreement. TODD opens the curtain wide and points out the window. Past a small clearing and thicket of trees, a high school is clearly visible. The two-floor, concrete school is quite isolated; other than a few small homes and single-floor buildings, the high school is virtually alone on the horizon. The school is sandwiched in between a large football field and a small parking lot, which is currently empty except for two small cars. Less than a dozen creatures can be seen from this view. BUFF gets up and looks out the window as well. TODD How far away do you figure that school is? BUFF Too far to run. We'd never make it. TODD (impatient) Buff, come on. Concrete walls, hardly any windows, it'd be really easy to board up. It's the safest place around here. And we can see the whole town from the roof. BUFF No fucking way am I getting on that roof! Those things will get you for sure. TODD (really impatient) I am not asking you to get on the fucking roof! I'm telling you we're getting the hell out of here. BUFF (frustrated) Man, that's suicide. TODD (defensive) What else are we gonna to do? Do you have a better idea? There is no plan B, okay? There's just this plan! BUFF bites his tongue before saying something he'd regret. He takes a deep breath as his gaze lingers outside the window. The deep, ominous sound of the creatures meandering outside fills the pause in the conversation. BUFF shakes his head. TODD Look how slow they are. We could run right past them. BUFF And how are we supposed to get in, if we make it? TODD I said there were hardly any windows, I didn't say there weren't any. BUFF glances around the room, realizing that frankly they haven't a choice. He rubs his eyes, then looks into TODD's. BUFF Alright. CUT TO: EXT. BEHIND KEY MOTEL - MORNING The window for Room #21 is pushed wide open, and TODD sticks his head out. There doesn't seem to be any creatures nearby, but their distinctive moan can clearly be heard, so they're not far off. TODD climbs out the window and drops onto a soft patch of grass on the ground beneath. BUFF pops his head out the window, tossing the crowbar down beside TODD. BUFF takes a deep breath, hesitant to climb out a second-floor window. TODD picks up the crowbar and holds it in a defensive position. He looks up the window, anxious for BUFF to follow him. BUFF rubs his slightly congested nose, then throws one leg out the window. He pushes himself out in a most ungraceful manner, hangs briefly as he contemplates the fall, then drops onto the ground like a sack of potatoes. He stands and shakes himself off, but TODD has already started running for dear life towards the school. The sound of the approaching beasts grows increasingly louder. BUFF chases after him, as fast as his chubby legs will carry him. Between the boys and the school lays a small grove of trees. As they run towards it, two creatures stagger out from behind the woods. TODD darts to the right in the hopes of avoiding them. He pushes himself to move faster and faster. The monsters are so awfully slow that outrunning them doesn't prove much of a challenge. BUFF is not nearly as fast as TODD, but seems quick enough to avoid the aliens. The boys race through the trees, dodging branches and jumping over fallen trunks. Many of the trees have already lost their leaves, and the ground is covered in a variety of dry, vibrantly colored leaves. The leaves swish softly as the two young men scamper through the brush. From within the woods three other aliens approach. Two of the slimy things glide through the trees by swinging from tree to tree using their massive arms. The third lumbers through the brush, as the echoing sound of rustling leaves matches the monster's leaden pace. In the distance dozens of monsters can be heard inching closer from all sides. An alien swipes at a small tree blocking its path. The creature's swipe contains such force that the tree falls over with a loud thud. TODD and BUFF push themselves as hard they can. While slow, the number of aliens chasing them is steadily increasing, and they are definitely in harm's way. Navigating through the last of the trees, they're just over 100 yards from the school. EXT. WEST HILL SECONDARY SCHOOL BUFF and TODD run down through the trees and into the parking lot. From this close the school's age clearly shows. One, then three, then six aliens pour out of the woods towards the boys. Others begin to approach from all directions. BUFF slows down and leans against one of the cars in the parking lot. He is painfully out of breath. TODD sprints off ahead of him, without waiting. BUFF looks all around him. From every direction there appears to be a ghastly beast in the distance lumbering towards him. There are at least double the amount of creatures they confronted the day earlier. The situation is getting worse by the minute, and BUFF appears overwhelmed. TODD turns and looks at him, but doesn't stop running. TODD (furious and screaming) Let's go, you fat fuck! Move! Without hesitation, BUFF runs after TODD. BUFF is a boy who was definitely not built for speed. TODD runs up to a window at the side of the school. He looks inside, and sees that it leads to an empty classroom. He swings his crowbar against the pane, but it takes a few hits before it shatters. BUFF finally reaches his side, as a few dozen creatures swarm into the parking lot. The boys need to move fast. TODD climbs through the window first. INT. CLASSROOM A typical classroom, with a large wooden desk for the teacher at the front of the room, a blackboard across two walls, and rows of tiny desks filling the room. The power in the entire building has been shut off. TODD lands on the cold, hard floor and rolls into a desk, knocking it over. He runs over to the teacher's desk and pushes it over as BUFF topples through the window. He runs to help TODD push the desk over to the broken window. They push it up against the wall, but the desk isn't nearly big enough to cover the entire window. Looking out, they can see the beasts are now too close for comfort. The boys can smell the stale breath of the monsters, and as they swing their claws the teens can feel the rush of air. TODD and BUFF look at each other for an instant before running for the door. Four different alien claws smash the remaining glass in the windows as they desperately try to claw their way inside. BUFF pushes the door open and runs into the hallway as fast as he can. INT. MAIN HALLWAY BUFF crashes into a sixteen-year-old young man with a baseball bat, and lands on top of him as they fall to the floor. TODD runs out the door and slams it behind him. He pauses for a moment and takes in his surroundings. BUFF lies on the ground, virtually on top of a rugged but young-looking teen named LUKE, who clutches a baseball bat. Two sixteen ish athletic young men stand in the center of the hallway and stare with confused expressions. One is named MIKE, tall with shaggy brown hair and a ragged goatee. The other, ADAM, is shorter, with blond hair. He also wears a gold cross around his neck. Both have their arms full of boxes of food stolen from the cafeteria. These three boys are all large and athletic, a sharp contrast to TODD and BUFF. They each carry a strong swagger. Before anyone can make sense of the situation, the sound of huge alien monsters breaking into the classroom grow louder and more fierce. TODD runs over to a vending machine beside the door and starts to rock it. ADAM drops the food and runs to help him. Together they topple the machine and it falls with a crash in front of the door. The aliens are trapped inside. They can be heard clawing at the door, but to no use. LUKE pushes BUFF off of him and sits up. TODD wipes the sweat off his brow. He and BUFF are completely out of breath. As the clawing sounds grow louder, LUKE runs off down the hallway. LUKE Come on! The others follow instantly. The walls of the hallway are made of brick, and lined with lockers. The hallway is rather dark with few windows and no lights on. Any free wall space is covered by a university poster or announcement about some lame student council event. LUKE approaches two doors leading into the gym, with the others closely behind him. Beside the door is sign of rules which are "strictly enforced". LUKE throws the doors to the gym open and runs inside. The others follow. INT. GYM LUKE slams the door. He locks it, then grabs the crowbar out of BUFF's hand and jams it between the door frame and the handle, securing it tightly. He turns his back to the door and leans against it, exhaling loudly. Only a hint of light seeps through the cracks in the doors. LUKE You fuckers scared the hell out of us. There is an awkward pause as BUFF, TODD and LUKE catch their breath. ADAM and MIKE stare at each other dumbly, unsure of what to do. It is clear that they are merely followers to LUKE. TODD (to LUKE) Sorry about that. TODD extends his hand, and LUKE shakes it. TODD I'm Todd... (points to BUFF) ...and this is Buff. LUKE, ADAM, and MIKE all begin laughing at BUFF's ridiculous nickname. MIKE "Buff"? BUFF Just this stupid nickname I got. Call me Greg. MIKE Oh, no fucking way, man! You're Buff! Another rousing chorus of laughter from LUKE, ADAM, and MIKE. It is clear that the three muscular jocks don't have much regard for these two little dorks. LUKE leans in closer to BUFF. LUKE I'm Luke. BUFF Nice to meet you. LUKE and BUFF shake hands. LUKE points over to ADAM and MIKE. LUKE This is Adam, and this is Mike. ADAM Buff. MIKE Buff. Both young men chuckle as they say BUFF's name. TODD and BUFF shake hands with both young men. TODD notices that the other doors around the gym are tightly barricaded with rope and chains that might be found in an equipment closet. They're safe here. There is a brief pause as the young men look each other up and down. LUKE So what's the deal? You guys fags or something? TODD and BUFF look at each other and try to force a chuckle, although they clearly find the joke in poor taste. MIKE and ADAM, on the other hand, find it hilarious. TODD We were trying to get to the rescue station and our car broke down. LUKE Yeah, shit hit the fan yesterday. That's how we ended up here. There's no fucking rescue station around here, I can promise you that. There's fucking nothing around here. An awkward pause. BUFF (pointing to TODD) There were three of us. We, um... his girlfriend was... we lost her. BUFF's voice starts to trail off, but everyone seems to understand what he's saying. There is a somber pause, as everyone reflects on the gravity of the situation. LUKE, MIKE, and ADAM clearly don't care very much, but they have enough courtesy to keep quiet. TODD clears his throat, trying to break the silence. TODD How long have you guys been here? LUKE We stumbled in here yesterday. This place isn't bad, though. We barricaded all of these doors last night, and the sink in the change room still works. MIKE (to TODD and BUFF) Hey, do you guys have any smokes on you? TODD does his best to look cool while he shakes his head. BUFF simply laughs. BUFF I can't smoke. I've got sinus issues. There is an awkward pause as TODD walks over to the gym doors. He gets right up beside it, in order to hear if any more aliens approach. Except for BUFF's heavy breathing, the room is absolutely silent. MIKE So... have you guys got any place to go? There is a silence as BUFF looks over at TODD and flashes a scared look. TODD clears his throat. TODD Uh... well, we kinda thought this place was empty. LUKE It ain't. ADAM (to LUKE) Oh, for Christ's sake. Don't be such a dick. LUKE (to ADAM) What? TODD Look, what's the rest of the school like? LUKE I don't know, we haven't really checked it out. We're fine in here. ADAM rolls his eyes as he takes a seat on the floor. MIKE, anticipating an argument, puts down the food and rubs the back of his neck. MIKE (to TODD) We've had this conversation already. TODD What do you mean? LUKE (loud and defensive) Look, the gym is the safest place to be. We can go out into the halls if we need to, but we need to stay here cause we'll never get this whole place sealed. It's a fucking barn. ADAM (to TODD) Don't bother arguing with him. LUKE (to ADAM) Man, do you know how many of those things are probably already in here? Look how easy those two got in. We'll go get food when we need to. Otherwise, we stay here. ADAM throws his hands up in the air in defeat. He's obviously already argued his point before. TODD rubs his chin. TODD Are you guys from around here? ADAM All three of us, born and raised. TODD So, do you guys go to this school? Err, did you, I guess. They all nod. TODD Is there a wood shop here? ADAM Yeah. It's around the corner, down the hall. TODD Well, let's go check it out. LUKE (exasperated, tired of arguing) Todd, we haven't got guns, we haven't got fuck all. Just stay here. TODD We should at least find out what tools we've got. Maybe we can board this place up. TODD starts walking over to the equipment closet, and can be heard rooting around. LUKE For fuck's sake, you're gonna get eaten alive, you dumb mother fucker! MIKE Let him go. LUKE He'll never get this fucking thing sealed up. There's more windows than a fucking greenhouse! TODD comes out of the equipment closet with a baseball bat in his hands. He starts walking back to the gym doors. TODD Not really. Most of the windows are in classrooms, and we can block those doors easy. Besides, we need some way to see what's going on outside, try and signal for help. ADAM I'll show you where it is. ADAM stands up and walks beside TODD, who pulls the crowbar out from between the door handles. LUKE shakes his head. LUKE You guys are gonna fucking die, you know that? Nice knowing you. TODD (to LUKE) If there's nothing there, we'll stay in the gym. LUKE almost pouts as he sits down against the wall. MIKE and BUFF sit down beside him. MIKE rips into a box of crackers. TODD puts his ear to the door, but hears nothing. He slowly pushes it open. INT. MAIN HALLWAY TODD creeps out into the hallway, and looks down both ends. The halls are empty and silent. Even the clawing and groaning which filled the air earlier has now dissipated and can only faintly be heard in the background. TODD follows ADAM, and closes the gym doors behind them. ADAM walks down the hall, slowing as he reaches the corner of the hallway. He carefully and quietly pokes his head around the corner, ensuring the coast is clear. Seeing nothing in the hall, he motions for TODD to follow him. BACK TO: INT. GYM BUFF, MIKE, and LUKE sit in a small circle on the gym floor, eating crackers. BUFF rubs his nose. BUFF Does anybody have any tissues? LUKE and MIKE both shake their heads. BUFF sighs, then lifts the bottom of his shirt to his nose and blows it. LUKE furrows his brow. BUFF Sorry. CUT TO: INT. TECH WING HALLWAY ADAM leads TODD down a dark hallway towards a room marked "WOOD SHOP". Their footsteps echo as they run down the hall. TODD holds the crowbar over his head in preparation for an attack. ADAM opens the door to the wood shop and they both walk in. INT. WOOD SHOP The room is very dim, as the only light comes through small windows near the ceiling which have a wire mesh over them. A number of tables with vice grips built into the ends of them are arranged in the center of the room, and a few tables are still covered with unfinished projects and used sandpaper. Enormous, out-of-date machines are parked at inconvenient locations around the room. Pipes of all shapes and forms snake around the room. Safety posters clutter the walls, and a thin layer of sawdust covers everything. ADAM walks over towards a large wooden cupboard. ADAM Don't worry about Luke. He's just tired. TODD I don't care, I'm doing this with or without him. ADAM opens the cupboard, revealing a wide assortment of tools of all shapes and sizes. They begin to grab all the hammers and nails they can find. BACK TO: INT. GYM - LATER LUKE, MIKE, and BUFF sit against the wall, trying to force a conversation. BUFF So, have any of you guys ever been to a demolition derby? Suddenly, the sound of loud hammering can be heard echoing through the hallways. BUFF turns to face the sound. As the hammering continues, there is a knock at the door. ADAM (through door) Luke? Mike? LUKE stands up and walks over to the door. He removes the baseball bat out from between the door handles and opens the door. ADAM stands there with a handful of hammers and nails. BUFF and MIKE stand up and walk over towards the door. ADAM (to LUKE) You wouldn't believe how much stuff we found. We'll have this place air-tight in no time. ADAM points behind him. At the far end of the hallway, TODD can barely be seen, hammering a plank of wood over a door. ADAM Todd's already started. BUFF squeezes past LUKE and ADAM and walks out into the hallway, to go give TODD a hand. LUKE rolls his eyes as he tries to hide his anger. MIKE stands hesitant, unsure of where to go next. LUKE Are you guys fucking serious? ADAM Lucas, you're being an asshole. LUKE Hey, fuck you, bible boy. I just don't want my balls ripped off by one of those wookie-things. We can hold them off if we stay in here. ADAM (very patronizing) The gym's not going anywhere, we can come back if we need to. Why box ourselves in now? LUKE glares back at ADAM. ADAM This place is safe. We haven't seen any of them. Pussy. LUKE throws his hands up in the air. LUKE Fine, whatever. LUKE walks into the hallway, and MIKE follows. INT. MAIN HALLWAY LUKE walks downs the hallway, and sees TODD barricading the doors. Around the corner from that spot, the front of the building can be found. BUFF takes one of the desks at the end of the hallway and starts trying the rip the legs off of it. ADAM hands LUKE a hammer. ADAM C'mon, we can still have some fun. LUKE looks at the baseball bat MIKE holds in his hands. For the first time, LUKE smiles. LUKE All right, let's trash this place! CUT TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY - LATER In a MONTAGE, vending machines are toppled over in front of doors, windows are barricaded with planks of wood, and locks are reinforced with whatever heavy objects are readily available. It seems as though TODD was correct, there aren't many doors or windows in the building. LUKE and MIKE literally throw anything remotely heavy they can get their hands on in front of the doors. They seem to be going out of their way to create as big a mess as possible. They takes heavy tables and chairs and throw them against the door in a pile. They take framed pictures off the wall and toss them onto the floor. MIKE pounds the pile of objects into the door with a baseball bat. It's clear they're enjoying the destruction they're creating. TODD methodically seals any crack in the building he comes across. He works steadily to get the job, driven to survive. He takes this very seriously. ADAM wanders the hallway, hammer in hand. Most of the doors leading into classrooms are either barricaded with planks of wood or are blocked by a pile of heavy objects. ADAM walks up to those doors which are nailed shut, adding a few more nails for protection. He wanders past a large trophy case, and with a devilish grin he smashes it with his hammer. BUFF hammers in the last nail, securing a table top over a small window at the far end of the hallway. BUFF rubs his eyes and stretches, exhausted. The hallway grows dark as the barricading continues. Partial light leaks through a few exposed spaces in occasional places. DISSOLVE TO: INT. REAR DOORS - LATER MIKE rests against the wall, gently rolling the metal baseball bat back and forth on the floor. The sound echoes loudly, as does the distant sound of hammering. LUKE carries a large, heavy wooden chair and throws it onto a pile of other tables and chairs which blocks this exit. LUKE groans loudly as the chair lands with a thud. LUKE All right, enough of this! Let's go find something to eat. MIKE Agreed. MIKE stands up and follows LUKE as he starts to walk down the adjacent hallway. At the end of the hallway, they can clearly see ADAM hammering another board into place over a window. LUKE yells down the hall to him. LUKE (yelling) Adam! ADAM turns around and looks at both LUKE and MIKE. He yells back. ADAM Yeah? LUKE Want some protein? ADAM Oh yeah! ADAM drops his hammer onto the floor and runs down the hallway to meet up with the two boys. They begin walking in the opposite direction, down another hallway towards the cafeteria. INT. MAIN HALLWAY The footsteps of the three boys echo as they walk down the hallway. The cafeteria can be seen at one end of it. One side of the hallway is aligned with lockers, with a stairwell in the middle. The sound of furniture being pushed along the floors can be heard coming from upstairs. LUKE and MIKE ignore it, but ADAM stops at the stairwell. He yells up. ADAM Guys! Food! CUT TO: INT. SECOND-FLOOR HALLWAY TODD pushes a large wooden desk in front of a classroom door, securing the last door on the second floor. BUFF rests against a row of lockers, exhausted. Upon hearing the call for food, he stands up. BUFF Are you coming? TODD stares up at a skylight in the ceiling as he rubs his chin. BUFF Todd? TODD I'm not finished yet. BUFF We can finish later, it's finished for the most part. There's lots of time. TODD looks at BUFF with the intention of arguing further, but BUFF is famished, and starts walking towards the stairwell without waiting. TODD reluctantly follows, after one last glance at the skylight. CUT TO: INT. CAFETERIA By this time, most of the cafeteria has already been gutted by the boys, and all the chairs and tables have been used to board up the doors and windows. Those that are left have been overturned or broken. The walls are littered with hand made posters for upcoming school events. In one wall are two doors which lead into the kitchen. There is a water fountain in the corner, and one vending machine remains lying on its side another corner. It contains a large amount of candy. LUKE walks towards it, while MIKE and ADAM follow. LUKE takes the baseball bat out of MIKE's hands. LUKE Breakfast of champions. With a mighty swing, LUKE smashes the bat into the front of the vending machine, knocking a giant hole in the front of it. As the boys giggle with delight, LUKE takes a very more swings at the machine using all the force he can muster. Candy bars and bags of chips pour out of the hole in the front. LUKE puts down the bat, and the three boys start scooping out candy by the armful. MIKE My dentist is gonna be really pissed. ADAM chuckles as they shovel candy into their mouths. MIKE then bites into three bars at once, letting out an orgasmic sigh of relief. ADAM and LUKE laugh hysterically. MIKE Dude, chocolate can't go bad, right? ADAM (looking at the chocolate bars in his hands) I doubt. These things sit those machines for months. TODD and BUFF walk into the cafeteria. ADAM turn his attention to them. ADAM Dinner's on me, ladies. ADAM smiles as he throws a few chocolate bars at TODD. TODD catches them all, and hands one to BUFF. BUFF hands it back to TODD. BUFF I'm allergic to nuts. TODD shrugs, then hungrily devours the chocolate bar. BUFF smiles as he sees everyone enjoying the food. He looks beside him and sees two doors leading into the kitchen. BUFF I'm going to check the kitchen. BUFF goes into the kitchen. INT. CAFETERIA KITCHEN Being very dark, BUFF pulls a lighter out of his pocket to see better. The kitchen is an immense room, cluttered with a number of huge appliances. No power runs through any of them. Massive deep fryers align the walls, while a giant oven sits quietly in the center of the room. An enormous solid metal door leads into a walk-in refrigerator, while another leads into a massive pantry. Stacks of boxes stuffed with non-perishable food sit in the corners. Some boxes have already been toppled over, as the boys have already raided the kitchen once before. A faint clicking sound echoes through the room as BUFF tries to navigate his way through the room. The lighter provides little light. BUFF finds the pantry door and opens it wide. Inside he finds everything from crackers and cookies to soups and kool-aid aligning the shelves. BUFF is astounded, as there is enough food to last quite a while. He cannot hold his excitement, and begins to jump and laugh wildly. BUFF Jackpot! He randomly grabs an armful of boxes, knocking some items on the floor. He carries the load of boxes back out into the cafeteria. INT. CAFETERIA BUFF walks out with an enormity of food and looks upon the other boys. Dozens of old wrappers and empty bags lay scattered between them. He lays the food down in front of them, then sits down next to them. LUKE reaches for the last bag of pretzels on the floor. BUFF snatches it while flashing an apologetic glance. BUFF I can't eat the chocolate bars. LUKE rolls his eyes. MIKE What we need is some beer. LUKE No, what we need is some guns. TODD We don't need any guns. A few more reinforcements and they won't be able to get in. If they do, we can hold out in the gym. ADAM It would be nice to have a gun. I don't know where you'd find one here, though. LUKE There's a police station on the other side of the football field. ADAM They're not going to give us a gun. LUKE I don't think there's anybody there. Looked quiet this morning, anyway. I bet they've got a fucking arsenal in there. TODD You'd never make it. There's way too many of those things out there. LUKE That's how Arnold got all his guns in Terminator. He just drove into a police station and cleaned the place out. MIKE T2 had way cooler guns in it, though. ADAM Yeah. That big mini-gun that Arnold used at the end, that was so cool. BUFF My favorite gun was always that little grenade launcher that he blew up cars with. ADAM No, the best weapon in a movie ever is the light-sabre. Easily. MIKE I don't know... ADAM Oh, fuck yeah! That cool noise it makes -- ADAM stands up and imitates the swooshing noise of a Star Wars light-sabre as he swings his arms around. ADAM You can't beat that. MIKE What about the guns they had in Aliens? Or Judge Dredd? ADAM I never saw Judge Dredd. TODD That movie sucked so bad. MIKE Oh yeah, but that gun he had was cool. He just talked into it and it changed the type of bullet that fired, or the way it fired. Pretty sweet. LUKE So are we getting guns or what? BUFF Wait, a light-sabre isn't a gun, it's a sword. ADAM I didn't say "gun", I said coolest "weapon". BUFF Oh. (beat) What about the proton packs the Ghostbusters had? MIKE I always liked that gun that Robocop kept in his leg. ADAM Yeah! LUKE rubs his forehead. He isn't in the mood for banter. LUKE There's windows all along the back of the police station, where the offices are. I bet we'd get in no problem. TODD We don't need guns. We can fight them off with baseball bats. LUKE rubs his temples then clenches his fists. MIKE picks the baseball bat up off the ground and starts poking ADAM with it. MIKE (singing) Beat on the brat, beat on the brat... TODD You know what we do need? We need to get on the roof and make some kind of signal for help. Otherwise, no one's going to come looking for us. LUKE Nobody's looking for your dumb ass. TODD There was a rescue station around here. The army's got to be around looking for survivors. Eventually they'll find us. LUKE (very condescending) So, what, you wanna start shooting up flares? TODD I think we should have a big fire going on the roof. Not big enough to burn a hole through the ceiling, but big enough that someone might see it. No one seems too thrilled about the idea. BUFF You'll never get me up on that roof. LUKE (to TODD) You can do whatever you want, I don't care. LUKE takes another big bite out of his chocolate bar. LUKE Is anybody coming with me to get guns? TODD Let's finish boarding the school up first, okay? LUKE rolls his eyes, but is obviously in no mood for an argument. He just shrugs. LUKE Whatever. TODD I'm going to get back to work. TODD waits for a response, but there is none. Everyone is too preoccupied with the candy in their hands. TODD walks out of the room. As he leaves, LUKE whispers something to MIKE, who laughs out loud. Presumably it was a joke made at TODD's expense. CUT TO: EXT. WEST HILL SECONDARY SCHOOL - EVENING From the outside of the building it is clear that most of the windows have already been boarded up. The school is completely silent, dark and barren. A number of aliens lumber around outside, wandering aimlessly. A few desperate aliens pound on the doors of the building, with no use. Other than the creatures, there isn't a single sign of life outside the building. CUT TO: INT. HALLWAY BUFF works diligently at boarding up a window. As he puts the last touches on nailing up his board, he steps back and looks at his window, completely airtight. He then looks for any nails sticking out and hammers them in. MIKE sits on the floor, half asleep, slumped against a section of lockers. He holds the bat in his arms. He appears exhausted, although he hasn't really done any work. CUT TO: INT. GYM LUKE runs around the gym in circles, dribbling a basketball. He takes a few shots at the net, practicing his free throw. CUT TO: EXT. ROOF - EVENING A hockey stick pounds on the skylight until the plastic eventually pops out of the frame. TODD and ADAM climb up a metal ladder onto the roof, through the skylight. TODD climbs out first, while ADAM hands up a number of broken wooden chairs and old textbooks, clearly fodder for a fire. ADAM climbs out and together they climb onto the highest point on the roof. TODD starts to gather a few bricks scattered around the roof, and he uses those to make a fire pit. ADAM looks over the side of the roof at the dozen of beasts wandering below. A couple of the beasts seem to be trying to climb the walls of the school, but can't seem to get more than a few feet before slipping to the ground. ADAM inches closer to the edge. TODD turns and looks at him. TODD I wouldn't get too close. Those things are great climbers. ADAM backs away from the edge. TODD I don't think they can get up these walls, though. ADAM We wouldn't have any problems running past them. Look how slow they are. TODD doesn't pay much attention as he piles wood into the fire pit. ADAM There don't seem to be very many from up here. TODD still doesn't pay any attention. ADAM holds up an imaginary rifle and pretends to shoot at various aliens like a sniper. TODD Can you pass me some paper? ADAM snaps out of daydream and picks up a few of the old textbooks. He hands them to TODD, who rips out a few pages and places them into the fire pit. He shakes his head as he notices how many small puddles of water rest around the fire pit. TODD Damn. It's too wet. We'll have to try later. TODD gets up off his knees and watches with ADAM as the sun approaches the horizon. It is nearly dusk. The two boys head back towards the skylight and climb back into the school. CUT TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY - LATER The halls are completely barren. An occasional gust of wind whistles through the cracks between the wooden boards and the windows they're nailed up against. Otherwise, the only sound in the building is the echoing voices of the boys in the gym. With no power running through the building, the ominous darkness of the hallways conveys how truly helpless the young men are. They are alone. CUT TO: INT. GYM TODD has also started a small fire in a metal garbage can in the center of the gym. The four boys are all lying on gym mats around the fire. Beside TODD sits a small pile of books, as he occasionally tosses one into the fire. As the four boys share a conversation, their voices echo in the massive gymnasium. TODD Adam and I got onto the roof okay, but it was too wet for a fire. We should get one going tomorrow no problem. LUKE (uninterested) Uh huh. TODD Well, I don't really like the idea of a fire on the roof burning all by itself. We should always have someone up there watching it to make sure it doesn't go out or get out of control. LUKE (getting frustrated) Oh, for fuck's sake. TODD (defensive) Come on. It's our only hope of getting rescued. LUKE just rolls his eyes, then glances over at ADAM and MIKE. MIKE grins while ADAM stares into the fire. TODD We can work in two hour shifts, or something like that. ADAM I think it's a good idea. BUFF I told you, I'm not getting on that roof. TODD Grow some balls, Buff. It's the safest part of the school. (beat) Guys, we need some kind of signal fire... LUKE (loudly interrupting) Enough about the fucking fire! I'm sick of hearing about it! I just want to go five minutes without hearing you bitch about the goddamn fire! Jesus! There is a long, silent pause. TODD seems too terrified to move. LUKE has never reacted so strongly. Everyone is very much on edge with a short fuse. Suddenly, there is a slam at the door in the corner as one of the aliens outside pounds on it. Everyone jumps. They turn to see that the door is securely fortified so that the beasts have no chance of getting in. BUFF What the hell do those things want? LUKE Us. There is a nervous pause, before MIKE laughs at the melodramatic statement. BUFF I meant why do you think they're here. LUKE I don't know. World domination, maybe? Human slaves, steal our atmosphere? How the hell would I know? MIKE If they wanted to take over the world they would have used big lasers and ray guns and stuff. And if they were going to make us slaves I doubt they'd try to eat us first. ADAM Good point. BUFF (to MIKE) Well, why do you think they're here? MIKE I don't know. They're aliens, that's for sure. Just not very smart ones. LUKE Then how the hell did they get here? MIKE (defensive) Fuck, I don't know. When did I become the expert? LUKE shakes his head. ADAM looks at the two feuding boys. ADAM This was in the bible, you know. LUKE throws his hands up in the air. LUKE Oh fuck, Adam, don't even start. ADAM There's a whole section in the New Testament... LUKE (loudly interrupting, mocking) Save us, Jesus! I am the clay, mold me and shape me! Take me to the promised land. BUFF chuckles softly while MIKE barrels over in wicked laughter. ADAM glares at LUKE. MIKE (mocking) Have mercy, my saviour! LUKE (mocking) Show me the way, my Sheppard! Hallelujah! MIKE (mocking) Hallelujah! BUFF can no longer contain his laughter and starts rolling on the floor in hysterics. ADAM Assholes. LUKE Adam, how stupid are you gonna feel after you die, when you wake up in hell and find out the Jews were right? MIKE can't even speak, as he's laughing too hysterically. ADAM rolls his eyes as he stares deep into the fire. ADAM seems used to this sort of treatment, but he can't exactly laugh it off either. MIKE and LUKE continue to laugh as TODD rolls over on the mat and tries to get some sleep. CUT TO: EXT. ROOF - MORNING The air atop the secondary school is cool and crisp. From above, the brilliant yellows and oranges in the leaves of the trees can be best appreciated, as the surrounding landscape is covered in lush forests. It is a truly magnificent sight. There are a few clouds in the blue sky (but mysteriously, no alien ships). It is a truly beautiful morning. TODD sits beside the fire on the roof, which is now fully ablaze. It would be quite easy to see this fire if anyone passed within about 150 yards of the school. In TODD's hands he holds a book, the novelization of Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind. TODD leafs through it, pausing occasionally to read a passage. He eventually grows disgusted with it and tosses it into the fire. TODD Bullshit. He kneels in closer to the fire, trying to warm himself a bit. It is safe to assume that he's been sitting beside this fire for quite a while. He takes a moment to look out at the horizon. Other than the aliens that lurk about, there doesn't seem to any sign of life anywhere. TODD is clearly having doubts about the effectiveness of his fire. TODD reaches into his pocket and pulls out his wallet. He opens it up and pulls out a picture of MARY and himself, taken in a photo booth. TODD strokes his forehead as he is torn between the fondness of his memories for MARY and his sadness over her loss. CUT TO: INT. MUSIC ROOM BUFF opens the door to a dark room filled with dozens of different types of musical instruments piled along the walls. BUFF pushes his way to the back of the room, pushing aside music stands and enormous plastic instrument cases. He kicks aside chairs and empty cardboard boxes. He stares at the saxophones, the tubas, the trombones, the acoustic guitars, and most importantly, the drum kit in the corner. BUFF starts to pull the drum kit out of the corner as ADAM walks in the door. BUFF turns around to see him standing there. BUFF Give me a hand with this drum kit. ADAM walks over beside BUFF and looks at the gorgeous drum set. It consists of a high-hat, two crash cymbals, a snare drum, a bass, two tom-toms, and a deep foot-pedal bass. The two of them start to carry the kit out one piece at a time into the hallway, where there's a little more light. ADAM Do you know how to play? BUFF Sort of. I took lessons for a month, and I was in this crappy garage band. ADAM Really? BUFF Yeah, it was called Empty Box. We sucked, but we played a few school dances. ADAM What kind of music did you play? BUFF A lot of Ramones covers, stuff like that. ADAM That's cool. Do you wanna jam? I've been playing guitar since I was six. BUFF Sweet. CUT TO: INT. HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER BUFF has assembled the drum kit out in the hallway, and sits down behind them. ADAM holds an acoustic guitar in his hands. BUFF clicks his drum sticks together three times like a professional musician. BUFF What do you want to play? ADAM Just give me a beat and I'll figure something out. BUFF begins to get a beat going on the drums, a very light slow tempo. Before long ADAM joins in, strumming away at his guitar, and beautiful music is born. A gorgeous tune fills the air and echoes through the halls as the two play. While they are hardly professional musicians, they still manage to produce a harmonious tune. CUT TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY The atmosphere in the empty hallway is eerie as the music of ADAM and BUFF echoes through the halls. LUKE walks through the hallway, dragging the baseball bat along the floor. He stares intently at a wall clock hanging from the ceiling. Once he's just beneath it, he jumps up and swings at it with the bat. It comes crashing down the floor as LUKE laughs devilishly. CUT TO: EXT. WEST HILL SECONDARY SCHOOL - LATER Just beyond the parking lot of the school, there seems to be some action going on between the aliens. A dead squirrel lies at the side of the road. One of the creatures snatches it up and starts to hungrily devour it. Two other beasts approach it, and the three begin to wrestle for the tiny piece of rotten meat. EXT. ROOF TODD looks down at the goings on beyond the parking lot. Amused, TODD returns to poking the fire with a stick. He tries to ignite the end of the stick, then use that flame to start a textbook on fire, but he doesn't seem to be having much success. CUT TO: INT. MAIN OFFICE LUKE wanders around the main office carrying the baseball bat, smashing everything he possibly can. After smashing a few computer screens, he throws the bat down, picks up a large black leather chair and throws it across the room. It lands on a desk with crash, sending dozens of small trinkets on the desk flying. LUKE yells in delight. He then walks over to a door marked "PRINCIPAL". He smiles to himself as he stands in front of it. With all the force he can muster, he kicks the door open and walks inside. INT. PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE LUKE takes his arm and in a single sweeping motion knocks everything off the desk onto the floor. He laughs, then pauses as he notices something on the floor. Amidst the broken paperweights and shattered photo frames lies a small key. It is attached to a paper tag which reads "RESTRICTED". LUKE picks up the key and looks at it. A sly grin forms on his face as he gets an idea. He turns and yells out the door. LUKE (shouting) Guys! Come here! CUT TO: INT. STORAGE CLOSET - MOMENTS LATER As two large wooden doors swing open, the pirates have clearly found their buried treasure. LUKE, MIKE, ADAM, and BUFF stare with wonder and amazement at the contents of the closet, which sit in a single, unorganized pile. Here rests all the items the school has confiscated. Some of the articles include pornographic magazines, whoopee cushions, knives, lighters, water pistols, a bong, x-ray glasses, and baseball caps with obscene messages. More importantly, however, are the Nerf guns. There are at least three dozen different Nerf guns piled on their side in the cabinet. MIKE Oh fuck, it's like Christmas! MIKE begins to leaf through one of the dirty magazines, while LUKE and ADAM both immediately reach for the Nerf guns. BUFF takes off his glasses and puts on the x-ray glasses. LUKE loads his plastic weapon with a foam ball and shoots MIKE in the crotch. MIKE (joking) You bastard, you're dead now! LUKE laughs as MIKE drops the dirty magazine and picks up a toy weapon of his own. CUT TO: INT. HALLWAY - LATER The boys chase each other around the hallways of the school, shooting at each other with rubber darts and foam balls. They are all laughing and having an exceptionally good time. MIKE jumps out from around a corner, making his best Rambo pose. MIKE I'm your worst nightmare. He starts shooting at LUKE, while ADAM does a Magnum P.I. style barrel roll out of the way, shooting tiny plastic discs at MIKE. BUFF stands beside a row of lockers, poised for action, occasionally leaning out to shoot a few more rounds of harmless ammo. LUKE runs down the hallway at top speed. LUKE Yipee-kai-ai mother fucker! For the first time, it seems like the boys are actually enjoying themselves. CUT TO: INT. CAFETERIA - LATER The boys have set up a number of targets at one end of the room. Empty pop cans have been stacked into three pyramids and sit on a small table. The three boys rest on the other side of the room, behind a rectangular table which has been turned on its side. They takes turns shooting at the targets. BUFF, who still wears the x-ray glasses, shoots and hits nothing. ADAM knocks two can over, while LUKE manages to hit every target. He turns and looks at the other two boys with an icy stare. LUKE I was born a killer. MIKE and ADAM laugh as LUKE squeezes the trigger. A small foam dart bounces off of BUFF's forehead. MIKE laughs harder. CUT TO: EXT. ROOF - AFTERNOON TODD is curled up next to the fire, barely awake. BUFF, who still hasn't taken off his x-ray glasses, pops his head up through the skylight. He takes the Nerf gun stuffed down the back of his pants, pulls it out and aims it at TODD's head. He misses, but TODD snaps out of his daze and looks over at BUFF. TODD I thought you weren't coming up here. BUFF I figured someone had to check on you, make sure you were still alive. TODD (pointing to toy gun) Where did that thing come from? BUFF climbs onto the roof and sits down beside TODD. BUFF Luke opened the restricted closet in the office, where they keep all the stuff that's been confiscated. TODD Cool. BUFF hands the plastic weapon to TODD. He examines it, then gripping it with one hand starts gesturing wildly like a big action star. He smiles. TODD I've always wondered about toy guns. BUFF What, like how they work? TODD No. The connection between boys and toy guns. BUFF Oh. TODD It's nothing new, right? Kids have been playing cowboys and Indians or cops and robbers since forever. It's not like you can blame it on TV, because kids were have been doing it since before TV was invented. There is an awkward pause. BUFF is hardly the type for deep conversation. BUFF Have you ever seen those toy guns they make in China? The ones that are illegal in North America? TODD Oh yeah, they're banned because they look so real, right? BUFF Yeah, those things are cool. (beat) Did you ever paint your water gun black? TODD (laughs) No. Why the hell would anybody do that? BUFF Realism, man. I did it all the time. TODD Yeah, but do you know how many times cops have shot someone because they thought they had a gun when all they had was a toy? BUFF (hesitant) Yeah, well, it still looked cool. BUFF takes off his x-ray glasses, then pulls out his normal glasses and put them back on. TODD hands him back the toy gun. TODD You know what, Buff? I don't think these aliens are smart enough to build the pyramids. There is a pause as BUFF tries to comprehend TODD. BUFF Chariots of the Gods, right? I get it. (beat) So, how safe is it up here? TODD As safe as it is inside. BUFF looks around the horizon for a moment. BUFF You know, it's getting cold out. You can go if you want. I'll watch the fire. TODD Really? Thanks, Buff. TODD smiles as he climbs back down into the school. BUFF pulls a handful of tissues out of his pocket, and wipes his runny nose. CUT TO: INT. HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER TODD walks down the empty hall. The sound of glass smashing can be heard coming from a classroom. TODD starts to walk faster towards the sound. As there is another crash, TODD notices that the tables which were barricading a classroom door have been pushed aside. TODD starts to run towards the classroom. Approaching the door, he slows down and stops just outside the door. There is another loud crash, and TODD gently pushes the door to the classroom open. INT. SCIENCE CLASSROOM Only a few desk remain in the classroom, and most are broken or overturned. The walls are completely covered with various diagrams, charts, and labels. The room is surrounded on all sides by a counter, nearly every inch of which is covered with a labyrinth of glass tubes, beakers, Bunsen burners, rubber tubes, and strange chemicals -- a contraption that Rube Goldberg and Herbert West might have collaborated on. LUKE and MIKE wildly run around the room, smashing anything that could possibly break. They toss desks against the wall and shoot at each other with toy guns. It's as if they're releasing every negative feeling they've ever had about science class and school in general. They laugh wildly as they cause as much damage as possible. From the doorway, TODD stares at them. MIKE stops as he sees TODD watching them. TODD tries to force a smile, but it's clear that doesn't think very highly of this sort of behaviour. TODD What are you guys doing? MIKE starts to laugh, picking up a heavy hot plate off the counter. MIKE Man, I fucking hate science class! With that, MIKE tosses the hot plate as hard as he can into a stack of test tubes. Shattered glass sprays off in all directions. LUKE starts to laugh hysterically, and then he too does some more smashing. MIKE I've always wanted to do that. Again TODD tries to force a smile. He stands awkwardly at the door, like a parent walking in on his child's slumber party. MIKE and LUKE stop and look at him. LUKE Look, retard, what do you want? TODD We got a signal fire going on the roof. LUKE What, do you want a fucking merit badge? LUKE and MIKE start laughing. MIKE Todd, you suck so bad. TODD Christ, guys, am I the only one who wants to get out of here? LUKE The front door hasn't moved. You can leave anytime. MIKE You wouldn't be missed. TODD Look, I don't want to fight. LUKE (frustrated) And I don't want to sit outside in the freezing fucking cold for no good goddamn reason! MIKE Just what the hell are we supposed to do up there? TODD (very condescending) I don't know, look for anything. Other people, maybe? Put some wood on the fire every once in a while. I'm not asking much. LUKE and MIKE look at each other. They start shaking their heads. TODD What if I stay with the fire overnight if you guys watch it tomorrow morning? Come on, please, it can't hurt. There is a long pause as LUKE and MIKE consider their options. LUKE is obviously not in favour of this plan. MIKE gets a look of hesitation, and LUKE immediately rolls his eyes and throws up his hands. He storms off out the door, overturning a chair on his way. LUKE Whatever! I don't fucking care! LUKE can be heard punching a locker or two as he walks away down the hall. MIKE lowers his head, as though ashamed of letting LUKE down. MIKE (to TODD) Alright, tomorrow morning. TODD Thanks, Mike. MIKE says nothing in response. TODD slowly backs out of the room, careful to walk the direction opposite of the way LUKE went. INT. HALLWAY TODD walks away from the classroom, shaking his head. Apparently a little maturity is too much to ask. CUT TO: EXT. WEST HILL SECONDARY SCHOOL - NIGHT The aliens, who appear to never sleep, wander about aimlessly. Two creatures root through an overturned garbage can, while a third desperately tries to squeeze between them to root for food. Finding nothing, they cry out in hunger, and continue to prowl the area for food. EXT. ROOF TODD is huddled beside the fire, tossing a few more broken chair legs into the flame. He has four blankets wrapped around him, but still looks incredibly tired. Looking out onto the horizon, there isn't any other sign of light. The power is out everywhere, and if anyone else is still out there they certainly aren't signaling with flares or a fire. TODD tosses another plank of wood onto the fire, then curls up beside the fire. He can hear the distant sound of dozens of hideous creatures milling about the ground. TODD stares deep into the fire, mesmerized by the flames. TODD Oh, Mary, why didn't we just stay at your place? TODD pulls the blanket tighter around his body as he tries to keep himself from crying. Clearly exhausted, the pressure is starting to get to TODD. CUT TO: INT. GYM ADAM, LUKE, MIKE, and BUFF all lie on gym mats laid out around a fire in a metal garbage can. The four boys are sleeping soundly, despite the obvious discomfort from sleeping in the gym. The fire in the garbage can slowly dims and then goes out, leaving the boys in completely darkness. DISSOLVE TO: INT. HALLWAY - THE NEXT DAY BUFF happily practices away on the drum kit by himself. INT. MAIN HALLWAY LUKE, MIKE, and ADAM sit in the middle of the hallway playing poker. Instead of chips, however, they use pictures they've ripped out of magazines. MIKE looks at his cards, then reaches beside him and grabs a centerfold. MIKE (to LUKE) Alright, I see your girl-on-girl and raise you one girl next door. The three boys chuckle as TODD comes walking down the hallway towards them. His clothing is wrinkled and his hair is badly in need of a comb. He looks like someone who just spent the night sleeping outside. He wipes the sleep out of his eyes and yawns. The three boys turn and look at him as he walks towards them. TODD Hey. ADAM Good morning! ADAM smiles brightly while LUKE and MIKE simply nod and grumble in acknowledgment. TODD (to LUKE) It's your turn to watch the fire now. LUKE clenches his fists. He is not impressed at all by being told what to do, but knows that TODD is absolutely right. He takes a deep breath and shrugs. LUKE Alright. Let's take this outside, boys. TODD Thank you. LUKE ignores TODD, gathers up the stack of dirty pictures and stands up. MIKE and ADAM follow. ADAM looks at TODD and nods, but doesn't say anything. LUKE, MIKE, and ADAM walk down the hallway towards the stairwell as TODD walks away in the opposite direction. CUT TO: EXT: ROOF - LATER LUKE looks over the side of the roof, watching as the creatures stumble about. He tilts his head back, then spits off the roof. He turns and looks at ADAM, who is huddled beside the fire. LUKE God, they're ugly, aren't they? ADAM (pointing to an alien on the ground) Hey, didn't you use to go out with her? ADAM begins to laugh. LUKE Dude, how can you talk about your mother that way? LUKE walks back over to the fire, and begins pacing. LUKE (looking at the fire) What a fucking waste of time. LUKE wanders over to the edge of the roof and looks down at the creatures lumbering about below. He focuses on one particular alien just beneath him, pounding on the walls of the school. LUKE grabs a brick that rests beside the fire pit and picks it up. He hurls it down at the beast, nailing it square in the alien's head. Green blood is splattered against the ground as the creature falls to the ground in a crumpled heap. LUKE laughs to himself, while ADAM reacts as though the home team just scored an overtime goal. ADAM Dead solid perfect! The two boys grab a few more bricks and throw them down at the aliens. Neither comes close to hitting anything else, but they sure do seem to enjoy venting their anger in this fashion. MIKE pokes his head up through the skylight, wearing a huge grin. MIKE I found some! LUKE spin around to face MIKE with a mischievous grin. In MIKE's hand is a large plastic fuel can, filled to the brim with gasoline. He sets it down on the roof as he climbs out of the skylight. MIKE I got it from the auto shop. There's lots. LUKE cannot contain his excitement. He starts to laugh like a madman as he picks up the gas. He walks over to the edge of the roof, with MIKE and ADAM following closely behind. LUKE holds the fuel can up and dumps gasoline over the side of the building, frantically trying to soak a few of the creatures. He is unsuccessful as the beasts lurch out of the way, but he is still having an incredible time trying. LUKE puts down the fuel can, and walks over to the fire. He pulls out a burning chair leg out of the flames, and tosses it over the side of the building. The pool of gasoline just beneath them erupts in a huge flame. The few monsters wandering below try to scatter in the other direction, but they move achingly slow. The three boys laugh with devilish delight. MIKE picks a rock up off the ground and throws it at one of the creatures. ADAM simply stares down at the awful things. LUKE I wanna kill one of those things so fucking bad. That'll be some sweet payback, I'll tell you that right now. MIKE If I had a gun right now, I could just sit here all day and pick them off, one by one. They're like fish in a barrel. MIKE holds his finger out like a tiny pistol and pretends to fire at the aliens. MIKE Dammit, we need some guns! ADAM It would be pretty easy to hit them. They're so slow. LUKE I know. LUKE looks at the two boys with all seriousness. LUKE Come on, let's go. MIKE Where? LUKE points in the direction of the football field. Behind the chain link fence are some bushes, and a large brick building. It is the police station. LUKE The police station's on the other side of the football field. ADAM looks very hesitant. LUKE We can get in there no problem, take all the weapons we want, and run back. You can run right past those things. We'll be twenty minutes, tops. MIKE Let's do it! ADAM still seems unsure. ADAM What about Todd and Buff? LUKE Fuck them. One's an asshole, the other's a retard. They won't even notice we're gone. (beat) Come on, it'll be an insurance in case any of those things try to get in. There is still a sense of apprehension in ADAM's face, but LUKE and MIKE will clearly not accept "no" for an answer. ADAM Alright, let's go. MIKE Yeah! LUKE That's my boy. They all laugh as they climb back into the school through the skylight. CUT TO: INT. BOYS BATHROOM TODD stands over a sink, rubbing water over his face and through his hair. He tilts his head and takes a drink of water from the tap. The room is filled with the echoing sounds of BUFF playing the drums far in the distance. CUT TO: INT. SECOND-FLOOR HALLWAY - LATER LUKE and MIKE use hockey sticks to pull the nailed boards off of a window. As they come down, light starts to pour into the hallway through the window. ADAM stands behind him them, with a baseball bat in his hands. The end of his bat is wrapped with rags. As the boards come down, the football field can clearly be seen from the window. Beneath the window is a wide ledge the boys can easily stand on. LUKE smashes the glass in the window frame and climbs through onto the ledge. MIKE and ADAM follow. EXT. WINDOW LEDGE - MORNING The three boys climb onto the window ledge. Beneath them rests a large dumpster, which they could easily jump onto without hurting themselves. It also wouldn't be too difficult to climb back up to this spot. In front of them rests the football field, with large yellow goal posts sitting triumphantly on either end of the field. Weathered, unoccupied cement bleachers sit beside the field. A chain link fence surrounds the entire school, as well as the football field. A number of trees and bushes align the fence, but beyond them sits a single brick building: the police station. The boys have only attracted a limited attention, but there are definitely a few aliens headed in their direction. Dozens of others, however, wander about aimlessly on the football field. LUKE holds the hockey stick in front of him like a sword, as he tries to formulate a plan. MIKE is eager to fight, while ADAM is transfixed by the sheer number of beasts they face. LUKE Our biggest problem is going to be getting in the station, but we'll figure that out when we get there. I figure if we run fast enough we can jump the fence before those things even notice. (beat) Ready? MIKE Fuck, yeah! Let's go! LUKE Let's kick some ass! ADAM nods as MIKE jumps down onto the dumpster. LUKE pulls a lighter out of his pocket, and lights the end of ADAM's baseball bat, instantly transforming it into a torch. LUKE and ADAM then jump onto the dumpster and run for the football field. EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD As the boys land with crash on the dumpster, they begin to attract the attention of several monsters. Aliens from all directions begin to stumble towards the young men. The boys have no choice but to run out into the open, as there is nothing anywhere to give them any kind of cover. LUKE and MIKE take the lead, wildly swinging hockey sticks in front of them. ADAM follows closely behind. Their best efforts don't seem to deter the beasts, as they continue to swarm around the boys. They are now easily within twenty feet of the boys. MIKE sprints towards the closest creature stumbling in their direction. MIKE takes a swing at the beast with his hockey stick, but the alien bats it away with its massive arm, breaking the stick in two. Instantly MIKE stumbles backward. Fear strikes the boys for the first time. ADAM lunges forward with his torch, and waves it at the monster. The creature stops in its tracks, then takes a reluctant step backward as ADAM swings it madly. The alien swings its arm at the flame, but the torch is just out of its reach. Surrounding beasts inch closer and closer. LUKE steps behind ADAM and rips the torch out of his hands. Seeing the creatures retreat from fire, he realizes the torch may be their only hope. He starts running down the field ahead of the other two boys, forcing the aliens back. ADAM and MIKE scream for LUKE's attention as they desperately try to catch up to him. They are defenseless as the monsters approach. LUKE doesn't look back; he runs as fast as his legs will carry him to the fence. The distance between the boys grows wider as LUKE races to the fence. Massive alien arms swat at MIKE and ADAM from all sides. They are barely fast enough to dodge the monsters, as razor sharp claws come mere inches from tearing into the boys. As one of the creatures swings at ADAM, it just misses his neck, ripping off the gold cross he was wearing. It falls to the ground. EXT. FENCE LUKE is out of breath by the time he reaches the fence. He successfully avoided most of the aliens; the closest is about ten feet from him, walking along the fence towards him. As the beast approaches, LUKE throws the torch to the ground and starts climbing over the fence, without waiting for the other two boys. As LUKE lands on the other side, ADAM and MIKE reach the fence. Without hesitation, ADAM jumps over the fence. MIKE immediately picks up the torch and starts swinging it at the closest creature. The rage inside him builds as he swings at the alien. The dumb beast tries to move backwards, but MIKE speeds into him at full thrust and smashes the bat into the monster's head. EXT. BEHIND POLICE STATION The police station itself is a very sterile, unattractive building. A large brick-building, there are few adornments or windows, especially from the back. Along the side, however, there are a few windows which lead into different offices. A large oak tree grows beside the building. LUKE runs up to one of the windows and smashes the glass with his elbow. He starts to crawl through as two alien monsters appear from behind a large oak tree and lurch in his direction. BACK TO: EXT. FENCE MIKE plows the bat into the creature's head repeatedly, splashing gobs of green gore on all over his face. The monster topples over, but MIKE lays a few more swings into the corpse. ADAM watches from the other side of the chain link fence. ADAM Come on! MIKE takes a final moment to spit on the body of the monster before tossing the torch over the fence. ADAM picks it up. MIKE climbs the fence as creatures from all sides grow closer and closer. As MIKE reaches the top of the fence, one alien lunges forward into the fence. The sound of the monster crashing into it echoes loudly. Another creature, further down the fence, falls into the chain fence as well. ADAM holds the fire up to the fence. The flame touches the alien's body, and it howls loudly before stumbling backwards. MIKE hops over onto the other side of the fence. Two, three, four more aliens crash into the fence. They swing at it with their claws, and the fence is capable of toppling over at any moment. EXT. BEHIND POLICE STATION MIKE and ADAM run towards the smashed window, but stop short when they see two monsters moving slowly closer. ADAM waves the bat at them, but turns as he hears the fence collapse. A dozen other aliens, no longer barricaded by the fence, stagger towards the boys. ADAM moves in closer to the creatures, swinging the bat madly, but one stubborn beast refuses to retreat. It flashes its sharp, slimy teeth and swats at ADAM with its huge arms. Sweat pours down MIKE's face as his head darts around like that of a bird, trying to take everything in. Creatures are moving in from all sides, and there only hope of safety, through the window into the police station, is hopelessly blocked. The two creatures blocking their way emit loud roars as ADAM desperately tries to force them back. Their situation is perilous, and they are moments from certain death. The closest alien raises its arm and takes a step forward. ADAM's death is imminent. Suddenly, the creature's brain is blasted out the front of it's head. Green blood oozes from the wound as three more bullets bury themselves in the back of the alien's head. The monster topples forward, lifeless, as the second beast's face is ripped apart by two gunshots. It collapses onto the ground. LUKE pokes his head out of the window, pistol in hand. He motions for the two boys to climb in as he sees more beasts coming towards them. LUKE Get in here! ADAM and MIKE instantly climb through the tiny window. INT. POLICE STATION A tiny office, it's wall littered with framed fishing pictures and wanted posters. ADAM crawls through the window first, and sees that LUKE has already overturned a large wooden desk in the center of the room. After MIKE crawls through, LUKE starts pushing it in front of the window. LUKE still holds the pistol in his hands. ADAM stands at the back of the room, his gaze piercing into the back of LUKE's neck. LUKE pays no attention as he blocks the window with the desk. MIKE then throws the heavy wooden chair that accompanied the desk against the window, reinforcing it. A few aliens pound at the barricade. One of the creatures is able to pry one of its massive arms through the window. It outstretches its claws as LUKE aims his pistol at the monster's elbow. LUKE wastes no time in pulling the trigger, causing a burst of slimy green ooze to splatter against his face and the wall behind him. The monster retreats what stump remains. Aliens continue to pound at the window, but for the moment the boys appear to be relatively safe. The noise of dozens of moaning beasts is clearly heard. ADAM walks and stands face to face with LUKE. ADAM seems near boiling point. LUKE tries to pay no attention to it. ADAM (furious) What the hell is your problem?! LUKE What? ADAM I oughta punch you. LUKE Christ, Adam. We made it. Calm down. ADAM You almsot killed us, you son of a bitch! LUKE Don't be such a pussy. Go change your tampon, you'll feel better. MIKE starts to laugh. LUKE wanders over to a cabinet in the corner as ADAM glares at him. ADAM's mind is racing too fast for him to argue. LUKE pulls a handgun out of the cabinet and tosses it to ADAM. It is a small revolver. LUKE Here, this will make you feel better. ADAM looks at the gun in his hand and starts to smile. MIKE walks out of the office door, into the center of the police station. MIKE We did it. The station is filled with huge wooden desks, each littered with framed family pictures, coffee mugs, and massive amounts of paperwork. The walls are covered with wanted posters, posters for missing children, and safety tips. In the corner of the room is a small kitchenette, complete with sink and coffee machine. Beside that is a window which gives a view into the dispatcher's room, filled with silent machines and blank computer screens. The entire building is ominously silent, except for the echoing sound of the beasts pounding on the walls. No power runs to anything. MIKE looks around and throws his arms up into the air. MIKE We fucking did it! LUKE looks over at ADAM, who is still in awe of the gun in his hands. LUKE tries to feign sympathy. LUKE I was just trying to clear a path. ADAM looks at LUKE and rolls his eyes. LUKE flashes a smile before walking out into the main office, ignoring ADAM. ADAM shakes his head, and puts the gun in his pocket. CUT TO: INT. WEST HILL SECONDARY SCHOOL - HALLWAY BUFF practices away on the drums. TODD comes walking up beside him. TODD Did you hear something? BUFF looks up. BUFF Are you kidding? TODD I think somebody's trying to signal us. Have you seen Mike or Adam? BUFF shakes his head. TODD pauses a moment to think. TODD I'm gonna check the roof. I think we're getting outta here. TODD runs out of the cafeteria and down the hallway towards the stairwell. BACK TO: INT. POLICE STATION LUKE walks in to the main office as MIKE loudly sings the theme song from the TV show COPS. MIKE (singing) Bad boys, bad boys... LUKE walks up to one of the desks and opens the top drawer, and shuffles through the clutter. He looks up at MIKE. LUKE Come on, see if you can find a badge. You can be Barney Fife, I'll be that Matlock guy. MIKE laughs as he runs past the desks, sending papers flying in all directions. MIKE notices a box of donuts sitting on a desk at the end of the row, and walks towards it. ADAM walks into the room and scans it quickly, but freezes as he notices something in the distance. His body tenses. MIKE picks up the box of donuts and starts picking through them. MIKE Wouldn't you know, there's no jelly left. ADAM's stare is transfixed on a human hand lying on the ground. The body which accompanies it is obscured by a desk, but the hand sits in a pool of blood. ADAM takes a deep breath and swallows. MIKE picks up a donut and bites into it. MIKE Ugh. They're pretty stale. He holds the box up for the other two boys. MIKE Anybody want one? ADAM pays no attention to him, instead walking slowly towards the body. As he approaches it, he sees that it is the bloodied body of an officer who has obviously shot himself in the head. ADAM winces and turns away. LUKE continues to jump from desk to desk, rooting through the drawers. He has yet to find another gun. MIKE Hey, do you think they've got any of the stuff they get from drug seizures in here? LUKE laughs loudly, and then shrugs. ADAM ignores him completely, as he builds the courage to looks upon the corpse of the suicide victim. ADAM eyes the gun which rests in the body's right hand. He slowly reaches down and picks it up. ADAM looks at the gun from the side, and makes sure to put the safety on. Whereas the gun LUKE gave him was a small revolver, this handgun is an automatic, nearly twice as big. He then stuffs the gun down the font of his pants, the same way he's seen it done in hundreds of movies. LUKE slams one of the desk drawers shut in frustration. Still no sign of guns. He looks up at the wall, and sees a memorial photograph. It's a picture of a female officer, who was killed in the line of duty according to the plaque that accompanies the photo. LUKE I want to know why all the female cops on TV look so hot. Cops in real life are butch, man. LUKE's eyes continue along the wall to an unmarked door. He walks towards it. He tries to turn the knob, but the door is locked. He steps back and shoots off the lock on the door with his pistol. The door swings open. MIKE and ADAM jump as the gun is fired, and they look over at LUKE. As the door swings open wider, an arsenal of weapons is revealed. A wide and wild assortment of devices for killing and maiming. These range from shotguns to revolvers to automatic handguns. The floor of the closet is stacked with boxes of ammunition. Enough firepower to do some very serious damage. The jaws off all three boys drop and their eyes widen. LUKE Groovy! MIKE grabs the duffel bag from underneath a desk and runs over to the closet. ADAM follows closely behind. MIKE and LUKE begin to fill the bag with as many weapons as they can get their hands on. They laugh and giggle ecstatically. ADAM grabs a shotgun and feels the weight of the gun. He grins as he aims the weapon around the room. A huge grin starts to form on MIKE's face as he notices something behind the weapons. He reaches in and pulls out a large plastic helmet. He looks at LUKE and smiles. MIKE Riot gear! MIKE starts to pull shields, bullet-proof vests and billy clubs out of the closet and starts trying them on. He puts on the vest and helmet, then gets up off his knees. He slings a shotgun over his shoulder, and sticks two handguns into his pants. He picks up the shield and billy club. ADAM stuffs his pockets with shells, bullets, and clips. He picks up a box of flares and opens it. He puts the box on the floor. LUKE stops filling the duffel bag for a moment and picks up another billy club. He swings and hits the side of MIKE's shield. The two boys have a short, impromptu fencing match with their billy clubs. ADAM puts on a bullet proof vest and helmet. He picks up a shield. LUKE returns to filling the duffel bag as MIKE charges for ADAM. They collide shields first, and laugh loudly as they swat at each other with billy clubs. This is quite entertaining for all of them. CUT TO: INT. WEST HILL SECONDARY SCHOOL - SECOND-FLOOR HALLWAY TODD walks towards the smashed window at the end of the hallway. He looks out at the football field as a cool breeze blows through the window frame. TODD can see dozens of beasts staggering about the field. He clenches his fists and pounds one of them against the wall, then mutters under his breath. TODD Stupid fucking idiots. TODD turns and runs down the hallway towards the stairwell. Motivated, he moves quickly. BACK TO: EXT. POLICE STATION - DAY A dozen or so creatures lumber about outside the building. They seem barely coherent of their surroundings. They pay no attention to the police station's front door. Through the window in the door, ADAM, MIKE, and LUKE are barely visible, fully dressed in riot gear. They are huddled against the wall. INT. POLICE STATION LUKE has a number of shotgun shells hanging around both shoulders, and his pockets are stuffed full of bullets and clips. He has a holster around his waist, which holds two handguns. MIKE also wears a holster, and carries a shotgun. He also carries the duffel bag full of weapons. ADAM has two handguns in his lap, but rolls the billy club between his fingers. He eyes the box of flares on the floor. They all wear the black helmets with the transparent visor, and all three of them have a bullet-proof vest resting at their feet. MIKE looks out the window, then holds one of the guns out in front of him, action movie style. He looks back at LUKE and ADAM, speaking in a hushed tone. MIKE You guys ready? LUKE We can't run out shooting. There's too many out front. MIKE Fuck that. We've got firepower now. LUKE Trust me. We'll go out the back window again. MIKE rolls his eyes. MIKE They're expecting us to go that way. ADAM What we need is a diversion. MIKE and LUKE both turn their heads to look at ADAM. CUT TO: EXT. POLICE STATION - DAY The front door to the police station opens ever so slightly, and none of the beasts seem to notice. Suddenly, three lighted flares are thrown out from the door. As the flares start smoking, a number of the aliens turn to see what the commotion is. With the aliens distracted, the front door to the building closes. INT. POLICE STATION The boys pick up their bullet-proof shields as they run towards the tiny office they came in through. Each of the boys has a single gun drawn, with many others securely holstered against their body. Clearly more firepower than they'd ever need. LUKE rushes back to where they came in, and starts pushing the desk away from the window as soon as the other two boys run in. ADAM steps back as two aliens grapple to climb through the open window. As arms flail outwards, desperately seeking flesh to tear, MIKE draws a handgun and fires two bullets into the heads of two aliens. The bullets impact in a shower of slimy green gore. The few surrounding aliens start to retreat slowly from the window. MIKE Oh no, you fuckers can't run now! MIKE runs towards the window, and leans out. EXT. BEHIND POLICE STATION MIKE looks at the aliens lumbering around the building. Four are within striking distance, but MIKE doesn't seem too concerned. He holds his weapon at eye level and fires at anything that crosses his path. Aliens fall over left and right as MIKE fires wildly. He lets out a joyous scream of delight after pumping off a few rounds. He leans back into the police station. INT. POLICE STATION MIKE holds his gun above his head in victory. He cheers himself on as ADAM struggles to keep from laughing. MIKE looks at ADAM and laughs. MIKE I think I found my calling. MIKE starts to laugh as LUKE impatiently pushes him out of the way and starts crawling out the window. LUKE Let's go. Now! LUKE jumps out the window. The other two follow obediently. BACK TO: INT. WEST HILL SECONDARY SCHOOL - HALLWAY BUFF continues to play the drums. TODD can be heard yelling as he comes running down the hall. His voice grows louder as he gets closer. BUFF puts down his drumsticks and turns to face TODD, who is almost out of breath when he arrives. TODD They're gone. The fire's out and they're not on the roof. BUFF Who? TODD Who?!? Everybody! Adam, Luke, Mike, they're all gone! BUFF Where'd they go? TODD rolls his eyes, growing very impatient. TODD Find them. Check all the windows. We need to keep this place sealed! TODD runs back down the hallway. BUFF (confused) What? Hey, Todd! TODD either can't hear BUFF, or (more likely) is ignoring him. BUFF gets to his feet and sighs, then starts running after TODD. BACK TO: EXT. BEHIND POLICE STATION - DAY With his shield up, LUKE walks back towards the high school at a leisurely pace. He uses his other hand to hold up a handgun and fire at anything that walks into his path. MIKE puts another clip in his gun and begins firing. The three boys blast at aliens left and right, and the body count climbs quickly as the beasts are remorselessly killed. A single head shot drops these monsters easily. The boys walk across what remains of the chain link fence, quickening their pace slightly. They clearly feel none of the tension or terror that plagued their dash to the police station. MIKE and LUKE laugh loudly. BACK TO: INT. WEST HILL SECONDARY SCHOOL - MAIN HALLWAY Hearing the gunshots, TODD runs towards a classroom door. The door is blocked by three large, heavy tables. TODD pauses, holding his breath. He motions for BUFF to do the same, but BUFF just flashes a confused look. TODD listens intently for any sign that there could be aliens in the classroom. Hearing only more distant gunshots, TODD starts pushing the tables out of the way. BUFF walks up to the door and starts giving TODD a hand. Once the tables are out of the way, TODD opens the classroom door. Seeing nothing dangerous, he walks in and BUFF follows. INT. CLASSROOM The room is untouched. Desks are still arranged in rows, and next week's homework assignment is still posted on the blackboard. Through the two large windows on the far wall, TODD and BUFF are able to get a clear view of the football field. They clearly see LUKE, ADAM, and MIKE walking back towards the school, guns blazing. TODD holds his hand up to his forehead. TODD What the hell are they doing? BUFF They're dressed like a bomb squad. CUT TO: EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD The number of aliens separating LUKE, ADAM, and MIKE from the high school doesn't seem nearly as great as it had before. It's almost as if these monstrous beasts were trying to run away, in spite of their sluggish movements. LUKE leads the path down the field as he unloads his gun into any alien that stands in his way. He runs far ahead of the other two boys. MIKE and ADAM have their own preoccupations, busily killing beasts themselves. For these boys, in the heat of the moment, killing is fun. LUKE notices an alien staggering away from him just off to his side. LUKE runs up to the alien, without any fear, and gets just beyond arm's reach of the monster. He holds up his shield, in case the creature takes a swing, and he raises his handgun to the back of the alien's head. He squeezes the trigger. The visor on his helmet is sprayed with thick, green ooze. The huge beast collapses in a heap in the middle of the football field. LUKE drops the shield to free his left hand, then throws off his helmet. He picks up the shield, then turns to holler at MIKE. LUKE These things have quite a kick, eh? Neither MIKE nor ADAM pay much notice, as they try to catch up to LUKE. He starts to laugh. He stops for a moment, and notices there are no creatures approaching. If anything, they're retreating. He smiles as he decides to leave his shield. Instead, he holsters his handgun and pulls out a shotgun. He wields it in front of him as he runs towards the school. MIKE and ADAM follow. INT. CLASSROOM TODD and BUFF watch as the three boys run towards them. From their perspective, they can see the boys have almost reached the goal posts closest to the school, and are quickly approaching this classroom window. TODD rubs his forehead. Suddenly, a huge hulking alien steps in front of the window. TODD and BUFF instinctively jump back. The alien turns to face them, and smashes the window with a swift swing from one of it's massive arms. It lets out a loud roar as it flashes it's teeth and climbs through the window. Without hesitation TODD runs for the door. He literally jumps out into the hallway. BUFF quickly follows. INT. MAIN HALLWAY TODD turns to slam the door shut. He swings the door with all his might, but the door stops an inch before closing, as the tips of the creature's fingers protrude through the door jam. The creature moans and growls loudly. TODD and BUFF push against the classroom door with every ounce of strength they can muster. Suddenly, two huge claws smash through the top of the door, inches away from tearing into TODD's head. BUFF lets out a small yelp. There is a loud bang, and the fingers in the door jam slowly slide down to the floor. As the aliens massive body collapses against the door, it is forced open as TODD and BUFF are tossed backwards. BUFF looks at the dead monster. He slowly starts crawling away from it. Past the massive alien corpse which lies in the middle of the doorway, TODD can see into the classroom. There LUKE stands with his shotgun pointed at the alien's body. The barrel of the gun still smokes. LUKE's eyes meet TODD's for a moment. LUKE raises his eyebrows, then turns around. INT. CLASSROOM LUKE starts to help MIKE and ADAM in through the window. The two make quite a racket as they tumble through the window, as their helmets, shields, and firearms scrape along the ground. Ensuring they've got everything they need, the three boys climb over the dead alien and into the hallway. MIKE laughs as he sees the alien body, and makes a point of stomping on it as hard as he can as he climbs into the hallway. INT. MAIN HALLWAY MIKE is the last of the three boys to stumble over the creature into the hallway. LUKE immediately sets down his shotgun and starts to push the body back into the classroom. The beast is immensely heavy, so MIKE and ADAM quickly help LUKE move the body. ADAM makes a disgusted groan, as he turns his head away from the beast. TODD watches intently, as he is eager for LUKE's attention. TODD is clearly not pleased. BUFF hasn't moved from his spot on the floor. With the body safely pushed into the classroom, LUKE shuts the door. He starts pushing the heavy desks back into place. ADAM looks at TODD, then holds out his handgun to show him. ADAM (to TODD) You've got to check this out. We're armed and dangerous now. TODD is clearly very upset, but is doing his very best to remain civil and calm. TODD You guys let the fire go out. LUKE hears the remark but ignores it. ADAM It's no big deal, we can light the fire again. You should see all the shit we got. Shotguns, a couple semi-automatics... MIKE (pumping his shotgun) Gonna make those alien mother fuckers wish they'd never landed on this shitty planet. MIKE and ADAM laugh hysterically, while TODD just shakes his head. LUKE doesn't contribute to the conversation, as he barricades the door with the desks. He is, however, clearly unhappy with TODD's attitude. TODD That fire is the only way we'll ever... LUKE immediately spins around. He cannot control his temper. LUKE Would you forget about the fucking fire?! We've got protection now. TODD We didn't need guns. Even if we did, we can't let the fire go out. LUKE walks closer to TODD, so that he is standing between TODD and BUFF. LUKE (furious) You expect me to sit there and stare at a fire? I'd rather listen to girls argue about shoes. Who voted you leader, anyway? TODD just shakes his head. BUFF stands up. BUFF (to LUKE) Why can't you just apologize? LUKE immediately spins around and belts BUFF in the chin. The tubby boy is knocked backwards. He holds his chin as a tiny amount of blood dribbles down out his lip. He is as confused as he is scared. There is a moment of silence as everyone freezes. LUKE stares down at BUFF with a vicious glare, his fists still raised. TODD takes a cautious step backwards. MIKE starts to laugh. LUKE straightens out his body and lowers his fists. He picks his shotgun up off the ground. LUKE I'll go restart the fire. LUKE starts walking down the hallway towards the stairwell. MIKE follows quickly behind him. TODD and BUFF look at ADAM, who looks back with a blank expression. ADAM pauses before walking down the hall, chasing after the other two boys. TODD walks over to BUFF and helps him back up. There is an awkward pause as BUFF is reluctant to look TODD in the eyes. TODD You okay? BUFF Fine. With BUFF back on his feet, the two start walking down the hall in the direction opposite of the one the other three boys took. CUT TO: INT. BOYS BATHROOM - LATER BUFF washes his face in the sink, examining his reflection in the mirror. The bleeding has nearly stopped. TODD stands just off to his side, leaning by the doorway. BUFF No one's going to find us. TODD If we keep the fire going, somebody will. BUFF They just broke into a police station. We're alone. BUFF cups his hands beneath the faucet, then splashes more water on his face. He looks over at TODD, who seems to be biting his lip; he's got too much sympathy for BUFF to argue. In the distance they can both hear guns being fired from the roof. BUFF Let's get out of here. TODD Where are we going to go? BUFF Anywhere. Back to the motel. We could probably even make it into town. TODD rubs the back of his neck, reluctant. BUFF I don't want to stay. Not with them. TODD We'd never make it. There's too many... BUFF (interrupting) If we each had a gun, we could go wherever we wanted. Easy. TODD You think they're gonna let us just have a gun? BUFF Adam might. TODD is caught off guard; BUFF does have a point. TODD is still unsure about leaving the safety of the school. TODD Just stay out of their way. It's a big school. BUFF rolls his eyes as he thumbs the wound on his lip. He faces the mirror again. CUT TO: EXT. ROOF - AFTERNOON Shots ring out in the air. There is an awful lot of gunfire coming from the roof. LUKE stands at the edge of the roof, his handgun raised in front of him. It is aimed towards a group of alien monsters grouping around the windows. He shoots round after round into the horde, his face filled with anger. A few of the aliens topple over. LUKE cheers himself loudly, then turns to face MIKE and ADAM. LUKE I should have just shot that fucking idiot right between the eyes. MIKE chuckles, but otherwise not much of a reaction is stirred. MIKE turns his attention back to the other edge of the roof. LUKE I mean, fuck, we were here first, right? They don't even go to this fucking school! ADAM shakes his head and chuckles to himself. He starts to reload the rifle in his hands. LUKE rubs his forehead, takes a deep breath, and walks over to MIKE. MIKE rests on a knee at the edge of the roof, the butt end of a rifle pressed tightly against his shoulder. He aims at an alien wandering aimlessly in the parking lot. LUKE stands over him, encouraging him. LUKE Come on, you've got him. You've got him. MIKE inhales deeply, then squeezes off another shot. He misses the creature. LUKE raises his handgun and fires at the same alien, but he also misses. ADAM stands behind both of them, oblivious to their shots. He finishes loading his rifle. LUKE turns to ADAM. LUKE Give me the rifle. ADAM hands the rifle to LUKE, who gets down on one knee. He mutters to himself as he aims at the beast they have been unable to hit. LUKE (muttering to himself) That's it. I got you. Come here. It's okay. LUKE inhales deeply and fires. A hole is blown through he back of the alien's head, and it collapses in a heap. MIKE and ADAM cheer loudly as the creature dies. LUKE looks up at them and shakes their hands. ADAM Nice work! LUKE turns away, where he can see dozens of the beasts staggering about the parking lot. If anything, these monsters are certainly persistent. LUKE I've got an idea. You guys wanna have some fun? MIKE and ADAM look at each other in confusion. CUT TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY LUKE, MIKE, and ADAM come running down the stairwell into the first floor hallway. They each carry a shotgun, and have two handguns tucked into their pants on either sides of their hip. Still wearing the riot gear uniforms, they seem united in their drive to succeed. They run towards a classroom door. The heavy wooden desk blocking the door is quickly pushed aside, and the three boys run into the classroom. At the other end of the hall, BUFF watches. He hangs his head, knowing nothing good can come of this. INT. HISTORY CLASSROOM This room has clearly already been gutted. Only two desks remain, both lying on their side, with legs bent or ripped off. The walls of the room are decorated with several maps and a large poster of Albert Einstein. The three boys lower their weapons as they walk up to the windows aligning the far wall. Through the window, they can see a handful of aliens staggering about. LUKE fearlessly walks right up to the window and starts tapping on the glass. MIKE and ADAM laugh aloud, then do the same. The aliens turn and face the window, in recognition of the sound. Slowly more and more beasts look towards the window, and begin to hobble nearer. MIKE starts to hoot loudly, trying to attract the aliens to come closer. LUKE raises his shotgun up to the window, and starts to tap it against the window pane. LUKE Come here, sweetheart. Got something for you. The aliens begin to approach closer. As one comes within arm's reach, all three boys take a step backwards and raise their shotguns. MIKE lets out a loud holler of excitement as five aliens press themselves against the window. Aliens claws shatter the glass, and start trying to climb into the building. With great pleasure, LUKE, MIKE, and ADAM begin to fire round after round into these awful creatures. Alien heads explode, soaking the room in green gore, and the bloody bodies fly backwards, knocking over more aliens. Bullets rip into the bodies of the monsters, but only those hit directly in the head show any weakness. As shots ring out, the aliens still alive start trying to run away as fast as their small legs will carry their hulking bodies. They move agonizingly slow, and the boys show no mercy in slaughtering these aliens. All three boys are splatter in gore, but aren't hesitant in the least in disposing these beasts. LUKE quickly runs out of shotgun shells, and pulls out his handguns. All three boys shoot the creatures relentlessly, firing more bullets than a John Woo movie. CUT TO: INT. CAFETERIA TODD and BUFF sit in the corner of the cafeteria, listening intently as gunshots echo through the school. TODD They're going to run out of ammo before the end of the day. BUFF tries to force a smile. He reaches into a cardboard box beside him, and takes out the last bag of pretzels. He rips it open and starts to eat them. TODD rubs his hands together, noticing how worn they appear. His nails definitely need to be trimmed. He is suddenly startled as another, louder gunshot echoes through the building. He looks over at BUFF. TODD Maybe we should just stay near the music room. BUFF Good idea. The two boys quickly but calmly gather their things and run off down the hallway. CUT TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY LUKE, MIKE, and ADAM walk out of the classroom and slam the door behind them. They don't even bother to reinforce the it, they just keep walking down the hallway. They hoot and holler loudly as they walk towards the cafeteria. MIKE tries to slip his handgun into his pocket, but it won't fit. MIKE Hey, did you guys pick up a holster? I'm sick of shoving this thing in my pants. LUKE Don't worry, it makes it look bigger. ADAM and LUKE start to laugh. They walk into the cafeteria. INT. CAFETERIA Draped in guns of every conceivable size, the three boys thunder into the cafeteria as though they were each coming back from an enjoyable sexual conquest. An afternoon spent killing aliens has gotten their adrenaline pumping. MIKE puts down his weapons and reaches into the vending machine. Only a dozen or so chocolate bars remain in the machine. MIKE pulls out two and tosses one to ADAM. Meanwhile, LUKE walks over to the stacks of boxes in the corner. He starts going through them, finding only empty bags of potato chips and pretzels. LUKE start going through the boxes more furiously as his temper flares. LUKE (angry) Where are all the pretzels? MIKE and ADAM stop eating their chocolate bars and turn to face LUKE. They shrug, confused. LUKE (getting angrier) God dammit! Who ate all the fucking pretzels?! LUKE storms into the cafeteria's kitchen, looking for more salty snacks. MIKE and ADAM can hear him literally tearing the room apart. LUKE is really pissed off, and he comes storming back into the cafeteria muttering to himself. LUKE (furious) All the chips, the pretzels, the peanuts, they're gone. That fat mother fucker ate them all. MIKE Son of a bitch! LUKE I haven't had any. Not a single pretzel. This is our fucking school! MIKE Yeah! LUKE paces and shakes his head. This menial snack problem has set him off in a rage. He reaches in his pocket and pulls out his handgun. LUKE That's it. I'm not taking anymore from these cockmasters. MIKE lets out a devious laugh as he pulls out his handgun. LUKE storms out of the cafeteria and down the hallway, absolutely furious. MIKE and ADAM follow closely behind, with guns drawn. INT. MAIN HALLWAY The three boys start moving faster and faster down the hallway. LUKE leads the charge, charging forward with his gun held out in front of him. Caught in the rush of the moment, MIKE and ADAM run behind LUKE with the same vicious ferocity. CUT TO: INT. HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER BUFF sits on the floor with his back against a locker. He tries to read a book, but is soon distracted by the sound of approaching footsteps. He looks up from his pages to see the three armed boys come around the corner at the other end of the hallway. LUKE leads MIKE and ADAM, the three of them charging as fast as their legs will carry them. LUKE holds his handgun out in front of him, ADAM carries a shotgun, and MIKE also holds a handgun. As the boys get closer, BUFF starts getting to his feet. A look of absolute panic washes over his face. LUKE approaches first, and BUFF takes a step backwards in fear. BUFF is pressed up against the locker as LUKE walks right up to him. The look in LUKE's eyes is one of pure rage. MIKE and ADAM stand behind LUKE with their guns out in front of them. LUKE raises his handgun so that the barrel is aimed right between BUFF's eyes. BUFF's bottom lip begins to quiver and his jaw drops fear. He raises his arms. BUFF (terrified) Whoa! Wha... what are you doing? LUKE You fat, mushy little bitch. You ate all the pretzels! BUFF I'm... I, I can't eat the ch-ch choc... I'm allergic to nuts... CUT TO: INT. MUSIC ROOM TODD has his head buried in a storage closet, looking for useful tools. Hearing all the commotion, he pokes his head out. Through the door he can see LUKE with a gun pointed at BUFF's face. TODD nervously runs to the door. BACK TO: INT. HALLWAY TODD comes running out the door, stopping beside LUKE and BUFF. TODD What the hell-- MIKE immediately turns his handgun, aiming it at TODD. MIKE Don't move. TODD throws his arms up and freezes. LUKE doesn't take his eyes, or his gun, off BUFF. LUKE You barge into our school, eat all of our food, and not even a "thank you." You've got some balls on you, Buff. BUFF tries to swallow the lump in his throat, his body trembling. He's too frightened to speak. TODD Luke-- MIKE Shut up! TODD Guys, listen-- In a split second LUKE turns his gun in TODD's direction and begins firing wildly in the walls around him. None of the hits come close to TODD, and LUKE clearly isn't trying to kill him -- merely scare him. It worked, as TODD appears to have nearly suffered a heart attack. On the verge of tears, TODD has never appeared this scared before. LUKE I wasn't even aiming for you, you fucking pussy. ADAM also appears to be in shock. He doesn't say anything, doesn't even seem to register his surroundings. He simply stands with the other boys, his shotgun pointed in front of him. LUKE turns and moves in closer to BUFF, pressing the gun right into his face. LUKE You just remember, I can kill you anytime I want. I'm in control. BUFF gives a sheepish nod and LUKE takes a step back. LUKE I'm sick of feeding you guys. Buff, you and your girlfriend are officially on a diet. No crackers, no candy, not even a fucking napkin. You wanna eat, you find your own food. The food in the cafeteria is our food. LUKE looks at TODD, then walks right up to his face. LUKE Anybody got a problem with that? TODD looks over at an expressionless ADAM, whose gun is aimed at the same spot as everyone else's -- TODD's forehead. TODD lowers his head and takes a deep breath. He nods. TODD No problem. LUKE Good. LUKE lowers his weapon, with MIKE and ADAM quickly doing the same. LUKE smiles, and even manages a devious little chuckle, he turns and begins walking back down the hallway. ADAM follows him. MIKE pushes BUFF's head against the lockers, laughs maliciously, and then runs after LUKE and ADAM. As the three armed boys wander off down the hall, TODD and BUFF look at each other. Each one looks in absolute fear for their lives, much the same way they did when they were first attacked by the aliens. These boys have found themselves in a truly terrible position. CUT TO: EXT. WEST HILL SECONDARY SCHOOL - NIGHT The fire on the roof of the school continues to burn brightly, but there is no longer anyone watching it. Dozens and dozens and dozens of the beasts now encircle the school. There are more of these alien monsters in the area than ever before. A few of the creatures pound on the walls and windows, but it proves a futile effort given how well most of the building has been boarded up. CUT TO: INT. MUSIC ROOM - LATER TODD lies fast asleep in the corner of the room, with an old jacket wrapped around him like a blanket. Other than the gentle rhythm of his breathing, TODD doesn't move. BUFF is beside him, sitting up. He looks over at TODD, then examines his surroundings. The room is completely dark and totally silent, other than the distant sounds of alien shuffling and groaning. BUFF is clearly going over something in his head, and he seems to be quite conflicted. After a moment of hesitation, BUFF quietly gets to his feet and walks out of the music room. INT. HALLWAY BUFF walks out into the darkened hallway, and begins walking towards the gym. The sound of his footsteps echo through the massive, empty building. The distant sound of dozens of alien monsters clawing at the walls is ominous, the noise seeming to come from every direction. BUFF moves as quietly as he can through the school. CUT TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER He reaches the gym doors and gently pushes one of them open. He squeezes into the gym, careful not to make any noise. INT. GYM LUKE, MIKE, and ADAM are all asleep on gym mats, encircled around a small fire in garbage can. BUFF stands at the gym doors and stares at the three boys. He is definitely not getting near them until he is positive they are asleep. He watches their chests expand and contract as they breath. He inches towards them one slow pace at a time. As BUFF gets closer he can see that both LUKE and MIKE sleep with their handgun at their feet, while ADAM holds his unloaded shotgun like a teddy bear. BUFF can even hear a slight snore from ADAM. This is enough to convince him that these boys are asleep. BUFF starts moving towards the duffel bag full of weapons. He carefully eyes the three other boys, especially LUKE. This is likely one of the bravest things BUFF has ever done, and the terror he feels clearly registers on his face. He gets to the duffel bag and kneels down in front of it. Looking down at the bag, BUFF sees he will have to unzip it to open it. He softly grasp the zipper with one hand, then focuses his attention on LUKE's face. Using all his strength to remain as quiet as possible, BUFF slowly unzips the bag. It makes a tiny noise, and BUFF panics when he thinks he sees LUKE twitch. BUFF stops and takes a deep breath. LUKE remains motionless. BUFF swallows the lump in his throat and unzips the bag the rest of the way. BUFF carefully reaches in and pulls out an automatic handgun. He is careful not to knock the gun against anything near the bag -- he can't risk making a single sound. BUFF gets to his feet with the gun in his hand. He can finally smile, as it looks as though he's going to get away with his scheme. He holds the gun out in front of him, and aims it at LUKE. BUFF begins to nod as his smile grows wider. He lowers his weapon and begins to walk away. What BUFF failed to notice was that his foot had become entangled with the strap on the duffel bag. As he tries to walk away, he pulls the bag along with him, and it makes a very loud noise as it drags along the ground. LUKE and MIKE awake instantly, while ADAM groggily looks up. BUFF freezes, like a deer in headlights. LUKE looks over at BUFF. LUKE What the fuck? BUFF snaps out of his shock and runs out of the gym. LUKE jumps to his feet. LUKE Mother fucker! Both LUKE and MIKE grab their handguns and race after BUFF. ADAM still isn't fully conscious. CUT TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER All of the boys run at full speed. LUKE and MIKE chase after BUFF as fast as their legs will carry them. BUFF pants loudly as he charges down the hall. Sweat pours from his forehead as he literally runs for his life. Their footsteps echo loudly through the hallways. LUKE (shouting) I'm gonna kill you, bitch! LUKE and MIKE no longer seem like teenage boys. They are merciless death soldiers, powered by hate and rage. Their fury is clearly apparent. LUKE holds his handgun out in front of him and fires a few bullets wildly in BUFF's direction. BACK TO: INT. MUSIC ROOM At the sound of gunshots, TODD jumps awake. He immediately gets to his feet and runs to the door. BACK TO: INT. GYM ADAM still wipes the sleep out of his eyes. Hearing the gunshots, he is immediately brought out of his stupor and he jumps to his feet. He picks up his shotgun and the duffel bag full of guns, then runs out of the gym and down the hallway. BACK TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY LUKE and MIKE continue to chase after BUFF at full speed. BUFF screams loudly as LUKE fires a few more shots in his direction. MIKE laughs at the sound of BUFF's screams. LUKE isn't amused. He wants blood. LUKE pushes himself to run faster and faster. BUFF isn't more than twenty feet into front of him now. CUT TO: INT. HALLWAY TODD looks out from the door. He can hear that the footsteps are approaching in this direction. TODD runs over to the stairwell, climbing to the top of it. BACK TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY As LUKE and MIKE push themselves to move faster, the gap between them and BUFF grows smaller and smaller. They approach a corner which turns towards the music room. BUFF turns in that direction. INT. HALLWAY Turning the corner, BUFF stops near the stairwell. He turns and raises his gun. Little does he know that from where he stands, TODD can very clearly see him. LUKE and MIKE come charging around the corner, both with their weapons out in front of them. They stop in their tracks when they see BUFF with a gun pointed at them. BUFF Put them down! LUKE Fuck you, asshole. You may get one of us, but you won't get out of here alive. Both LUKE and MIKE steady their weapons, which are clearly pointed at BUFF. What we have here is a Mexican stand-off. BUFF tries to remain calm and assertive, but he's ready to burst into tears at any moment. BUFF Just put the guns down. We'll leave. LUKE (furious) You put the gun down. BUFF No. LUKE (building rage) Put the fucking gun down! BUFF No. LUKE (exploding rage) Put the fucking gun down!! MIKE (calmer, but still malicious) You're gonna fucking die, bitch. The gun in BUFF's hand begins to tremble as his fears begin to get the better of him. CUT TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY ADAM comes out of the gym, his shotgun aimed in front of him and the duffel bag full of weapons slung over his shoulder. Running at full speed, he goes around to the other side of the music room. It's obvious that ADAM isn't exactly sure where he's going, he's just following the sound of shouting voices. Tightly gripping his shotgun, ADAM doesn't really understand what's happening. He slows down as he approaches the corner, careful to make sure that the other boys don't hear him coming. He stops and puts his back to the wall. He tries to catch his breath, listening intently to the boys as they continue to shout back and forth. Although ADAM can't see what's going on, he raises his shotgun so that it is pointed square in front of him. His finger slides along the trigger, both anxious and nervous. BACK TO: INT. HALLWAY BUFF can hardly keep his weapon straight, his hand is shaking so much. He is clearly terrified, and very near tears. LUKE and MIKE, on the other hand, show no sign of fear. BUFF (pleading) Please... come on, guys... LUKE You fat little fuck. The rage starts to build in BUFF. Realizing there's no way out of this situation, LUKE's insulting remarks are enough for BUFF to try and make a final attempt to stand up for himself. BUFF grinds his teeth as his finger squeezes the trigger on his gun. It clicks empty. All the color suddenly drains from BUFF's face as he realizes his luck has run out. A smile begins to form at the corner of LUKE's mouth. There is a moment of hesitation as the three boys stare at each other, before BUFF takes off in the opposite direction as fast as he can. Instinctively, LUKE begins firing shots in BUFF's direction, all of which miss. BUFF pushes himself as fast as he can, only a few feet from turning the corner into the hallway. Little does BUFF know, that's where ADAM waits with his anxious shotgun. BACK TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY As shots from LUKE's gun slam into the walls near ADAM, he gets very agitated and tightens his grip on his shotgun. Suddenly, BUFF comes running around the corner, right into the line of fire of ADAM's weapon. BUFF's sudden appearance startles ADAM, who squeezes the trigger. BUFF is shot almost point blank in the chest. He is sent flying backwards as blood spurts out of his wounds. Watching the events from the stairwell above, TODD throws his hand over his mouth to keep from screaming. ADAM is the most shocked, as he lets his arms drop to his side and the shotgun slip from his hands. He looks as though he could cry at any moment. MIKE smiles, but LUKE shows no expression as all. He simply stares at BUFF as the dying boy gasps his final breath. Blood gurgles up his throat and begins to pour out the side of his mouth. LUKE starts to reload his handgun. LUKE Just one more to take care of. Hearing that, TODD immediately picks himself up and runs down the second-floor hallway. LUKE and MIKE stop suddenly, hearing TODD run down the hall. Without hesitation, LUKE runs towards the stairwell. MIKE follows quickly behind, and the hunt for TODD begins. ADAM doesn't move. He remains standing above BUFF's lifeless corpse. With the other boys gone, ADAM can finally cry. CUT TO: INT. SECOND-FLOOR HALLWAY LUKE and MIKE rush up the stairwell, two steps at a time, pausing once they reach the top. The hallway is totally dark and absolutely still. The hallway is lined with lockers and doors leading to classrooms. Although some of the doors are barricaded, most are still ajar. It seems the boys didn't secure the second-floor nearly as thoroughly as they did the main floor. There is an eerie calmness about it, given the boys intentions. LUKE walks down the hallway one cautious step at the time, careful not to make any noise. With his weapon held out in front of him in attack position, LUKE looks like a sadistic, teenage Elmer Fudd hunting rabbits. CUT TO: INT. CLASSROOM TODD lies under a large, wooden teacher's desk. He is sitting in the fetal position, his arms tightly wrapped around his knee. His face is soaked, an unhealthy mix of tears and sweat. TODD has never looked this scared before. Not only is his life in danger, but for the very first time, TODD is utterly alone. While TODD tries to keep himself together, doing his best not to give away his position, he is clearly at the end of his proverbial rope. BACK TO: INT. SECOND-FLOOR HALLWAY LUKE continues to scan the classroom doors, anxious for any hint of where he could find TODD. LUKE moistens his lips and perks up his ears. The hallway is deathly silent, but LUKE carefully listens for the smallest sound -- any sound -- that could give him a tactical advantage. Without warning, the hallway becomes deafeningly loud. MIKE, who stood only a few metres behind LUKE, suddenly kicks in one of the classroom doors and begins firing wildly into it. LUKE jumps at the startling sound, turns to face MIKE, then walks over to him. Both of the young men walk over to the doorway of MIKE's designated target. Although the room is dark, it has been cleared of all desks, chairs, and tables. Obviously TODD isn't hiding in here, and likely never was. LUKE flashes a dirty look at MIKE, but doesn't dwell on it. He checks his weapon. LUKE Let's check 'em all. He's gotta be here somewhere. LUKE then walks over to the next closest classroom door and kicks it in. He walks inside. INT. CLASSROOM A A few tables have been nailed up against the windows, but for the most part this classroom still has a full compliment of desks. Even the large oak teacher's desk still sits at the front of the room, untouched. The only disarray in here is in the corner, where two tables have been overturned. The computers that sat atop them lay smashed on the floor. LUKE raises his shotgun, slowly aiming it around the room. It is deadly quiet, and very dark. LUKE takes two silent, cautious steps. He notices the mess in the corner and starts to walk towards it. Behind either one of these tables on their side would make a perfect hiding spot. LUKE holds his weapon out in front of him as he approaches. CUT TO: INT. CLASSROOM B MIKE kicks in the door to another classroom and charges inside. Most of the desks have been cleared out, but there are plenty bent and broken chairs in a heap in the middle of the room. All that really remains is a massive teacher's desk, flipped onto it's side. MIKE sees this and smiles. He pulls out a handgun, releases the safety, and begins to strut towards the desk. MIKE (menacing) I see you! MIKE moves in right in beside the desk with his gun out in front of him. In a wildly dramatic gesture, he leaps around the desk, but finds nothing. BACK TO: INT. CLASSROOM A LUKE jumps around to the other side of the overturned tables, and also finds nothing. He grinds his teeth in anger, then kicks one of the smashed computers on the ground. He takes a moment to regain his composure, then walks back out into the hallway. INT. SECOND-FLOOR HALLWAY LUKE walks out into the hallway almost at the same time as MIKE. Now it's MIKE's turn to give LUKE the shameful looks. MIKE Are you sure he's up here? LUKE Ah, fuck right off. You heard it, too. He's up here somewhere. BACK TO: INT. CLASSROOM TODD cranes his neck around the side of the large wooden desk. Through the doorway of the classroom, he can just barely see both LUKE and MIKE. They are apparently fighting over something, although from this distance their whispers are much too faint to be discerned. TODD tries to focus on them, maybe to see what their plans are. Unfortunately, TODD can barely see anything from this angle. He crouches back under beneath the desk as quietly as he can. He exhales softly but deeply. He's trapped under here, and even if he were to make it out there's nowhere for him to run. This is a truly dire situation for TODD. BACK TO: INT. SECOND-FLOOR HALLWAY LUKE kicks in the door to another classroom and charges inside. BACK TO: INT. CLASSROOM TODD shuts his eyes, as LUKE sounds very close. He may very well be in this room. TODD bites his lip. CUT TO: INT. CLASSROOM C Although this is a different classroom, it looks almost identical to the one in which TODD is hiding. With no other hiding spots in the room, LUKE aims his shotgun squarely at the large teacher's desk. He fires a shot directly into the side of the desk. BACK TO: INT. CLASSROOM TODD opens his eyes. He's not dead. He cautiously cranes his neck out from behind the desk, to see that LUKE isn't in the room. BACK TO: INT. CLASSROOM C LUKE charges around the desk and finds it empty. He stomps his feet in anger, now being very upset. He charges out of the room. BACK TO: INT. CLASSROOM Both LUKE and MIKE charge into this classroom. TODD tries to hold his breath, as both boys who are stalking him are most obviously in this room. They each have their guns aimed out in front of them. LUKE brings his shotgun up to his chest, carefully aiming directly for the desk that TODD is hiding behind. Suddenly, his attention is diverted. Both he and MIKE hear a crashing noise coming from down the hall. They take a moment to look at each other in confusion. TODD clenches his fists in anxiety. He is absolutely petrified. MIKE (to LUKE) Did you hear that? MIKE lowers his gun, but LUKE keeps his aimed squarely forward. MIKE tugs on LUKE's arm as he tries to investigate the noise. MIKE Come on! LUKE turns and looks MIKE squarely in the eyes. Their confrontation is quickly interrupted by the sound of ADAM's voice. ADAM (O.S.) (yelling) Guys! Get down here! MIKE immediately starts to walk out of the room. LUKE is far more hesitant. TODD suffers in agony, with every second they're in room seeming like an eternity. LUKE keeps his shotgun poised. ADAM (O.S.) (louder) Guys! LUKE lowers his shotgun and runs out of the classroom. He doesn't look impressed that TODD got away. He heads back out into the hall. As TODD breathes a sigh of relief, he can hear both the young men heading back down the stairwell. TODD wipes the sweat off his brow and smiles. CUT TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY - LATER LUKE and MIKE charge down the stairwell and into the main hallway. BUFF's lifeless corpse remains slouched in the corner in a bloody heap. ADAM stands at the far end of the hallway, just a few feet in front of the door leading to the History classroom. The door isn't barricaded. ADAM holds the shotgun in his arms, and has it aimed straight at the door. The tears in his eyes have been swept away, and now the young man looks absolutely terrified. LUKE and MIKE run up beside him. LUKE (to ADAM) What's the matter? ADAM doesn't even need to respond. The three boys can clearly hear the sound of something big and mean lurking behind the door. In fact, it sounds as though there is more than one horrible beasts in the building. Something begins to faintly scratch at the classroom door. The three boys remain completely silent, overcome with fear. MIKE slowly moves his hand over the handgun poking out of his pants. The scratching at the door becomes more violent, and the door begins to shake. Suddenly, the entire door frame comes crashing down to the ground, and two alien monsters come tumbling out into the hallway. At last, these creatures have gotten into the school. The two monsters bare their enormous fangs and emit a loud, fierce roar. They outstretch their arms in an offensive position as another monster lumbers out of the doorway behind them. Instantly, all three boys raise their weapons and begin firing at the monsters. LUKE hits the closest square in the chest with his shotgun. The blast knocks the alien back slightly, but doesn't deter it. It lets out a loud bellow in pain before shuffling forward again. BACK TO: INT. CLASSROOM TODD hears both the alien screams and the shots being fired, and gets up from under the teacher's desk. A look of confusion passes over his face as he walks out into the second-floor hallway. INT. SECOND-FLOOR HALLWAY TODD walks over to the stairwell and peers down into the hallway. For this perspective it is very difficult to make anything out, but he can clearly see the three boys pumping off round after round down the hallway. However, TODD can clearly hear more than he can see. Gun shots echo through the hallways, as are the anguished howls of the alien beasts. BACK TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY MIKE seems so good with his handgun, he could compete professionally. He is the first to hit one of the aliens square in the head, and it topples backwards. Green gore bubbles up out of the wound. Two more creatures crawl over that monster's body and into the hallway. As LUKE, MIKE, and ADAM stand at one end of the hallway, in front of a growing horde of horrible beasts, they seem truly unprepared to deal with this. They have faced larger numbers in the past, but they were prepared for those. This is a surprise attack. More and more monsters pour out of the door. LUKE hits one beast in the head, and MIKE hits another two. They all crash into each other, falling into heaps on the ground. However, for each monster the boys hit, another two come out of the door to replace it. LUKE makes another shot to the head with the shotgun, this time causing the alien's head to literally be blown off. Massive chunks of gore are splattered onto the other beasts as the headless creature topples over. ADAM finally nails his first one. The monsters wade through puddles of green blood and trample over the bodies of dead aliens as they inch closer and closer to the boys. After another shot from LUKE's shotgun, one of the alien's has it's arm blown off. Blood pours from the wound, but the beast marches forward, undeterred. ADAM and MIKE fire off a few more shots. Still more monsters wander out the door. LUKE looks down at his shotgun. It's out of ammo. He slings the weapon over his shoulder, then pulls the handgun out of his pants. He slaps in a fresh clip, and his face tightens. LUKE (yelling) Kill 'em all! LUKE starts to fire shots off wildly. ADAM wipes his brow, clearly shocked at the number of aliens that continue to march into the school. He takes a few steps back. MIKE continues to fire with startling accuracy, hitting another two monsters in the face. They topple backwards. The creatures encroach further and further into the hallway. There is easily a dozen inside the building already. ADAM starts to move further back down the hall, away from the aliens, absolutely terrified. He seems to realize this a battle they won't likely win. LUKE fires a few shots, then takes a pause. He starts taking a few steps back as well. MIKE empties his clip, knocking another alien to the ground. Once out of ammo, he turns and looks at the other two boys. He looks invigorated, but ADAM just looks scared. LUKE also has a twinge of reluctance in his face. MIKE I'm outta bullets. ADAM Let's go. One of the aliens growls loudly. The entire hallway seems to shake as the beast bellows at the top of it's lungs. Without waiting for a response from either of the other two boys, ADAM starts running away in the other direction. LUKE and MIKE quickly follow. Two of the massive beasts lunge for BUFF's corpse. One of the monsters buries it's claws into BUFF's chest, while the other rips apart his neck. BUFF's blood is splattered against the wall, and it pools out on the hallway floor. BACK TO: INT. SECOND-FLOOR HALLWAY TODD jumps to his feet and runs back up the stairwell. He runs down the second-floor hallway with a fierce determination. This boy has an idea. This could be his chance to get away from the other boys. This could be his only chance to save his life. He runs down the hallway to the stairwell at the other side. He slows as he reaches it, and begins creeping down the stairs. He is careful to make sure that he is not heard. Peering over the railing, he finds the lower hall deserted. It's the hallway in the library wing of the school. He should be out of harm's way here - the boys are on the other side of the school. He can hear the distant sound of their gun shots echoing through the halls. He shudders as he walks down into the hallway. INT. LIBRARY WING HALLWAY TODD scampers down the hallway, passing endless rows of generic lockers. He runs over to a classroom door, blocked by a heavy desk. He pushes it out of the way, then runs into the classroom. INT. CLASSROOM This classroom is in complete disarray. While it's difficult to make out in the darkness, TODD can clearly see a pile of mangled chairs thrown into the corner. All of the windows on the far wall have been boarded up. TODD walks over to them and gives them his full attention. He immediately begins to rip the boards down off the windows. He struggles to pry them down with his bare hands. He manages to get a few. He picks a metal chair leg up off the ground, and uses it to strip the windows of their barricades. As he pulls down the last board, he sees something through the window. One of the aliens turns towards him. Drool pours out of the beast's massive jaws. It charges towards the window. It lunges at the glass with one of it's giant arms. Before the creature can break into the school, TODD turns and runs. He's halfway through the classroom door when the window pane shatters, the result of a hairy, slimy, hulking alien crashing through it. CUT TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY LUKE, MIKE, and ADAM continue to fire blindly down the hallway. They turn a corner, then position themselves to use the wall as cover. Aliens continue to stumble down the hallway at a plodding pace, inching closer and closer to the boys. These beasts growl loudly, and the sounds of their footsteps fills the hallway. It's too loud for the boys to hear what TODD is up to. LUKE reaches into the duffel bag and pulls out a small pistol. It's fully loaded. He gets down on one knee, with his back against the wall. He holds the weapon in front of him, and takes the safety off. Then he twirls around, firing four shots down the hallway. He manages to strike a single alien, and it collapses onto the ground. MIKE roots through the duffel bag, looking for anything useful. He picks up two clips that would fit his handgun and stuffs them into his pocket. His fingers shuffle past a variety of small pistols, but nothing quite big enough to satisfy him. He gets back to his feet and slaps a full clip into his handgun. ADAM doesn't seem to want to have any part of this. He inches further and further back down the hall, anxious to leave this scene of chaos. MIKE charges towards the aliens. He fires five bullets in quick succession, all but one of which hits their target square in the head. Monstrous alien keel over left and right, and the hallway is quickly becoming choked with the bodies of these beasts. LUKE takes another monster down. Even though these boys seem proficient with their weapons, the situation doesn't seem to be getting any better. More and more creatures continue to pile into the school through the classroom. They're like giant cockroaches - hideous, repulsive creatures arriving in a massive horde, swarming their prey. LUKE pauses a moment to look over at MIKE, who doesn't show any signs of weakening. If anything, MIKE is prepared to fight off these aliens as hard as possible. He's almost anxious. He gives LUKE a mischievous grin, then fires two more shots towards the aliens. BACK TO: INT. LIBRARY WING HALLWAY TODD charges out of the classroom door and down the hallway. Behind him, a lone alien beast stumbles out of the door, it's knuckles dragging alone the ground. The monster seems to have large, jagged shards of glass stuck in it's arm. Green ooze pours out of the wounds. The alien doesn't seem affected by the pain. TODD runs over to another classroom door, at the other end of the hallway. Again, a large wooden desk is blocking the door. TODD gets behind it and starts pushing it out of the way. He looks up to see the giant alien following him. The beast is still at the other end of the hallway, but in the darkness it looks incredibly horrific. This one looks to be at least eight feet tall, with arms like giant tree trunks. As the alien bares it's massive jaws, TODD can clearly see that the jagged fangs are the size of car keys. This is enough to motivate TODD, so he pushes the desk out of the way as quickly as he can. He's acting purely out of fear by this point. He dashes into the classroom. INT. CLASSROOM Not nearly as much has been done to reinforce this room. Two of the windows are covered, but the middle is very clearly exposed. The room is haphazardly lined with desk and chairs, most of which are covered in graffiti and in terrible shape. Through the window, TODD can see some of the aliens aimlessly lumbering around outside. TODD picks up one of the chairs off the ground and hurls it through the window. The glass instantly shatters. The chair crashes through the window and hits one of the alien monsters in the head. A little dazed, it starts to crawl into the school. A few other aliens outside see this and quickly follow suit. TODD twirls around and runs out the door. INT. LIBRARY WING HALLWAY Running out the door, TODD finds himself only a few feet from the creature in the hallway. He stops dead in his tracks. The beast lunges forward, swiping it's massive claws at TODD. He dodges out of the way, but the alien does manage to break the skin on TODD's arm. The young man stumbles forward, away from the beast. The gunshots of the other boys on the other side of the school can be heard echoing through the halls. TODD does his best to push himself away from the monster, but he can't seem to keep from tripping over his own feet in the process. He bolts towards the door of another classroom, this one with several stacks of chairs blocking the entrance. He tries to wrestle one of the chairs free. The alien monster lumbers forward, undeterred. It spreads it's arms wide, ready to attack. Shards of glass still poke out of fresh wounds on this alien's body. TODD finally frees a chair, then takes it with both hands and swings it at the beast. The alien throws both of it's arms up into the air, smashing the chair. All that remains is the splintered chair leg which TODD still holds in his hands. As an act of self-preservation, he drives the chair leg straight into the alien's head, pushing all his weight into it. The beast lets out a fierce shriek as a chair leg is drilled upwards through it's head, impacting right in the middle of it's face. It tumbles backwards, as gooey bits of green and black slime gush from the wounds. TODD throws his body back against the wall as the creature twitches on the ground. Looking up, TODD can see that the hallway is quickly filling with alien creatures. Two more have crawled out of the first classroom TODD opened, and one more out of the second. TODD can clearly hear several more approaching. However, he doesn't seem in the least bit worried. This should make it harder for the other boys to catch him. TODD gets to his feet and runs down the hallway, away from the aliens. He runs all the way to the end of the hallway and turns the corner, heading down a long corridor. INT. HALLWAY Turning the corner, TODD comes running down the hallway. This is a very long corridor, running the length of the school, and were TODD to follow it the whole way it would lead directly to the three other boys. Their gunshots echo through the hallway, and the sound gets louder as TODD approaches. From this position he's out of their sight, but he knows that he's close. Once in the middle of the corridor, TODD turns another corner to another hallway. This hallway is a direct path leading to the gym. TODD rests with he back against the wall, panting loudly. He is exhausted. Looking down the hallway, he can see that he'll easily reach his eventual destination: the gym. There is nothing obstructing his path, the hallway is free of creatures, and the other three boys have no clue as to where he is. TODD peers around the corner. He can hear the alien beasts slowly plodding towards him, but they haven't yet made it to this hallway. TODD takes a moment to examine the wound on his arm. It's not deep, but it sure is painful. He cringes in pain as he rubs his hand over it. It hurts, but he knows he'll be fine. TODD takes a deep breath, then runs towards the gym. The distant sound of gunfire isn't loud enough to muffle the sound of massive alien creatures trudging down the hall. Their respiration is very loud, but also low and deep, like a dog's growl. You can hear their knuckles scrapping against the ground as they walk. Then, one of the beasts turns the corner and comes into view. A slimy green film seems draped over the alien's hairy body, oozing down onto the floor. It haphazardly lumbers down the hallway, swaying as it moves, like a giant drunken gorilla. The alien moves agonizingly slow. It is quickly joined by another two monsters turning the corner, making it's way down the hallway. Soon another alien appears. They growl loudly, and one even emits a huge snarling bellow. As they stumble further and further down the hall, a few more beasts follow behind them. Although they don't move much faster than most senior citizens, these monsters seem infinitely more creepy and vicious than anything on Earth. This is especially true as more of them spill out into the hallway. And they're inching down the hall, moving closer and closer to LUKE, MIKE, and ADAM. BACK TO: INT. MAIN HALLWAY MIKE continues to blast away aliens with frivolous delight. He fires off three quick bullets with his handgun. The first hits the center of a creature's chest, the second blasts it's head apart. The beast slumps backwards in a pool of gore. The third bullet hits another alien just below the knee. The creature stumbles for a moment, then continues moving forward. MIKE does his best to pick aliens off one by one, but there are simply too many of them. LUKE is just firing blindly. He is unaccustomed to firing a weapon, and it's beginning to show. His wrists are straining from the gun's kickback. He lets off another four shots, emptying his clip. None of them come close to hitting any of the aliens. With no ammunition left, LUKE drops his handgun to the ground and starts rubbing his wrists. He peers around the corner. There are easily over a dozen aliens approaching, but they are still a good thirty yards away. The boys aren't in imminent danger yet, but they will have to move soon. LUKE looks over at ADAM, who holds a shotgun in his arms. ADAM just stares at the carnage like a deer in the headlights. He look frozen, expressing nothing but absolute fear, unblinking. He slowly takes a single step backwards, then hesitantly takes another. MIKE slaps another clip into his gun. He instantly fires off four quick rounds, taking another alien down. LUKE picks up his shotgun. He starts to rummage through the duffel bag, looking for shotgun shells. His hand brushes by a small box of them, and he pulls it out. As he reloads, he takes a moment to survey their position. From where the boys are sitting now, they can go three places. First, they can go back the way they came, through a hallway now infested with aliens. Secondly, they could run down to the tech wing hallway, where the auto and wood shops are. Thirdly, they could keep running around the corner, towards the gym. LUKE loads the last shell into his shotgun, then pumps it. He jumps back to his feet and stands beside MIKE, blasting away aliens. Neither of these two boys seem frightened in the least by the horde of monsters. Their faces are plastered with mischievous grins as they pump round after round down the hall. Gobs of green alien blood are splattered against all sides of the hallway as monsters are repeatedly blasted backwards. Several dead alien creatures lie in heaps on the floor, but the other beasts simply climb over them. ADAM takes another step backwards. For a moment, his eyes stray from the boys shooting the aliens, and he looks over at the corridor leading to the gym. His eyes widen in fear as he sees a shadow moving against the wall. Tall and hulking, it doesn't appear to be TODD's shadow. ADAM's jaw drops as he tries to speak. He looks over at LUKE and MIKE, but sound just can't seem to escape his throat. ADAM (straining) Guys! They don't hear him. ADAM (louder, terrified) Guys! MIKE turns around. He sees ADAM standing there, shaking with fear. ADAM's jaw hangs wide open, as though he wants to speak, but is too scared. MIKE walks over to him. LUKE glances over his shoulder, but really pays no attention to their actions. He's too busy killing aliens. MIKE looks over in the same direction ADAM is, and instantly sees the moving shadow. MIKE suddenly realizes that they are being surrounded by these alien monsters. Before MIKE can react, ADAM turns and starts running towards the tech hallway. MIKE immediately begins screaming for him to stop. MIKE (shouting) Adam! What are you doing? LUKE stops firing and turns around. He watches as MIKE chases after ADAM down the hallway. LUKE (shouting) Hey! Mike! Wait! LUKE watches as the other two boys run down the hallway. He isn't about to chase them. He turns back around and faces the alien horde. The beasts are very close now. LUKE can smell their hot breath in the air as they trudge closer and closer. They crawl forward with their arms outstretched and mouths dangling wide open, anxious for a meal of fresh human flesh. LUKE raises his shotgun, aiming directly at one of the beasts. LUKE (to one of the aliens) You want some of this?! LUKE squeezes the trigger, blasting the monster's head off. The teenage boy laughs maniacally, pumping a fresh round into his weapon. He blows off the head of another alien, sending it crashing to the ground. LUKE again laughs and reloads. LUKE (yelling at the aliens) That's right, there's plenty to go around! LUKE takes yet another shot, this time taking a sizable chunk out of an alien's shoulder. It snarls in pain, but continues to move forward. As LUKE reloads, he begins to realize that this is a battle he cannot fight alone. There are simply too many of these aliens coming towards him. He takes a step back, breathing deeply. He raises the gun to his chest and fires at another alien. The creature squeals as shotgun pellets scrape past the side of it's head. LUKE takes another step back. If he doesn't get out of there soon, it'll be too late. At that moment, LUKE picks the duffel bag up off of the ground. He immediately begins to head around the corner, towards the gym. LUKE moves with lightening speed. Completely caught off guard, LUKE almost runs right into an alien. He stops short as the creatures lunges forward, arms outstretched. LUKE lets out a small scream, genuinely scared. Instinctively, LUKE raises his shotgun and blows the alien's head off it. Slimy green blood spurts out of the neck like a fountain. The hairy headless alien stumbles backwards, revealing five other massive beasts lumbering forward. These are obviously the aliens that TODD let in earlier. LUKE grinds his teeth as he looks at the monsters coming towards him. He holds up his shotgun, but he knows it won't be of any use -- there's too many approaching. He has to get to the gym, but his only path has been blocked. Frustrated, he pumps his shotgun and raises it up to his chest. He screams loudly as he fires twice. He is absolutely furious, and this is the best way for him to let out his frustrations. Suddenly, LUKE's face lightens up, as though he were struck with an idea. One of the aliens gurgles loudly as it tries to expose its fangs, while another lets out a ferocious roar. LUKE ignores them, then quickly dashes towards the Girls Washroom. One of the closest alien monsters tries to lunge towards LUKE, but the creature is much too slow. The teenage boy darts through the washroom door. INT. GIRLS WASHROOM A large, generic washroom, with a door in the corner leading into the showers and the girls change room. The second that LUKE makes it into the washroom, he slams the door behind him. He turns the lock in the door, then moves backwards. He adjust the strap of the duffel bag over his shoulder, and tightens the grip on his gun. He exhales loudly as he moves further and further away from the door. He starts moving towards the showers, since through there he could get to the gym. One of the massive creatures smashes through the washroom door behind LUKE, ramming through it shoulder first. The young man jumps suddenly. He throws up his shotgun, squeezing the trigger. The blast connects with the wall beside the beast, sending chunks of brick and plaster flying. The alien marches forward, undeterred. LUKE starts to move faster towards the change room. CUT TO: INT. GYM As TODD tries to climb up onto the stage, he hears the shotgun blast. It sounded really close, and a sudden look of panic strikes TODD's face. He really starts pushing himself to move faster. He gets up onto the stage, then runs over to a ladder along the side wall. This ladder leads up to another level, likely the spot where technical crews did there electrical work when the school worked on plays. TODD gets to the top of ladder, and sees that he has only two places to run: along scaffolding above the stage, or through a door that leads to the second-floor hallway. The determined look on TODD's face implies that he's made his decision. BACK TO: INT. GIRLS WASHROOM LUKE pushes his body as hard as he can. He runs past the dark, empty showers and into the change room. Equipment from all kinds of sports is strewn about on the floor. With no light in the room, LUKE can't really see anything as he searches desperately for the door to the gym. He crashes into a few loose basketballs, and narrowly avoids tripping over a baseball bat. He fumbles his way through the room, eventually finding the right door. As he opens it, some light enters the room. LUKE hears the sound of deep, laboured breathing. A voracious alien monster jumps out behind him, snarling. LUKE immediately pulls out his shotgun and fires. The shot hits the creatures directly in the chest. The alien stumbles backwards slightly, its giant hairy arms struggling to cradle the wounds. LUKE runs out into the gym. INT. GYM LUKE rushes to slam the door behind him, but his shotgun gets caught between the door and the frame. Through the gap LUKE can see the alien creature barreling towards the door. LUKE drags the gun up along the door frame, until it is aligned with the monster's head. As the alien growls, LUKE sneers. LUKE Smile you son of a bitch! LUKE squeezes the trigger, and a powerful shotgun blast strikes the alien in the neck, sending its head flying backwards onto the floor. The force also kicks LUKE back a few feet. He laughs loudly as he hears the creature collapse onto the floor. With the alien dead, LUKE immediately slams the door shut. He turns his head, looking for something to barricade the door. His eyes immediately focus on a piano by the stage. LUKE immediately runs over to it and starts pushing it over to the change room door. Like everything else high schools own, the piano has wheels, making it very easy to push. They squeak loudly as LUKE pushes the piano across the gym floor. Up above the stage, TODD tries to open the door leading to the second-floor hallway. He gently turns the handle, but when he tries to pull the door open, it gets caught. This cramped area is cluttered with props, wires, and sports equipment. The door seems stuck on a large bag of soccer balls. TODD pulls on the door hard, trying to push the soccer balls out of the way. LUKE starts running with the piano as fast as he can, then slams it against the wall. It makes a loud crash as it collapses in front of the change room door. The sudden noise causes TODD to jump, but it's enough to push all of the soccer balls out of the way. TODD takes a single second for an elated smile, then dashes through the door. In fact, he moves so quickly that his foot snags one of the bags of soccer balls, and he trips. Four soccer balls roll over the ladder and land on the stage. They make loud thuds as they bounce on the wooden surface. LUKE immediately turns his attention to the stage. His nostrils flare as he runs over, seeing the bouncing soccer balls. He pulls a handgun out of the duffel bag, ready to give chase. CUT TO: INT. TECH WING HALLWAY ADAM sprints down through the darkened tech wing hallway, his hands tightly gripped around his shotgun. MIKE follows behind him, trying to catch up. MIKE screams for ADAM's attention, but ADAM ignores him. A number of slimy alien beasts chase the boys. The creatures move so slow that the boys don't seem to be in immediate danger, but it is inevitable that this hallway will quickly fill with the horrible creatures. ADAM runs for the door to the wood shop, and desperately tries to open it. MIKE runs up beside him. MIKE What are you doing? ADAM (quickly, barely coherent) We gotta go, gotta go. ADAM all but ignores MIKE as he swings the door open and runs into the wood shop. MIKE follows behind him. INT. WOOD SHOP ADAM immediately slams the door shut as soon as MIKE is through. The room is very dark, and the boys have to let there eyes adjust to the light before they can make anything out. ADAM runs over to a large wooden desk and starts pushing it in front of the door. MIKE looks through the small wire-glass window in the door out into the hall. There only seems to be two creatures lumbering into the hallway. However, MIKE can clearly hear and feel the heavy footsteps of the aliens, and it sounds as though an army's approaching. MIKE turns to ADAM, who is in complete panic, trying to push a heavy desk over to the door. MIKE Adam, what the hell? Relax. ADAM Help me move this fucking desk! MIKE Calm down, man. There's only two of them out there. ADAM mutters under his breath as he strains to move the desk. He's only a few feet from the door now. MIKE hasn't helped one bit. He instead pulls out a handgun. The two boys seem so concerned for their own plans that they fail to notice a big problem developing in the other corner of the room. There is another door leading into the wood shop, and it is wide open. ADAM finally shoves the desk into place in front of the door, with his back to MIKE. MIKE Adam, let's go. We need to find Luke. Things are fucked up, we need to get out of here. ADAM rolls his eyes. He ignores MIKE completely, then starts rooting through the cupboards looking for tools. One alien's distant growl can be heard. MIKE tenses his hand around his gun. MIKE Let's take 'em out now, while there's only a couple of 'em. We can't wait 'til there's too many of them. ADAM continues to rummage through drawers and closets, tossing things left and right. Occasionally, ADAM stops to pull something onto the nearest desk - things like drill bits, hammers of all sizes, and a blowtorch. MIKE keeps pleading his case. MIKE I mean, these things seem really pissed off. We need to meet up with Luke, right? He gets no response from ADAM, who finds something very special at the back of a deep cabinet - a high-powered nail gun. ADAM smiles to himself. MIKE (louder) Adam? ADAM turns around with a sour face, ready to tell MIKE to shut the hell up. Before he can utter a word, both he and MIKE notice one of the aliens shuffling through the open door in the other corner. MIKE instantly starts shooting it. His second shot nails it in the head, and it topples backwards. ADAM darts behind another large, heavy desk, then starts trying to push it in front of the door to block it. He crams it into the doorway with a mighty heave, and for a moment it looks like it will suffice. Seconds later, three giant alien beasts burst through the door, knocking the desk aside. ADAM runs while MIKE blasts them away. ADAM picks the nail-gun up off the desk and grips it tightly. Obviously he's never used one of these things before, as he doesn't seem to be able to hold it comfortably. As he tries to adjust his aim he keeps moving backwards, slowly. Suddenly, two hulking aliens burst through the other barricaded door. ADAM jumps in fear, but MIKE just smiles. The aliens hold their claws out in front of them and snarl loudly. With self-confidence parallel to Steve McQueen, MIKE takes out three alien monsters with four consecutive shots. He remains calm and cool as these massive, hairy, slimy beings crumble left and right, green ooze pouring out of the wounds. ADAM clears his throat, then raises the nail-gun with two hands. He fires it, and strikes a hit. The shot hits one of the aliens in the hand, nailing it to the wall. It wails and howls. ADAM fires another shot square into another creature's forehead. It collapses backwards and dies. MIKE takes a couple more shots, then stops to wipe his brow. He looks down at his handgun, and starts to notice just how low on ammo he is. He takes a few steps backwards, keeping a relatively safe distance between himself and his target. He empties his clip, then jumps down behind a desk to replace it. One of the alien creatures starts inching closer and closer to ADAM. He goes to take another shot with the nail-gun, and it jams. He looks down at it, and sees that it is not yet empty. The young man puts it between his legs and hits it, sending a nail shooting down through his toe. He screams in pain, watching as warm blood oozes out of his foot. The alien monsters keeps approaching, closer and closer and closer. MIKE fires off a couple of rounds, but pauses after hearing ADAM scream. He'd like to help, but he's too preoccupied with his own alien problems. They keep piling through the doors one after another, like twenty circus clowns getting out of a tiny car. There's too many for MIKE to handle. MIKE (yelling) Adam, you okay? He definitely is not. The alien monster is slowly converging on him as he tries to fight off the terrible pain. With time running out, ADAM starts using his hands to scavenge the nearest table for tools. His hand grips a long, sharp drill bit. The alien comes within feet of ADAM, and starts to widen it's jaw. The creature raises it's arm... and ADAM drives the drill bit deep into the creature's left eyeball. It lets out a hair-curling shriek and stumbles backwards, trying to cradle the wound with it's massive claws. It keels over, blood oozing from the wound. MIKE looks over at ADAM. ADAM This way. ADAM picks up the nail-gun and starts to limp away to the far corner of the room. MIKE is doing his best to deal with the onslaught of alien creatures, but more and more seem to come through the door with each bullet he fires. He glimpses back to see ADAM dragging his bloody foot across the ground. MIKE starts heading in the same direction. Suddenly, the air is punctuated with the sound of an alien shriek. The creature that had it's alien hand nailed to the wall suddenly rips it off. Most of the monster's hand remains stuck to the wall, except for the sharpest parts of the claws. The creature holds its ravaged arm out in front of it, and starts lumbering towards ADAM. MIKE lines up behind his fellow teen and raises his handgun. The alien growls abruptly, then uses it's huge arms to flip backwards and kick MIKE sharply in the stomach. He is knocked backwards, crashing into ADAM, sending both of them hurtling against a tall tool closet. The closet door shatters, and a number of woodworking tools tumble down onto the bruised bodies of the two boys. That was a very serious blow. Among the tools that fell out of the closet is an axe. MIKE notices it immediately, and picks it up off the ground. The alien snarls as it stomps closer to the boys. MIKE leans back, then buries the axe into the monster's head. It collapses, writhing in pain. Unfortunately, still more aliens enter the classroom through the open doors. ADAM again picks the nail-gun up off the ground. MIKE takes a second to wipe his brow, then picks ADAM up under the arm. He carries him towards the door in the far corner of the room, leading to the adjacent classroom - the auto shop. INT. AUTO SHOP The two of them burst into the room. It is an absolutely huge mechanic's workshop. The far wall consists solely of two large garage doors. Three cars in various stages of repair sit in the middle of the garage. A motorless snowmobile rests in the far corner. The room appears stocked with flammable products. Tools of all shapes and sizes are scattered haphazardly everywhere, there is nary a shelf that isn't stocked with a can of gasoline or motor oil, and every inch of the room is covered in a thin layer of oily grime. MIKE immediately sets ADAM down, then starts moving towards a large metal tool cabinet on wheels. MIKE pushes the cabinet over in front of the door. The heavy thing is difficult to maneuver, and MIKE inadvertently slams it against the wall a few time. What MIKE fails to notice is that in the process he manages to knock over a jerry can filled with gasoline, which spills out over the floor. MIKE topples the cabinet over directly in front of the door. ADAM starts to crawl over to the one of the cars, and he uses it to prop himself up. He looks as though he is suffering from intense pain. Blood gushes from the wound in his foot. ADAM tries to examine it, but can't get more than a glance without cringing. Suddenly, a massive alien starts pounding at the door. It crashes through the shoddy barricade. ADAM instantly raises his nail-gun, and buries three nails into the beast. It keels over. MIKE (yelling) We need to block that door! MIKE dashes over to a large metal bookshelf and starts rocking it, trying to push it over. ADAM already knows it's too late. He starts to crawl around to the other side of the car for some relative safety, grunting in pain every time he moves his body. The chain that opens one of the garage doors hangs from the ceiling just a few feet in front of ADAM. MIKE's face tightens as he tries to push the bookshelf in front of the door. He takes a second to stop for breath, and looks over at ADAM. They look at each other, then turn over to the garage doors - the sound coming from the other side is getting louder. It sounds like an army of aliens is amassing outside. Both boys try to hide their fear as MIKE turns his attention back to the bookshelf, pushing it into the door frame. After a beat, two more aliens punch the bookcase aside, knocking MIKE over. The gun drops out of his pants and slides across the room. ADAM raises his nail-gun, propping it on the hood of the car. He fires. One alien is struck right between the eyes, and instantly drops dead. ADAM's second shot hits the metal door frame, but ricochets back and strikes him in the shoulder. He cries in pain as he's knocked backwards. He drops his nail-gun. MIKE runs over to ADAM's side. ADAM wails in pain, clutching his shoulder with his hand. Two aliens start to crawl through the door and into the auto shop. ADAM (struggling to form words) We gotta go. Gotta go. Looking down at ADAM, MIKE bites his lip. He's never faced anything like this, and isn't really sure how to react. He looks up and sees his handgun lying on the ground a few yards away. He starts motioning towards it. ADAM rolls over onto his side. From this perspective he is looking under the car, and can see some of the aliens storming through the door. All he can make out are their massive feet stomping along, and their giant arms dragging along the floor. That's when ADAM notices the large pool of gasoline at the foot of the door. ADAM rolls back over onto his other side, screaming in pain. MIKE is picking the handgun up off the ground and aiming towards the door. ADAM (yelling) No! ADAM reaches up for the hanging metal chain, so he can pull himself to his feet. Before MIKE can react to ADAM's warning, he fires off three quick shots. The third is the one that strikes the gasoline, and a giant explosion occurs. The entire room is rocked by a huge fireball. The aliens in the door are instantly charred, and it is their piercing shrieks that hang longest in the air. The monsters are engulfed in flames. MIKE is knocked backwards, and his pants catch fire. He tries to put out the flames, but was badly dazed in the blast. ADAM is also knocked backwards, and his body is pulled along with the metal chain. As the chain is tightened, the garage door leading into the auto shop rises suddenly. Moonlight pours in through the open door. There is an instant of silence as both young men, barely coherent, see dozens of blood-thirsty aliens standing at the threshold, eagerly anticipating a meal. ADAM lies on the ground, burned and bloody, barely conscious. MIKE gets to his feet and starts stumbling backwards. He picks up the nail-gun and starts firing blindly. He's been badly wounded by the fight. He manages to hit a few of the aliens with the nails, but he also manages to bury at least half a dozen into the side of one of the cars. After a moment, MIKE looks at ADAM, who doesn't even stir. Like an ant colony invading a picnic, dozens of alien monsters swarm through the garage door, arms outstretched. The two boys are trapped. MIKE spins his head around, searching for some kind of exit. He notices the door in the corner, behind the tool room. ADAM tries to raise his head. Laying on the ground on his side, ADAM can just barely make out an army of creature slowly plundering towards him. It's like being surrounded by thirty grizzly bears. The beasts expose their sharp teeth as they growl loudly. MIKE runs as fast as he can to a door behind the tool room. On it is a an engraved plastic sign reading "BOILER ROOM". He immediately throws the door open and darts inside. ADAM tries to follow him, but he can barely crawl more than a few inches. INT. BOILER ROOM MIKE runs inside and slams the door behind him. He sets every lock on the door, then stands with his arms pressed against it. He's terrified. BACK TO: INT. AUTO SHOP The look of desperation in ADAM's eyes is heartbreaking as he tries to crawl away. He is so badly hurt that the horde of alien creature chasing him move even faster than he does. They swarm down and devour him. He screams in agony as his inside are pulled out. One of the aliens rips ADAM's arm out of his socket and begins nibbling on his fingers. Two other beasts chew on his feet, while a third scoops handfuls of guts into its mouth. The floor is soaked in blood. BACK TO: INT. BOILER ROOM MIKE listens as his friend is torn to bits. He starts to walk further and further away from the door, trembling. The boiler room is small, dark, and claustrophobic. An number of greasy, archaic machines and pipes line the walls. The screaming slowly fades down, and MIKE keeps walking backwards. He can hear the sounds of the aliens plodding around outside the door to the boiler room. They start scratching at the door, and MIKE really starts to panic. He starts to hyperventilate as the scratching gets louder and more furious. He takes three more steps backwards, until he is pushed up against the cold concrete wall. The aliens begin pounding on the door harder and harder and harder. MIKE bites his lip to keep from screaming. They suddenly burst through the door and start pouring into the boiler room. Even at their tedious pace, the monsters charge at MIKE. He screams just before he's devoured. CUT TO: INT. SECOND-FLOOR HALLWAY Neither TODD nor LUKE hear the final screams of the other two teens. TODD runs for his life down the second-floor hallway. He has a substantial lead on LUKE, but regardless the chase is on. TODD darts down the long corridors, past long rows of lockers. He pushes himself as hard as he can, like his life depended on it. LUKE fires off a few shots from his handgun, each narrowly missing his target. LUKE eventually throws off the duffel bag when it gets too difficult to run with it. TODD dashes around a corner just as the plaster in the wall behind him is shattered by one of LUKE's bullets. He really needs to turn up the speed now. However, there is hope in sight. As he turns the corner, he starts running towards the ladder in the middle of the hallway leading up to the skylight. TODD climbs onto it. LUKE chases behind him, racing with all his strength. TODD reaches the top of the ladder. Just as he climbs up through the skylight and onto the roof, LUKE comes barreling around the corner. TODD tries to pull the ladder up with him, preventing LUKE from following. Seeing this, LUKE fires two quick shots with his handgun, both of which miss TODD by mere inches. EXT. ROOF - NIGHT TODD immediately throws his body backwards, dropping the ladder back down into the second-floor hallway. As long as LUKE has that gun, TODD needs to keep moving. He jumps to his feet and starts running away from the skylight. BACK TO: INT. SECOND-FLOOR HALLWAY LUKE runs up to the ladder and readjusts it so that it is standing beneath the skylight. He starts to climb up it. BACK TO: EXT. ROOF - NIGHT TODD is running at full speed along the roof, tears streaming out of the corners of his eyes. However, he starts to slow down as the expression on his face turns to utter confusion. He stares off into the distance, down at the field below. TODD slows his pace down to a crawl as he approaches the edge of the roof. He looks over the edge, and suddenly a smile starts to form on his face. LUKE pulls himself through the skylight and up onto the roof. He wears a devilish, malicious grin. He sees TODD less than a hundred yards ahead of him, standing completely still. LUKE gets an evil smirk as he raises his handgun and fires. TODD is struck directly in the back. He gasps for a moment, then topples forward over the side of the building. LUKE chuckles to himself as he wanders over to the edge of the roof. He stops when he sees what TODD saw. CUT TO: EXT. WEST HILL SECONDARY SCHOOL - NIGHT Dozens and dozens of military soldiers approach the school on foot. There appears to be easily over a hundred, outnumbering the alien monsters by at least two-to-one. The soldiers are decked out in full camouflage regalia, draped in sashes of bullets and grenades. Each carries at least one high-powered machine gun. This giant mass of army men approaches the school from the highway, blasting any alien unfortunate enough to get in their path. There aren't any vehicles of any kind, only a seemingly endless mass of men with weapons. The air is filled with the constant sound of gunfire as the soldiers kill every single alien creature they see. The aliens are getting slaughtered. The ground surrounding the school is littered with the bodies of dead aliens. What few monsters are still circling the school actually seem terrified, and try to flee. This must be why they charged the school. TODD lies on the ground, barely conscious. Blood pours out of the bullet wound in his shoulder, and his legs look broken as well. Although his eyelids will barely open, TODD can see a number of soldiers chasing after the aliens, blowing them away with the same malicious glee that LUKE had earlier. TODD then notices the polished shine of two military-issued boot approaching him. They belong to the COMMANDING OFFICER, a middle-aged man sporting a buzz cut. Except for the massive green blood stains, his uniform is in almost pristine condition. The COMMANDING OFFICER looks down at TODD. COMMANDING OFFICER (yelling to another soldier) Medic! We've got a survivor! The COMMANDING OFFICER then notices the wound in TODD"S shoulder. The soldier kneels down to look at. COMMANDING OFFICER Holy shit, that's a bullet wound. (to TODD) Son, can you hear me? TODD flutters his eyes. His face tightens with every gunshot that echoes through the air. Another two soldiers circle around TODD's body. COMMANDING OFFICER (aside to another soldier, pointing to TODD's wound) Did we do this? (to TODD) Don't worry, son. We'll take care of you. CUT TO: EXT. ROOF - NIGHT LUKE looks down at TODD's body and watches as two military paramedics come and kneel down beside him. LUKE lets the gun slip from his hand, and it lands on the roof with a thud. He holds his hand to his forehead, and for the first time is able to objectively reflect on his actions. He looks as though he's about to cry. BACK TO: EXT. WEST HILL SECONDARY SCHOOL - NIGHT As the military paramedics bandage TODD's wound, the young man looks out at the soldiers killing aliens. It is now the men, not the aliens, who appear absolutely vicious. One of the soldiers shoots an alien's head off, then he and two other soldiers take turns stomping on the body. Another grunt shoots an alien in the foot so that it stumbles. As soon as the creature gets back to it's feet, the soldier again shoots the alien in the foot. The soldiers really seem to be having a terrific time massacring these creature. Each soldier wears a grin, and many laugh heartily. One of the paramedics jams a needle in TODD's arm. The young man doesn't flinch, he just stares off into the distance. As he watches the carnage unfold, a single tear rolls down his cheek. Like Ralph in Lord of the Flies, TODD weeps for the end of innocence, the darkness in man's heart, and the fall of a wise friend named BUFF. THE END
