A Boy and His Toy

The playing styles of some guitarists that developed in the 1980s, Perry claims "left me kind of cold. There's so much thought given to technique and not enough to the songs, you know what I mean? You can play 80-miles-per-hour but over what? So as far as my playing goes, I never had that kind of schooling, but the bigger picture is that I just don't worry about it. It's the songs that count and what you lend to that song. Some of those guys do it right, but for the most part it's just speed for
speed's sake. That's like the trend, and I can't really put it down for them because maybe if my band was just starting out we would be like buying into that stuff, because they're always pushing the boundaries. But for me, I stick to the basics because I know it gets me off, it makes me crazy." -
