The first concert I saw at the Newcastle Arena was
M-People. The venue itself SHOULD have been suited to concerts because
of its shape and construction, however the acoustics were terrible. I have
not been able to tell if this was caused by the sound system that M-People
used or something else, but the Bass reproduction was dire, the low end
sound rolled around the floor and never really got up to hit you. The midrange
clattered off the walls - the top end was OK but the result was an acoustic
mess.
Despite this, the band performed briliantly. I could not
tell if there was any recordings or sequencing mixed in, there were certainly
enough people and instruments on stage to have produced the sounds live
if they wanted to. If any sequencing was used then it was of exceptional
quality and totally transparent. I was dubious, at first, of going to see
a 'pop' band such as M-People live but they surpassed my expectations.
As ever the live atmosphere more than compensated for the fact that the
music was not what I would choose to listen to at home.
