Reviews of Fresco
[Aftonbladet]
M PEOPLE: Fresco (Bmg) Fyra britter med lättviktig soulpop i bagaget. (971024)

M People spent a considerable amount of time on Fresco, the group's fourth album, crafting a record that would break them out of the Europop straitjacket and establish them as an international dance-pop act. In other words, Fresco is less a club album than it is a radio record, filled with carefully-constructed songs with strong rhythms, sturdy hooks and pop-soul melodies. Too bad that much of the record simply isn't as memorable. Sure, there are several potential singles with naggingly catchy melodies and the entire production is appeallingly glossy and accessible, but the songs simply aren't there and neither is the charming, unashamed brashness of their early work. A few songs -- the garage techno of "Angel St.," the catchy house of "Fantasy Island" and the sweeping orchestrated pop of "Just for You" -- make the album worthwhile, but on the whole Fresco is a distressing step backward for a group that had yet to make a false move. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All-Music Guide

When you think M People you think 'nice' music and it is. They have an uncanny talent for producing 'happy the sun is shining and birds are singing' dance music. Third album 'Fresco' is 'Elegant Slumming' and 'Bizarre Fruit' revisited. Tracks like 'Fantasy Island' (a Chic's 'Everybody Dance' rip off) and 'Angel St.' are the swing dance tunes on the album- old school with familiar beats, strings and a catchy chorus but unmistakably uplifting. The rest of the album is a bunch of radio-friendly pop tunes. Might give it to mum for Christmas - she'll like this one.
7 outta 10

M People's forte are those big, swaggering soul tunes you thought only Motown could make. Though they don't match 'Search For The Hero' here - the slow paced, sensual first single 'Just For You' comes closest - they still put together a collection of songs that set them head and shoulders above most British dance acts. 'Red Flower Sunset' is funky head-nodding R&B, 'Angel Street' is cultured 90s disco, 'Avalon' a cinematic drum and bass reworking of Roxy Music's classic, and 'Never Mind Love' a luscious, hands-in-the-air singalong. Great stuff.

From the opening strings of Just for You to the last broken beat of Avalon, Fresco is another classic M People album. It is also another musical advance for a band that will never be content with the status quo. Fresco, which contains 11 originals and one very startling cover (Roxy Music's Avalon) is every bit as good as their previous albums.

| M PEOPLE Fresco (BMG/RCA/All formats) |
LIKE FALLING IN LOVE, M People are just something that happens to you. It could be while casually easing down the aisles at Halford's, or just while watching telly. Sometimes you're walking down the street when a car door opens and what do you know? There they are; Heather Small's mellifluous purr and M People's philly-soul melodies.
And you never notice them. Like the hum of electricity cables and the sound of voles burrowing underground, theirs is a sound that we've subconsciously filtered out. It's music that doesn't interfere with conscious thought: it just sits neatly in the corner, smiling benignly if you happen to catch its eye, but never threatening to engage you in conversation.
So that's 'Fresco': frightfully friendly, sexlessly sexy, and modestly melodic. Sometimes it's quite lovely; single 'Just For You' is luscious wallpaper with Small's elegantly unfussy voice sinking into a sumptuous bed of synthesised strings and house-lite beats. Dip into the lyrics, you'll find they're always encouraging like the sultry stroll down 'Angel Street' where M People tell you, in the nicest possible way, to "stand on your own two feet", because y'know, you're a beautiful person, and really, you put yourself down too often. They don't shy away from the issues either, like their earnest sigh in the face of homelessness ('Last Night 10,000'), but they don't get preachy 'cos it's not your fault, after all you're such a nice guy, and they know you'd do something about it if you could.
And it's because of their saturnine demeanour that you secretly wish that something really awful would happen to M People just to see how they'd react. Or even if they'd react. The android humanity of 'Fresco' struggles to understand genuine emotion: as Small querulously intones on 'Lonely', "How can you be so lonely with me in yourself?", as if because of their eternal optimism you don't have the right to wallow in self-pity.
So like the Stepford wives, 'Fresco' is demure, dutiful and obliging but deeply maladjusted and sinister. Beautiful to behold, but something you could never really fall in love with. 5/10

Sensuell og
forførende!
M

[She Magazine]
From How Can I Love You More? to Search For The Hero, M People have carved themselves a niche in the British pop/soul market. Fresco is their fourth album, a silky smooth, sophisticated collection with the husky, distinctively bitter-chocolate tones of Heather Small it also features an ultra-modern reworking of Roxy Music's Avalon.

M People är faktiskt skäligen ointressanta.

[Tearaway Magazine]
This is the third M People album and the voice of Heather Small is still going strong. Their sound has been updated and now includes more funky backings. There are not any standout tracks on this album, but a few are worth a mention. They are the catchy album opener Just For You, and Smile which is verging on sounding like Sneaker Pimps. Fantasy Island shows the typical M People pop style. It's worth a listen.

[The Daily Telegraph - 11th October 1997]
AFTER three albums, each more succesful than the last, M People launch number four with the aim of selling their soul to America. To that end they've spent some of their fast - accumulating fortune on the 'Very best' American session musicians - with predictable results.
Just for You, the current single, opens the album in promising style by dispensing with the ubiquituous M People dance-round-your-handbag beat in flavour of acoustic folk-tinged soul, as pioneered by Des'ree. This allows welcome space for Heather Small's distinctive voice, complemented by subtle flute refrains.

Listen Without Prejudice as all sorts of people seem to have it in for M-People.
The indie-rock crowd has never forgiven them for snatching the 1994 Mercury Music Prize from under the noses of Pulp, Blur and the Prodigy. Soul purists invariably balk at Heather Small's voice. And snobs from all areas routinely deride the group's music as being emblematic of the Sierra driving, Harvesters restaurant crowd, a burden M-People seem to have inherited from Level 42.
Ignore these ungenerous critiques. Suspend any lingering prejudices you may harbour about `disco' music. And let the simple, unaffected charm of Fresco enter your heart.
While her deep, stylised delivery does tend to sound as if she has a small animal caught in the back of her throat, Small nevertheless has a wonderfully distinctive voice and a sure touch for conveying the essence of lyrics in which there is no place for irony, ambiguity or world-weary cynicism.
While slower, more soulful tracks tend to predominate, the best tracks - Fantasy Island and Angel Street - combine a feel good disco beat with winning choruses harnessed to resolutely aspirational lyrics. Like the Spice Girls, M People provide highly enjoyable, top-quality pop which thrives on it's utter lack of artifice and pretension.
