SCREAM DAISY - IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

Scream Daisy’s transformation from relative obscurity into one of Malta’s top bands was undoubtedly an impressive feat, at least by local standards. Riding on the runaway success of debut single Room 7, a success the band consolidated with the follow-up single Wolf, Scream Daisy’s keenly-anticipated debut album is pretty much an application of the ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ philosophy. The production is slick and bonus points also go for the neat packaging concept.

With this approach in mind, in case of emergency brings together several influences, largely those same ones that helped shape the band’s eclectic live repertoire and popularity. There are home-grown common factors too however, and these are present throughout the record, relying largely on the band’s knack for melody and infectious choruses and propelled by Jotham’s overpowering yet fluid vocals.

The band’s direction is tight and focused, and while Brandan’s guitar work is very much at the helm of the music, it is the collective sound that really gives the band its popular drive.

With Lifesaver, the latest of three successful single already culled from the album (so far), Scream Daisy have definitely discovered what makes a tune popular, and used this knowledge to their advantage. Listening to the album, it is easy to pinpoint several other potential singles lingering all over the place, more so in the pop-driven Just Go, the acoustic strums of Miles Away or the U2 overtones of Everyday. Collectively these three songs portray the lighter side to the band’s prevailing powered pop profile. More significantly the album harbours yet another strong anthem in the vein of Room 7 and Wolf, Talking to Myself, which should easily maintain Scream Daisy’s residency on the airwaves. In the space of ten tracks, Scream Daisy have managed to capture the energy, passion and melodic drive that gave them their big break.

There is absolutely no doubt that there’s more where this came from and that Scream Daisy have the potential to battle with the big boys beyond these Maltese shores!
