THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK!

February 2004

LAURA
In an old-fashioned restaurant somewhere in Marsascala, with faint strains of Dusty Springfield in the background, I met Laura, a budding new name on the local music scene, for a brief interview. Bubbly and cheerful, she tells me that she started singing at a young age, inspired by her mother’s own career as a singer. Up to a few months ago, in fact, Laura’s only public musical forays were restricted to school concerts and soirees. But then she met Matthew, formerly of U-Bahn, and they realised they shared a passion for dance music. Initial jams soon pointed to a growing potential, and, once lyricist Clinton Paul came into the picture, things really started to gel.

Last September, Laura released her debut single, Lucky Star. Distributed mainly to the radio stations and club DJ’s, the song received heavy rotation on local stations, its commercial edge striking a popular chord particularly with teen audiences. Lucky Star was eventually voted fourth most played Maltese production by the popular dance radio station, Ten Sixty Six FM. This success was essential in motivating Laura and the team backing her, namely Matt and Clinton, in moving forward.

November 2003 saw the release of another promo single, Like An Angel. Layered with all the aspects that Laura herself looks for in music, namely energy and melody, and with clearly more attention afforded to the production process this time around, the song consolidated Laura’s presence on the airwaves and in the clubs. With two well-received tunes to motivate her, 2004 should definitely be an exciting year for Laura. While her main focus will be on studio work, she will also be developing her public profile through live PA’s and performances, which she loves!
