ROCK ON
THE MILD SIDE!

KRAVE - UNCIVILIZED
In 1994, Chris and Moira represented Malta at the Eurovision Song
Contest with More Than Love, a song that had a particular off-key kind
of appeal to it. Not quite what the Eurovision blueprint tends to go by,
that off-key factor was in fact essential to the music that Chris and
Moira would go on to write and release under their Krave alter ego. The
first obvious result was debut album Night to Day, which saw the duo
explore and expand the scope of their rock-edged pop. Now, with this
brand new (and a little overdue) follow-up, what Krave essentially prove
is that the direction they opted for on the debut album has remained a
relevant one by today’s standards, meaning that Uncivilized is at heart
a similarly inclined pop-rock collection.
The major difference here may be that this time, the songs are more a
collection of pop-edged rock than the other way round, with more space
allowed for the music’s natural vitality to come across. This is mostly
prominent on the current single All I Want, potential next singles
Beggin’ You and Moonman, and the dynamic Kashmir-referencing Go Ahead.
Mastered at London’s renowned Abbey Studios, Uncivilized is not without
fault, particularly on If Only, which may have fared better if the
vocals had been a tad less forceful. Overall however, it remains a good,
even if not brilliant, album; a sure sign that Krave are here to stay,
though I do believe that their best is yet to come!
